note: Chihiro in my nondespair au comes out as Transfeminine, as the front of a “Totally Cis Girl” was slowly crumbling due to HPA lowkey being hell even in non despair, and she wanted to better connect with her classmates without hiding this part of herself. I originally headcanoned Her as a cisgender male but i have since had my eyes open to the “hey this writing is ass” argument. I am aware now of the flaws in Kodaka’s writing.

note: Mondo wants to test She/Her but is too repressed for that. Give it until after graduation when there’s nothing that can be done except accept the fact that He has always been a She.

additional note: I will refer to canon mondo as he/him, and non despair mondo as she/her. no I do not have an alternative name for my non despair version because I am afraid of Japanese naming conventions because I am scared to fuck it up.

Naegamigiri - Originally was “we both are dating Makoto separately” but Kyoko and Byakuya slowly gravitated towards each other and also began dating :3 oddly wholesome and does allow for both Kyoko and Byakuya to become more open and expressive

Ishimondo - Starts out as friends, feelings develop into more, both have the “I shouldn’t feel this way for another guy” conflict until eventually accepting themselves and confessing. When Chihiro comes out as Transfeminine, Mondo has a small breakdown in Chihiro’s dorm about gender. Mondo asks Chihiro to keep it a secret from everyone until she figures everything out, which takes until after graduation because repression. As Mondo grows into an adult, and her relationship with Taka gets deeper, she eventually finds she has to resolve it somehow, and eventually comes out as Transfeminine as well.

Now why do I headcanon Mondo as transfem? because free will, mostly. It feels fitting, considering how a major basis of his character is intense masculinity that has sort of been pushed on him.

Additionally, this isn’t supposed to take away from Taka’s queer awakening. Taka is very much still attracted to men, but above all else, he’s attracted to Mondo, in any form, regardless of gender.

was that an excuse to yap about my minor Ishimondo headcanon that only ever has a grip on me when it’s a non despair AU where they can grow and discover themselves more thoroughly? YES.

Anyway.

like can you imagine being taka? can you imagine that your whole life, your whole goddamn identity is centered around being Mr. Moral Good Guy, and the first person you ever fall in love with make friends with ends up fucking killing someone? can you imagine how devastating of a blow to the psyche that must've been?

i think that maybe taka would even blame himself. y'know, after mondo's execution, after it finally sets in that, yes, his lover soulmate star-crossed life partner best friend is (was lol #smokingthatmondopack), in fact, a bona fide murderer... taka might feel INSANELY guilty for ever having loved someone so "wicked"

i think he'd fight with himself in his brain; one side (his morals/worldview) screaming at him that mondo was terrible, mondo had to have been terrible because murder is terrible and he killed someone, not even in self defense, he took someone else's life, bashed their fucking brains in, a completely inexcusable crime that marks your very soul for Hell...

and the other side (his emotions, the ones he has never been able to name or control or understand because they're just too damn much to handle cough autism cough) simply repeating "but i loved him" in response. he can't put logic to it, he can't reason himself out of this one. all the rules and firm, sturdy rationality he's always depended on his whole life are useless to him now. he can't defend himself, and he can't explain why he became so attached to mondo in the way that he did. he can only assert to himself that his love for that murderer was (is) true blue as the summer sky, and he hates himself for it.

Like not only has he spent his entire life being Mr Morals, but he’s also spent his entire life ostracized and isolated despite his best intentions.

He has never been regarded highly by anyone at all. His closest friend is his father, they only have each other. The fact that the first time he felt some kind of camaraderie was in a horrifically fucked up hunger games parody where his closest friend ended up being a murderer on two accounts, and everyone else completely ignores your grief and following death. His first ever safe place outside of his father is the epitome of “wrong” and he’s faced with the brutal realization as he dies that no one cares.

His death is genuinely the most despairing of FHH (IMO) because of how we watch him slowly break. The influence of Mondo destroys him instead of letting him grow because of the hell that they’re trapped in. In any other world, Mondo would lovingly liberate him from the burdens he believes he must carry, and slowly guide him towards an imperfect, but happy life. But that’s not what happens. Because of this shitty, hellish game they must play, Mondo instead breaks him away from what he understands and swiftly guides him to a meticulously planned out death.
