Why people wished they stayed platonic:

Seven of Nine and Chakotay

Star Trek has a bad habit of pairing up two characters in the final season of a show even if it makes no narrative sense. Chakotay is prime husband material but Seven never showed any interest in him or really in romance at all. They crammed in a cringey episode where she lives in the holodeck for a while and tries to date holo!Chakotay to set up their eventual pairing. (She also almost dies from turning off her Borg implants to try and be more human which is completely out of character and just so stupid.) In my headcanon Seven is aroace but if she must be allo she should end up with Janeway, and if Chakotay must come too they should be a power throuple.

What on earth was that?? They had 0 chemistry throughout the season and both had solid romantic subplots with other characters. Baffling… Absolutely baffling…

Kylo Ren & Rey

i'll be honest here i lowkey liked the tension in the first movie. but with the writing of next movies focusing on them as a couple it went so downhill.

Natasha Romanov and Bruce Banner

oh no our last two main characters that don't have any romance in their lives :( what can they connect on hmm? oh! Neither of us can have kids : ') sure that'll work

Why people wished they stayed platonic:

Spock and La’An Noonien-Singh

The characters were growing closer as friends from shared secrets and trauma, but them being romantic just came out of nowhere, especially since both had rather recently gone through breakups/heartbreak that one would think would make them want to take a break from romance for a good while.

Myka Bering and Pete Latimer

They had a very strong sibling-like relationship for the majority of the show, Myka’s actor wanted her character to be in a relationship with a different (female) character, the characters were literally so platonic they slept in the same bed naked when they knew they’d wake up without their memories to make their future selves investigate what had happened because they knew there was no way they’d ever sleep together and were, in fact, actively disgusted at the idea. It was only in the last season they became romantic and I’m fairly sure the entire cast rejects the entire season anyway.

For the first four seasons they were disgusted at the idea of being a sexual/romantic couple and I understand that the showrunner was trying to go for a "methinks she doth protest too much" vibe but that's not how the actors played it! They worked so well as having an annoying-siblinglike relationship and then the last half season spedrun a romance and it didn't work at all.

Plus Myka is clearly into girls (might be bi but isn't into Pete) and her relationship with Helena (canonically bi) at all times had SO much chemistry. Bering & Wells forever.

The final season suddenly shoved them together as a way of ending things and it was rushed and unnecessary. There was a bit of a will-they/won't-they early on but that had seemingly settled into them being great partners and friends. Also Bering & Wells forever!

1: There's an entire episode where the plot is that they leave proof something is wrong by making it look like they hooked up, which is completely out of character. 2: Myka had a nearly-canon girlfriend and the show was already canceled when they put her and Pete together for the finale.

They were such a fun duo, perfect platonic (work) partners who meant a lot to each other but it didn't have to get romantic. Many fans think Myka in particular had much more romantic chemistry with someone else, and to some people Pete and Myka getting together was a surprise and/or disappointment.

I just think that having a strong, meaningful friendship would have worked just as well for them.

A beautiful supportive platonic male female friendship that was built up over many seasons who were shoved into a relationship in the last few episodes to follow up on romantic tension that had been dropped after season 1

Why people wished they stayed platonic:

James Moriarty and Beatrice Holmes

To be honest they shouldn't even stay platonic, they should stay away from each other. Beatrice is Sherlocks kinda evil but not that evil anymore sister and James gets with her to use her? To do an evil weapon business with her behind Sherlocks back? Honestly I can't stand the fact that they made a show that had so much sexual tension between Sherlock and James just to fake out and have him bang Sherlocks sister. She isn't even written well, it seems like she's just a plot device that is supposed to alienate Sherlock and James from each other.

Mike Wheeler and El Hopper

They kissed after she asked if they would be like brother and sister <\3

Their friendship was really interesting & beneficial for them both, but neither were ready for a relationship and it kinda destroyed their bond, as well as their relationship with others. Their breakup allowed El to find herself outside her relationship to him.

They were put into a relationship at 12 after knowing each other for like a week and Jane literally thought of mike as her brother until he kissed her. She didn't know what a boyfriend was, having grown up in a lab her whole life. Besides that, they're incompatible. They have conpletely different interests and want different things. They've been compared to elliot and the alien from et multiple times. The relationship is also VERY comphet coded, especially from mike’s side but I could go on and on about that. In the end, idk I feel like a friendship between Jane and mike could've been much more interesting and wholesome.

Why people wished they stayed platonic:

Rachel and Ross

Dragged out too long + they make each other worse. Ross is immature and Rachel is petty

Katniss and Gale

It would have been a lot less trouble for both of them if things had been kept platonic, and Katniss could have maybe kept a friend by the end of the series since the messiness of and stress about the sort-of romance helped to push them away from each other during hard times.

Daikichi Kawachi & Rin Kaga

ALL THAT FUCKING BUILDUP AND SWEET SCENES OF A GUY RAISING HIS ADOPTED DAUGHTER ONLY FOR HER TO TURN OUT TO "NOT BE RELATED" AND HEY SHE'S IN HIGH SCHOOL NOW SO WHY DON'T THEY GET MARRIED AND HAVE A KID TOGETHER?! 🤮legit such a bad plot twist that the live action and anime adaptations cut off before the timeskip JUST to pretend it's all about the childraising aspects.

He raised her as his daughter. Everyone shipped him with the single mom next door, and everyone shipped her with the boy next door. Fans of the anime might never find out the true horror of the ending.

For four seasons they reference to each other as “like siblings,” seemed to have no romantic interest in each other even hinted at, there were episodes where the gimmick revolves around the fact that they weren’t into each other sexually or romantically, and then in season 5, at the eleventh hour, they suddenly realized they’d been in love with each other all along. It made no sense. Who was asking for that? Also Myka had been fairly strongly implied to be in love with someone else for several seasons, but that person was a woman. Cold feet, I think.

This was during the part of SvtFoE where Marco was being passed around to every possible girl except for his obvious endgame (Star) bc they wanted to draw it out as much as possible. This made poor Kelly caught in the cross-fire as a blink-and-you'll-miss it girlfriend for Marco that broke up with him off-screen??? And then they proceeded to just revert back to being friends again, so like…why did they date in the first place?

They hook up while in a mental hospital! Both of them aren't in the right mental state at ALL and it's literally Malia's FIRST KISS and then they immediately have sex??? And Malia just spent six years as a coyote in the wild and is mentally stuck at a younger age than Stiles?? It's so weird and gross and they both deserved better!!! Their dynamic is so fun when it's Stiles teaching/helping her, but so uncomfortable when they're romantic. Malia tramples his boundaries a lot and AGAIN. TJEY HOOKED UP IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL

Leo Valdez and Calypso

Leo got paired up with the first random woman he meets and it is SO SAD </3 dude they dont even really like each other as partners. There is NO REASON for these guys to be in a relationship and they would've had such a good friendship. Also Leo has always been aroace to me which factors into it LOL part of his story was about how lonely he felt in his friend group once all his other friends paired up… I think that would've been really interesting to explore ESPECIALLY if he formed a strong friendship with Calypso rather than a romantic relationship

Katniss and Gale

They never should’ve had romantic emotions between them we should’ve gotten them being able to be best friends even if one is female and one is male. Guys and girls can be friends without it being romantic and Katniss never thought of Gale that way until after she had been falling in love with Peeta. Yes I get that a love triangle is dramatic but with everything else going on they really didn’t need it tbh.

Katara and Aang

Aang felt more like a little brother figure to Katara (at least to me). Their dynamic and age difference made me lowkey uncomfy because Katara acted more like a mother figure towards Aang. Also Katara gets reduced to a mother/grandmother/healer after her marriage to Aang despite being a powerful bender and fighting for her right to learn waterbending fighting techniques.

They are kids. It never really felt like Katara's choice to be with Aang. She constantly acts like his mother because that's her main role in the show to be the mothering one. Have I mentioned they're kids? Maybe could have accepted them if they were canon in Korra but didn't like ATLA ending on it.

The vibes were all wrong

Generally I just have a serious dislike for straight couples where the woman basically has to babysit the man. I get the point is Aang went through character development and matured and everything but the fact the crush started the way it did made me incredibly uncomfortable every time it was brought up. Especially since I have experience dealing with guys like these. And that's not even mentioning season 3 where Aang treats Katara as if she basically owes him an explanation as to why they aren't together when she clearly has a lot more on her mind rn considering the fucking WAR. I just. Why. Why would you write it like this. Why do you think this is cute. I hate straight people.

They were such sweet friends, and I feel like they're both too young to be getting into a relationship at the end of the show.

Katara was not interested for so long and I just feel like Aang growing out of his crush and respecting her as a friend and ally would have made for a much stronger narrativ.

Why people wished they stayed platonic:

Jackie and Fez

It felt so forced. Jackie was serious with Kelso and Hyde, and then ends up with Fez and he's supposed to be her dream guy out of nowhere? Not buying it, they didn't sell that dynamic at all, if anything the narrative around her character feeling like she was 18 and suddenly needed to have her whole life figured out made it seem like she was just desperate to make happily ever after happen in any way possible and Fez was the last easy target. Not to mention, Fez as a character got a complete rewrite in the last season, he went from being the shy awkward guy who fumbles every girl he goes for to being this suave ladies man that sleeps with a different girl every night and Jackie has to try to get him to notice her. Super super forced. Hated that pairing sooooooooooo much. It's like if they tried to run with Joey and Rachel being together on friends like they were the perfect couple all along. At least in that show they wrote it into the plot that the characters came to their senses.
