Boulder gave a modest nod.
“I built the original back on Cybertron. We used them to help locate weaknesses in load bearing structures in energon mines and during construction projects.”
He turned over the device in his servo thoughtfully. “For these particular models, Doc, Graham, and I reworked the original blueprint to be more compatible with the building materials and ores that are found here on Earth. The scanner’s frequency had to be adjusted, and the whole thing needed reformed weatherproofing…. Oh, sorry… I didn’t mean to ramble like that… Are you ready to start working?”
Although Flicker didn’t understand completely everything Boulder told him, he was still listening closely. When the bigger mech apologized for rambling, he waved his servo in a way that said don’t worry about it. He knew how easy it was to start to ramble when talking about things of interest.
“Yeah, let’s get to it,” Flicker replied with a nod. He turned his helmlight on and waited for Boulder to proceed first, then started to proceed closely next to him.
Boulder turned on his headlights and let them pan across the ceiling and floor of the tunnel. “Everything should be fine up here, but it never hurts to take a quick look whenever you get the chance.”
He turned back and examined the large timbers supporting the ceiling around the entrance.
“It keeps small annoyances from developing into big problems down the line.”
Nodding in satisfaction, the bulldozer gestured to Flicker and they started moving slowly down the tunnel. Finding a crack in one of the beams further along, Boulder pulled out some sealant and patched most of it up before turning to the little mech standing beside him.
“Would you like to seal the rest of it? All you have to do is squeeze this little trigger and slowly run the nozzle along the crack line.”

Boulder kept a close optic on Flicker’s knot tying. This wasn’t an ideal situation to be learning from one’s mistakes and the bulldozer was determined to keep the young mech safe.
“Let’s see… The knot looks good…” He gave the rope an experimental jerk, not enough to knock Flicker off his peds, but enough for the knot to come loose if it had been done incorrectly.
The knot held fast and Boulder smiled. “Perfect, now we make sure the other end is secure…” He double checked the tie offs at the opposite end of the ropes and nodded. “Okay, good. Now we just need our scanners.”
He took two small handheld devices from where they had been clipped at his hip and passed one to Flicker. “These are really simple to use, just point it at the spot that needs work and press the little trigger to scan it. The device will log the location and type of repair needed on it’s own. Once the little light at the top flashes green, it means the scan is complete and it’s ready for the next scan…. You have any questions before we go into the tunnels?”
Flicker took the offered device, curiously looking at it from all angles. When Boulder explained how they would work, Flicker’s expression grew impressed. It sounded like these scanners would help make their jobs much easier than noting everything down manually.
“No,” Flicker replied at first to Boulder’s inquiry if he had any questions, then continued, “except that did you make these? They’re really handy!”

Boulder gestured to the tangles of straps that sat nearby. “We’ll each have a harness on, so if we do fall, all the weight won’t be centered on our abdominal plating.”
He picked up one of the harnesses and showed Flicker the big ring where it would be tied off.
“Here, I’ll teach you how to tie off on mine since it’s bigger and you’ll be able to see what I’m doing.”
Flicker nodded as Boulder spoke, his optics bright and attentive. He watched closely as the bigger mech showed how to tie off the rope to the harness properly, then repeated after him with his own equipment.
After putting on his own harness, Flicker tried pulling the rope. It seemed secure enough, but he still asked Boulder to make sure: “Does this look right?”

“Sounds good. What do you need from the rest of us?”
“Support beams. I’ll need you to be ready to brace the walls and ceiling as we go.”
Heatwave nodded. “We can do that, just tell us where and when.”
Boulder smiled. “Great! I’ll get supplies in order and we’ll start as soon as possible.

Boulder stood at the entrance to the tunnels with a datapad in his servo and several lengths of rope at his peds. After a long discussion with Heatwave on the matter, the two had decided that the tunnel system needed to be remapped as soon as possible.
Several years worth of floods, fires, earthquakes, and volcanic activity, some man made and some natural, had rendered the current map virtually useless as tunnels caved in or flooded, sinkholes opened up, and new tunnels were uncovered.
Graham was off at Grimski Tech for two weeks to take a required hands-on class, so Boulder went through his checklist while he waited for Flicker to join him.
Flicker had promised earlier to help one citizen with some time-sensitive task, so when Heatwave had let him know Boulder could use his help, he’d had a bit of a trouble juggling with his schedule. However, he’d managed to sort it out somehow and now he was on his way, driving quickly (but obviously within the speed limit like Chase had taught him) to where Boulder was waiting.
Finally the white and blue scooter arrived at the right place. Flicker transformed and jogged the rest of the way, already apologizing before he’d even reached Boulder’s side. “I-I’m sorry it took me a while!” Flicker stopped next to the bulldozer and leaned against his knee joints for a brief moment. It was obvious he’d tried to hurry to keep Boulder from waiting. “So, um, how are we going to do this?”
“No problem, Chase mentioned you had a job to finish up.”
Boulder picked up the end of one of the ropes coiled at his peds. “Well, since the tunnels have become so… unpredictable, you might say. I suggest we tie off here at the firehouse entrance while we work our way in. That way we have both safety lines and a way to retrace our steps if we run into a new fork or obstruction along the way.”
Flicker nodded with a focused expression, listening Boulder’s instructions carefully.
“Sounds like a good plan.” The small bot took hold of another rope, but paused, seemingly unsure how to tie it. “So should I… tie it on myself secure enough that, um, if the floor happens to collapse, it’ll hold my weight?”
Flicker turned the rope on his servos unsurely. If he was completely honest, he didn’t really trust his knot tying skills. I should probably ask Blades or Cody for tips sometimes since they’re Scouts.
