Avatar Headcanon #6 Kissing in Na'vi Culture
Kissing is a human thing Jake taught Neytiri.
Think about it. Across every movie, comic, and game, we never once see two Na'vi kiss each other. The only other kiss we've seen is when Kiri kisses Spider! Something she likely learned from her parents! The only kiss in the entire franchise is the one Jake initiates with Neytiri in the first film.
My head canon: Neytiri had no idea what kissing even was. It's a concept Jake brought with him — a human thing.
And the films actually back this up. When they first form Tsaheylu and she rushes at him, she doesn't kiss him — she rubs her face against his. That's her language of closeness: nuzzling, scent, contact. It's the gesture her culture actually has. The kiss only happens because Jake initiates it!
It makes sense, too. The Na'vi bond through Tsaheylu — they literally link nervous systems. Why would a culture that connects that deeply ever develop something as small as pressing mouths together? A kiss would feel almost primitive next to what they already have.
Which makes the kiss one of the only human things Jake gives her that's purely tender. Not the Sky People's ways, not something taken — just something soft he hands to her. And she leans into it without even knowing what it is. 💙
