Probably one of the worst and hardest things I’ve ever had to do is convince my rats to shit in a single corner and stick with it. I’ve tried pee rocks before in the past with significantly poor luck. Maybe my old boys were just horrible slobs tho, could absolutely be that.

With my partner’s new rats, we started them as early as we could on a single substrate— the dust free pine shavings. We introduced the concept of a corner early by moving any stray poops to a designated corner. Once they got that idea, we introduced a litter tray. The most important part about toilet training is

1) giving them a big enough toilet to stand and turn around freely in

2) making the toilet a different substrate (important!)

We have paper pellets in ours, and the boys took to it stunningly. We put the tray in the same corner that we had been moving the poops to, and while we still have stray poops here and there, it’s fascinating to watch them climb out of bed and go back themselves up into their litter tray. 😂
