I think it's a shame that "Oedipus complex" refers to fucking your mom instead of the actual point of his story, fulfilling your destiny through your attempts to avoid it. It just so happens his destiny was to fuck his mom
Yeah, I donât know what Freud was thinking, but Oedipus very much did Not want to fuck his mom. He spent the entire play trying to avoid that, and then gauged out his eyes when he learned that he had anyway.
I think Freud was too caught up with the fantasy of fucking his mom to appreciate the themes of the story tbh

She finally got her dragon! I love the idea that somewhere along the journey (or maybe after it) Lae'zel found a little dragon. Not the majestic red one she dreamed of at the start, but a small one - yet still hers C:

hey so i want you to imagine you had a really big and inconvenient box in your bedroom that you always had to navigate around. and you were always knocking your knee into it and it wasn't the right height to use as a desk but it was too big to use as an end table and it kept you from putting your bed where you wanted it and it smelled kind of weird if you got too close. and this was your life, your whole life, knocking around this stupid fucking annoying fucking painful fucking box.
'what's in this box, anyway?' you would ask, and everyone else in the house would say, 'that thing's not supposed to be there, we don't have one,' and you'd say 'cool, but it's too big to get it out the door. it won't fit. i tried.' and everyone would just shrug and say 'well, that's your problem then.'
and you'd say, 'so what's in the box?' and everyone would just say 'you're not even supposed to have that box.'
anyway one day you open the box and it turns out what was in it the whole time was a version of you from a future where you're happy. and you sit there looking at your curled up fetal future of happiness, and everyone in the house stands there at the door and stares at you in horror.
and they all say, very worried now, 'you're not supposed to have that box. none of us have a box like that'
and you say to all of them, 'well that's your problem then,' and you let your future out.
and that's what happens when you're transgender.
if there are any late bloomers like me here:
sometimes what happens is that you have a pretty big room and the box is off to one corner of the room so you don't really notice it that much. but as you grow, you accumulate more stuff and you need to use more of your room and it starts to get in the way
and it takes you many many years to even start thinking about the box, because it's not like you stub your toe on it every day, right? but it does get to a point where you finally open it up, and yup, there's your little future curled up in there
and you don't really know what to think, because on one hand you starte at it, bewildered, like â this was here all along? this was an option??? I could have had this ages ago???
and on the other hand, would you rather have been forced into a smaller room where the box would have been more in the way, so you were forced to open it sooner?
and hopefully, if you're like me, the other people in your house are happily helping you open your box and saying things like âohhhh you had this thing in there all this time? damn, that explains so many things about youâ
If youre really, really unobservant, it's like a box on your desk that you didnt even know was there until one of your friends told you about their box.
And then you find it under your bed.
Sometimes the box has ânon-binaryâ written on it and you just assume that itâs been solved. âYa, thatâs probably true, donât need to worry about it though nothings really gotta change,â so you just let it sit there for years.
You donât really tell anyone because you have had friends with boxes whose families really hated the box, so you just donât tell your family about your box. Plus their boxes donât say ânon binaryâ so you assume your box is easier and smaller compared to theirâs.
So you let it sit there, you donât really tell people about the box cuz itâs been solved and people might be weird about it. Then, one day, randomly, you decide to just open it because youâre curious. And you donât see what you already have. You see top surgery and facial hair and dresses and suits. And then you realize that even though your box said ânon binaryâ you never really knew what that would mean to you, since everybodyâs box is different.
And then, if youâre like me, you realize that you were the one that wrote ânon-binaryâ on the box years ago because you technically knew what was in it the whole time, but the actions to make yourself happier scared you so you just pretended that the issue was delt with.
I think the only true conclusion one could ever draw about Sabrina carpenter from her music is that she has a kinda weird relationship with gender, where she can never truly decide if being a woman is a good & powerful thing or a bad & weakening thing, and she can never decide if thatâs her own fault or the fault of the male society in which she lives. this is not a criticism to be clear: that seems like a very normal way to engage with the world to me. itâs just funny to me that the seemingly most personally revealing aspect of her music is the way she seems to have no idea how to live as a straight woman. I canât relate to this at all because I am not a straight woman, but man does it seem accurate to the experiences of straight women that I know. Straight women sound off. If youâre out there. Straight women can you hear me? Is it that me espresso?
girl are you trapped in there?! girl get out!! girl scream if you need help!!! this is not very that me espresso girl!!
yeah i mean i've been saying this for months (sorry OP to jump on your post, it just aligns with something i've been trying to get across for a while now) but the overt, on-purpose heteropessimism of her music in combination with her vintage drag queen aesthetic and mid-century movie inspired concert visuals are all actually working together to create really interesting commentary on the current state of heterosexual womanhood. she's a lot smarter than most people give her credit for and this is all on purpose. i think a lot of people tend to assume that female artists arrive at a place of satirical or otherwise layered social commentary by accident and it's just something they're reading into it because they're smarter than the actual artist, not that it's ever something they put into the art while they were making it... but like, if you pay attention to everything she's doing and the way she presents herself when she's off-duty as opposed to in performance mode, she isn't Doing Hyperfemininity 24/7. her stage presentation is one of exaggerated hyperfeminine aesthetic performance because it's part of her commentary on how the experience of straight womanhood is basically doing 200% for men who give maybe 15% at best. she's got a whole song basically lamenting the fact that she is unfortunately a straight woman who craves dick in a world where men are fucking terrible with no real motivation to change!
Felt like this shouldnât stay in the tags
