Petition to stop calling people who've gone to space by means of private space companies astronauts!
An astronaut conducts scientific experiements, engineering and maintenance and are funded by government grants to do so on behalf of the governments funding them in order to publicly publish the data and findings to benefit humanity.
Private space people who got there by the means of jeff bezos had money!
SpaceX (Musk) has brought astronauts to the ISS. NASA literally paid them too. NASA doesnโt have their own way of getting people there, itโs using private companies to send people and supplies etc up. (Was previously using Russian space vehicles until now IIRC)
Blue Origin (Bezos) is also bidding on a lunar contract

So... I recently changed my LinkedIn to better reflect the work I've been doing the last 3 years. Instead of having two concurrent positions (one with a completely wrong title) I looked around my calendar for about when I stopped doing research work to end that position. Then renamed the "VR technical lead" title to "product designer" on the recommendation of people I discussed my work with in the field.
And since I'm officially no longer the lead on that VR product anymore, I added a new title, "UX researcher". I will be performing UX research to investigate ways to continue improving our VR product as well as some more general UX evangelism because this company is very much a "let's hurry up and launch the backend, we'll fix the UI later" kind of place (which never happens and is starting to become a risk to the company). I have a real opportunity to make lasting change here, or at least grind out a few months of good portfolio-relevant experience.
Suddenly, I'm actually getting the kind of recruiters I want to see for jobs I'd consider taking. Got a Meta Reality Labs one the other day.
Even if product designer is a more accurate title for what I've been doing, though, I still need a few months to prepare a solid portfolio. So I'm not actively applying for jobs yet and just networking with the legit recruiters who contact me. But it's coming soon.
The other day I sped run the intro to UX course from Google's UX certificate to lay the land and see where I specifically need to improve (seriously, it took me 4 days, a few hours per day, to finish). Now I'm chipping away at a portfolio project for the cert while also retroactively trying to fit my VR work into a portfolio piece.
I'm actually genuinely excited. Especially because going through the intro course made it even clearer to me that I definitely want to do the research end of things. The research part is what's most interesting to me right now.
I wouldn't say I'm fully uninterested in stuff like wireframing in Figma, but it's not what I'm trying to focus on right now. I may not complete the entire cert because of that, or at least take my time on those after I finish what I need, we'll see.
Homelessness is such an addressable fix in bigger cities. So many empty building's not enough rent controlled housing.
I am not talking shelters, i am talking a dedicated space offering individual rooms with washrooms. Dedicated cantine for food and socialization. Education center and activity/hobby rooms. And let's not forget a safe judgement free injection site and rehab offers, sponsorships and group meetings.
These things are all doable and would cost a fraction on what big cities are soenging on bullshit things.
Single room occupancies (SROโs) are banned in most places now, so you canโt build cheap rooms that homeless people would be able to afford.
Additionally thereโs a lot of unseen homeless people. The people you see on the streets are generally severely mentally ill or have a substance abuse problem. Sane people who canโt afford housing will crash with friends, in a car, or at least keep off of the streets.
There is not a ton of empty housing in cities. The higher rents are the lower the vacancy rates. Additionally having vacancies are good because it means people can find an empty apartment instead of fighting over few available apartments. If vacancies were 0% youโd have to find someone willing to swap apartments at the same exact time.
Vacancies are at an all time low.
We need to build much more housing, and get rid of single family zoning.

Personally. Every since i started working for people who do research, i can tell you, donโt trust research papers who dont have at least one statistitian or professor of statistics as a coauthor.
Usually, most papers have bias in their reporting and p values mean nothing. Hear me out.
The most important thing about trusting a research paper is its age and how many times the study was replicated and the same conclusion was reached. This is not the case for the majority of research papers. Most of them cannot be replicated.
If were talking about summary studies where many research papers on one topic have been collected and compared to each other thats another thing. Thats actual reputable research at that point.
Iโve been religiously reading research papers and most of them are really bullshit and some even make me angry. Theres no standard methodology and all the important values and stats are hidden behind a paywall. And its actual topics i work with suring my day job.
Like this one research paper claiming that women operated on by male surgeons have worse outcomes than when operated on by male surgeons. Which is interesting. I then tried to see if they have accounted for the gender disparity in surgeons cause over all surgcal specialties women make up only 1/3rd of surgeons. (roughly). And i did not find a mention of that in the research paper. Nor did i find a mention of the evaluations of post surgical complications. Which is something i have worked with and its super hard to evaluate a patient on post surgical quakity metrics like that. And even most submissions to the qualifyong compliance and regulatory organizations arent even counted as complications, even when submitted as an actual post surgical complications. It did not mention anything about that either. Lots of other information was paywalled.
And i see this research paper being cited as sexism happening in the surgical field. I am mot saying that it isnt the case. The paper itself doesnt suggest that that male surgeons are the problem here. It suggest that people operated on by the opposite sex suffer more post surgical complications but it does show that the number is higher for male surgeons rather than female surgeons. But doesnt take into account that there are more male surgeons than female surgeons so the outcomes moght be skewed.
This is just bad communication and bad interpretation by pop media and blogs. I am not saying sexism doesnt exist in surgical fields. It does, its rampant. But it very likely does not extend to the patients and patient care.
I've been saying this for years. Big companies and rich people use global and public infrastructure a lot more than working class and therefore own higher % tax. Only thing allowing them to make that much money is infrastructure (even banking and communications) and laws governed and set by a government.
Vast majority of taxes go to fund social programs like social security, Medicaid, Medicare, snap, and the military, not things like roads, bridges etc. Taxes are largely just transfer payments to the poor. And the rich do pay most of the taxes. Top 10% pays roughly 60-80% of all taxes.

Re logging someone else's post is like immortalizing them. Keeping them from dying. How many times we've looked at deactivated accounts. Accounts nowhere to be found, preserved forever in someone else's reblog.
Once you have a Tumblr blog you never really die, no matter how hard you try to delete your posts. They will always be here, even if you're not.
Bought a window AC unit today for this blistering heat wave were in. Never done that before. The US really is a weird frikkin place.
Thing is I actually bought two. But only for like smaller sizes rooms. But am planning to use each for at least cooling down 3x times that much through the hallways. Is this even a good idea? With 6000 BTU's (which don't mean shit to me)

This post also implies crowdfunding on Tumblr doesn't work either, so forget about all the homeless teens posting their gofundmes on tumblr. Or that a bunch of assholes can get(scam) enough money out of people on this platform to fund a shitty convention around Tumblr and call it dashcon or smth. Would never happen.
And yeah all the tumbles who promote their Etsy can never get a userbase out of this shithole cause ofc no one here has a dollar to spare. And I know you're right because I don't know a single drawing artists that commissions their furry art on here for money. I don't think they exist. Artists making money while showing their art on their Tumblr blogs is a pipe dream.
A lot of insurance companies barely make any money from what you give them directly. They actually invest the money and thatโs how they make profit.
I.e. they pay out everything that you give them, in either expenses or claims. The money they make comes from investing the premiums while they hold onto them.
Since insurance companies look for lower risk investments, they tend to invest primarily in bonds. However, they do invest smaller amounts i
