Breaking Point
Avery had thought that their torturous punishment of Georgia would be sufficient to satisfy Conrad of their pretended loyalty. That experience was more than harrowing enough, and they didnât feel they could stomach any more of the same. They felt relief that it was over, but even that small consolation was to be dashed, when Conrad summoned them once again for the same purpose, leading them to the punishment chamber where Rashmi had been brought in chains by the guards.
They werenât surprised to see her there. They knew now that he was singling out those slaves they were closest to. But that knowledge didnât make the sight any easier to face. This was the very opposite of what theyâd hoped for her. Being forced to hurt and betray her was the last thing they wanted, and they felt a sick feeling of dread at the bottom of their stomach. After what theyâd had to do to Georgia, it was horrible to think what he might have planned for this slave.
The trick was to keep her mind blank, but her body engaged, to show the pain without registering it. Rashmi leaned against the wall, head swimming. The last day or two had been a blur, but she hadnât broken yet. The pain was one-dimensional and while she was hurt, she wasnât suffering. There was a difference, and she took great pride in that she hadnât crossed it just yet. A contemptuous approach, yes, but hubris made a better friend that despair.
Rashmi opened one swollen eye at the sound of footsteps and registered Conrad and Avery. To be honest, they looked much worse than she felt, and it was a strange feeling. Then again, it was always easier to be hurt than it was to hurt someone you cared for.
âItâs OK,â she mouthed silently, trying to catch Averyâs eye. âEverythingâs going to be alright.â
