AYRTON SENNA during the press conference after winning the 1990 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX || [x]
Beloved Aphrodite, goddess who grants to us the greatest of joys, the harshest of sorrows, the sharpest of pleasures, the dearest of pains.
Aphrodite, freshest of Olymposā flowers, your lightest touch can turn the hearts of men towards love; with voice sweet as honey, sweet as wine, you speak words of persuasion, we hear and heed, rapt in wonder.
O Aphrodite, grace and beauty surround you, where you pass, the roses bloom, with sweetest scent and sharpest thorn: with reckless hands we grasp them.
Aphrodite, born of blood in the cold salt sea, born of the fallen sky, goddess whose kindness can be so brutal, who cruelty we cherish, blessed are your children, blessed those your favor, blessed those who have felt your might, blessed those who dwell in your domain.
Aphrodite, honored one, incomparable one, with each breath I praise you.

Canaanite carving of the god TammuzĀ (also known as Dumuzid), dating from approximately 3000 to 2650. This piece originates from theĀ CanaaniteĀ civilization during the Early Bronze Age.
There is something quite poetic about the fact that the earliest surviving source of the greek Adonis is a poem about how Aphrodite laments his death.
That culture of lamenting Adonis death goes back to Aphrodite's and Adonis' roots from mesopotamia, where people belived Dumuzid's yearly death caused the dry seasons of Sumeria.
Inanna weeping for Dumuzid, Aphrodite mourning Adonis.
It is so sad the scrutinity some people have against Adonis, he is very interesting if given the chance. His relationship with Aphrodite lasted civilizations and Dumuzid is the first dying and rising god we have records of
There is a variety of problems with the common view of Dumuzi (/Tammuz) as consistently āmistreatedā by Inanna (/Ishtar), and by an extension with making broader assumptions about character of either figure based on this claimĀ alone. Like many problems it stems from relying on too few sources.
The number of narratives which make Inanna responsible for his death isnāt actually all that high (and of these, the most notable pins the blame on Dumuzi not mourning her own death before), the most common cause are demons or bandits acting on own accord with Inanna absent or lamenting this state of affairs;
a particularly extreme case is the myth Inanna and Bilulu - here Inanna actually tracks down and rather gruesomely punishes the bandits;
a yet more extreme and very late view attributed Dumuziās death to him being āevilā in some way but this is irrelevant to the discussed context;
Some texts (ex. the Adapa myth) list Dumuzi alongside Ningishzida, a god who like him periodically died; however Inanna demonstrably has nothing to do with Ningishzidaās death (or life);
most importantly, love poetry consistently portrayed the relationship between Inanna and Dumuzi postively and as far as I am aware most Dumuzi literature belongs to this genre (you can see a sample here). As noted by assyriologist Dina Katz: āThe episode describing Inanna handing Dumuzi over to the galla [in Inannaās Descent] contradicts the many compositions devoted to their love and their marriage. (ā¦) It also contradicts Dumuziās epithet āthe beloved husband of Inanna"ā

the late notion of āevil Dumuziā grouped with villains such as Tiamat, Asag and Enmesharra is discussed briefly in Wilfred G. Lambertās Babylonian Creation Myths.
Some of the things Inanna calls her husband Dumuzid in the song of lettuce:
"Well-watered lettuce"
"My shaded garden of the desert"
"My grain lovely in beauty in its furrows"
"My first-class fruitful apple tree"
"The honey man"
"My lord"
"My altogether immediately sweet"
"My favourite of his mother"
