thinking about abandonment issues Benson and Randy. Randy has them bc he feels like he abandoned his family when he took off with Benson. he worries compulsively about getting separated from Benson, about Benson feeling abandoned, about Benson feeling insecure about the permanence of their situation. It manifests in Randy's constant need to apologize if he goes out of sight for too long, compulsively asking permission for everything he does. staying completely still and unmoving when Benson gets out of the car to get gas or pay for whatever junk he's buying from the convenience store that day, like a deanimated puppet whose master has suddenly dropped the strings. idk I think it's so compelling how in their own twisted ways they're always exactly what the other one needs, two sides of the same coin, etc.

I know we talk a lot about attic wife Randy (who is my beloved btw) buuut how about attic wife Benson? Maybe some time has passed and there has been a break in the case, maybe they weren't careful enough, maybe by some freak occurrence someone recognized Benson even from states away so now search efforts are reinvigorated. But Benson needs cigarettes. and maybe booze. and Randy is being a little shit and won't let him leave their little motel room because "it's too dangerous Benson, do you want them to take you away from me? Is your pack of Newports really worth never seeing me again?" So Randy goes instead. Out in the world with his long hair over his shoulders and a tshirt no one but Benson has ever seen him in while Benson stays behind, pacing like a dog on a chain. Pawing at the door fruitlessly for Randy to return. Gnawing on the last of his cigarettes. Jumping off the bed without even realizing when the door clicks open. Randy can't tell him, but he likes Benson this way. Forced to stay put, right where he left him. Guarded from the prying eyes of outsiders on the other side of their motel walls. Likes having him all to himself. Likes feeling useful. Likes the way Benson looks at him like he's the only one in the world when the door swings open.
