Ree struggles, initially, but — when they see that it’s Steven holding their wrist back, they drop their other fist, as the other kids retreat. Ree scoffs, eyes narrow, before kicking at a cloud of dirt with their sneaker.

“i admit that i did not catch the entire exchange, but it’s usually a fair bet to guess that the best resolution to a situation is one that does not involve fists.” he cocks his head to one side. his gaze flits to the fleeting figures of ree’s antagonists and then back to ree.

“No way,” they say, crossing their arms in return. Ree looks away, pointedly down, and wonders if they could sink into the ground right now.

“Some of us talk with our fists, anyway. It wasn’t like we were gonna break each others faces.”

… not on purpose, anyway.
