I feel like we should have had a moment where Mario completely broke.
Like when Bowser said the phrase "we'll see how strong he really is after I kill his brother!"
He doesn't really kill him, but he wants Mario to believe that he did.
So he takes Luigi's hat, burns it, and presents it to Mario during their battle.
Example)
"you think you're so tough?! YOU THINK YOU'RE STRONG ENOUGH TO PROTECT THEM?!" Bowser roars as he continues to beat the small human.
With one last punch, he sends Mario flying until he crashes into a nearby car.
"you sure as hell weren't strong enough to protect him."
Mario stared in pure terror as Bowser presented a burnt up hat that belonged to his brother, Luigi.
Bowser grinned as he tossed the burnt hat towards him.
The small plumber took hold of the hat, only to suddenly realize what has happened.
"you claim to be strong and you claim to be able to protect them. But you couldn't even protect him, your own brother."
Memories flashed in Mario's mind of when him and Luigi were always together.
He remembered the last words he said to him.
How everything was going to be okay, as long as they were together.
But he let his brother slip from his grasp.
And now he was gone.
-----------------
Like I want to see Bowser use the fact that Mario would do anything for his brother against him.
So acting like he took Luigi away gave him an advantage, because Mario became vulnerable with the fact that he wasn't able to save his baby brother in time.
(LET ME SEE SOME ANGST!!!! I WANT TO CRY!!!)
Then comes the reunion.
When Mario can, physically, see and Luigi is alive.
At first he doesn't believe it, but once Luigi proves that he's real Mario is quick to capture his brother in a tight embrace.
Sobbing into him as he's relieved that he's okay.
(Mario has a lot on his plate, and after what his Dad told him. He genuinely believed that he was dragging Luigi down to failure. So when he heard that Bowser "killed" Luigi, he felt as if he failed the one thing he promised to do. Protect him. He felt like he failed, so seeing that Luigi's alive made him feel as if there's still a chance to keep that promise.)
