The Salted Candle
- A working to call upon the spirit of salt to protect and banish all that is unwanted by the witch, it’s creator -
In popular witchcraft, the most we see of salt is as a purifying agent. It is utilized as a banisher of spirits and a warden of boundaries- taught to us as something that spirits abhor and cannot bear to pass.
But, as witches, we understand that all things have a spirit. Gold is called upon for success and prosperity, Silver for intuition and spiritual cognizance. Sulfur is summoned as the origin of life in alchemical witchery, and Iron as the aggressive defender. But salt, the simplest and most elementary toll in our arsenal, is left void- which is ironic, seeing as the Void, itself, is given spirit and purpose.
I cannot call this a charm, spell, ritual or otherwise. It is in itself a consecration of a tool that feels as old as the spirit of the Craft itself, to me, but has not been utilized, as I have yet to see. In this way, it is like a familiar- ancient, yet new, and thus refreshed. So, let’s begin.
You will need a white candle and sea salt. One could use a black candle and black salt, but I have found that this method was much more effective. Although, this could be from the other purposes I attribute to black salt and candles, so whatever rests well with you, go with that.
Personally, I prefer to charge my items before I use them. I don’t mean give them energy (I find this redundant, considering that they already have purpose and power in their utility), but charge them in the traditional sense- give them their tasks.
Pour out enough salt to cover the candle. Charge it, saying, “Spirit of Earth, bold and mute, heed this charge that I imbue. Hold fast and steady to the form I give, through flame and wax, life’s breath I give. Unto thee, this task I send, through candle’s flame, by your power, all ill end.”
Take the white candle and say, “Pillar of wax, wick and flame, I purpose you to protect and sain. Wherever from now your flam and light cast, so shall your protection last. As you shed you flesh as you melt, so shall this ward be cast and dealt. Hear me now, being of flame, I hereby charge you to banish all bane.”
Soften the candle by resting it briefly in warm water. Once soft, roll the candle in the salt so that the shaft is completely coated.
Once dry and solid, hold the candle and charge it, saying, “Spirit of Earth, I summon and stir thee. Come forth from thy rest and heed and adhere unto me. To cast away ill and vanquish all ill, this is the charge that I instill. This life and form I give unto thee, that you shall protect and adhere unto me. By salt and wax, of Earth you are cast. With flame and by breath, so shall you now last. From now until your wick’s life’s end, your task is to all ill rend.”
I have used this candle to banish unwanted energies, entities, spirits, and people. I have also used it to stand watch whilst I conjure spirits and commune with the dead. Sometimes I keep it by my bedside to watch over me in the night. There are many uses for this candle, it has become a lot like a familiar to me. I hope it serves you well, also.

Some things you can keep track of as a witch:
🌙 Your moon cycle (also known as your period). If you’re into the self-love side of witchcraft and want to focus more on your body and it’s wants and needs, you might want to think about keeping track of your period. You can then create spells, rituals and meditations that correspond with the moon phase and day(s) that you’re menstruating. <— this is obviously for those that are menstruating.
🌻 Your garden. If you have a garden (even if it’s just 3 little baby herb plants in your window, hey a garden is a garden) keep track of how well your plants or herbs are doing. Write down when you water them, how much sunlight (and moonlight, if that’s your thing) they got. You could even write down any emotional vibes you’re getting from your garden.
🔮 Your spells and rituals. Keeping track of your spells doesn’t just help you remember when you did what spell and what it was for, but it also allows you to go back and write in how well that spell worked out for you. And if it worked out well, because you kept track of it, you’ll know how to use it again in the future.
💰 Witchy buys. This is important if, like me, you tend to do a little bit of overspending on all the witchy supplies. But since I started to keep track of what I’m buying, using and not using, I’ve saved a ton of money on unnecessary things.
🙏 Gratitude. Keep a growing list of all the things you’re grateful for. It’s great to look back on in the future and it helps you keep perspective of your own life and spiritual journey.
🍵 Your tea. Okay, this is just something I do but I love to keep track of all the different teas I try. I think tea is considered a very witchy drink and therefore some of us are a little more serious about our tea drinking lol. But I just love taping in the little packaging, that my tea came in, into my journal and writing a little bit about it and how it made me feel and what it made me think about.
🌦️ The weather. This is important, to me, because I believe the weather can affect us and how we feel, think and behave. I like to have a record of what the weather was like when I casted a spell, did a ritual or did a reading so I can go back later and see if I feel that might have affected the outcomes.
