Warm sunny days are all that I need I can sit in a tree and sail the seven seas I can pillage and plunder and run around barefoot no one can stop me at least until lunch
I breathed in deep, enjoying the clean crisp air. This is just what I needed. A whole day to myself and nature. A hiking day was long overdue. Iâm so glad I listened to Shea and took this personal day.
I woke up nice and early, packed up my bag, grabbed my boots and fled to the trails of the Monongahela Forest. Well, my neck of the woods at least. The Monongahela National Forest is massive.
I hiked up Barryâs Heartache Trail. It took a couple of hours, but the view at the top is worth it. The rolling hills and glimpses of the rivers are just breathtaking. I found a nice spot to set down and eat my packed lunch.
The forest is so peaceful and beautiful that I decided to sit and write for a bit. Unfortunately, for anyone who has tried to sit in nature and write, itâs never comfortable where you manage to sit. So I wrote for a little and then packed up again to head down the trail. Lupâs Leap branched off from Barryâs Heartache so I turned there, not quite ready to go home yet.
Lupâs Leap ended up being longer than I remembered and soon the sun was setting. I packed my flashlight, but the beam of light did little to take the chill out of the forest. The trees seemed to grow taller, more menacing. Every shadow darkened. Every rustle sounded like a predator stalking its prey.
I double checked my map in the beam of my flashlight. After a few more bends in the trail Iâd be back on Barryâs Heartache and then itâs a nearly straight shot to the parking area I left my Jeep Wrangler in. I stuffed the map back into my bag and kept on down the trail.
Back on Barryâs Heartache, I noticed that the birds had stopped singing. My heart skipped a beat. Ok, Ok, I told myself, this is not a horror movie. Youâre going to be fine, just follow the trail back to the car. I took three steps and then heard a rustle just to the left of me. I swung my flashlight around. Nothing. My heart is racing and Iâm trying to take nice calming deep breathes. It was probably just a squirrel. I start down the path again. Another rustle, this time with a low guttural growl. Thatâs definitely not a squirrel sound.
âHEY! BEAR!â I call out, hoping that if it is a bear it will decide to go away. I walk slowly, clapping my hands and calling out Hey Bear. I donât hear anymore rustling over my calls.
Iâm nearly to the parking area, I can see the gate at the end of the trail when a large dark shadow steps onto the trail ahead of me. Itâs beyond my flashlight reach, but I know shadows and that is not any shadow I recognize. I freeze up, faintly hoping that it will cross the path and move on.
The shadow stays still for a moment. Sniffs the air. Pauses. And turns towards me with a bone rattling growl. I only have the time to think Iâm done for before the thing is charging towards me. I turn and bolt back up the trail. Iâm not fast enough.

The scariest moment in my life was when I fainted. I had woken up with an intense pain in my neck. I could not move my head. I could not sit up. It took all of my willpower to get up from bed.
Each step was excruciating. I could not look down. I could not lean in any direction. I never realized how much movement my spine could feel. It took so much shuffling but I finally made it into the bathroom.
I tried to do my morning routine, but every movement was like a knife jamming into my nervous system.
And then Iâm on the floor. Everything is fuzzy and my arms and legs tingle. I try to push myself up and it feels like Iâm attempting a push up at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. The pain is still there, screaming in the background. A new feeling has taken the driver's seat in my brain. Itâs panic. I panic that I canât get up. I panic that I canât call for help. I panic that something is seriously wrong.
Iâm upright, and moving as quickly as I dare down the stairs to my mother, tears streaming down my face. I fear falling again.
Itâs only an hour later when I finally calm down with a heating pack on my neck. The tears have stopped and Iâm exhausted.
Iâm walking down a long dark tunnel. I canât see anything, itâs pitch black. My steps echo, the air is musty. Itâs cold, I fight against my shivers.
Up ahead thereâs a tiny dot of light. It never moves, must be an opening. No matter how long I walk, how far I go, the tiny dot of light never gets any bigger. I will never reach it.
Voices flood the tunnel with me. They echo, crashing into each other. Itâs a steady dull roar. Sometimes one voice is heard above the others, but not for long. All are yelling over each other. Each new voice adds weight to me. The voices are weighing on me, slowing me down. I walk, then I trudge, then shuffle. I can barely move under the weight of the voices.
I want this to end. I want to reach the tiny dot of light, but it never gets any closer. I can barely breathe now. Will I ever reach the light?
My landing was very bumpy, as I was told it would be. Entering a planet's atmosphere is never smooth sailing. However, I sailed for six and a half minutes and landed at Elysium Planitia. The first thing I did after landing safely was to set up my two decagonal solar arrays. America may run on Dunkin but I run on the Sun. I am not sure what Dunkin is exactly, but my engineers often joked about running on it. I can only assume that Dunkin is some form of energy I am not capable to run on. My landing kicked up a lot of dust, I couldnât see very well during my first few sols. I have a very important mission. My first objective is to photograph as much of Mars as I can. Honestly, who travels to a new place and doesnât take a picture? I have friends back on Earth who are looking forward to these pictures. I can only hope that my camera will capture the beauty of this planet as vividly as possible.
After I set up my equipment I will do my best to detect geophysical signals deep below the Martian surface. This includes marsquakes and heat. I am not sure what this data will help my friends back on Earth with. Perhaps it will help them understand their own planet as well.

On November 26, 2018, NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) will land on Mars. It will be a dual effort between NASAâs Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Mars Cube One (MarCO) to launch and land InSight on the red planet. We wish InSight luck in landing safely.
Thereâs a hedge at the edge of the garden. Mum says to never go over the hedge. The forest beyond it is full of magical and dangerous creatures. Iâve looked over the hedge, still safe in our garden, to see what I could. But all I saw was a dim forest, no magical creatures in sight.
No matter what I say to Mum she never agrees to let me go beyond the hedge. If it werenât for the magic wards I would have gone already. Thatâs the problem with magic parents. You canât really disobey their boundaries, especially if you donât know the right spell to get you past the wards.
âBlow out your candle and make a wish, Sorcha.â Mum said, placing a blueberry muffin with a single candle in front of me. I closed my eyes and thought really really hard, with all of my heart for my wish. I opened my eyes and blew out my candle. âHappy Birthday Sorcha.â Mum said, gently pulling the candle from my muffin.
âSo what did you wish for?â Mum asked from the stove, tossing around the hashbrowns to get them evenly cooked.
âTo go beyond the hedge.â I said, knowing full well that I was starting a fight on my birthday. Mum gave a heavy sigh and put the pan of hashbrowns back on the stovetop.
âWhy?â she asked, sounding extremely tired, she looked older somehow in that one moment.
âI want to see the creatures that live in the forest.â I say, watching for her reaction. Waiting for her to get angry, explode, send me to my room. All she does is sigh.
âYouâre just like your father.â she said, her voice full of sorrow. âAlright. Ok. Heâd want you to explore your curiosity, just like he did.â She said. I was shocked. Mum never talked about Dad. He had studied magical creatures and wrote journals on them. He even helped out Mr. Scamander a few times. But his love for magical creatures was what killed him. He died on an expedition to study Hungarian Horntails. Mum wont tell me the details of the expedition, but Iâve done some research on Hungarian Horntails, theyâre depicted as angry nasty beasts. Father didnât believe that. He believed there was more to the Horntails.
âHereâs the plan.â Mum said, sitting down at the table with me. âI want you to study up on survival skills. Youâre going to join the muggle local scouts, and you will not use magic when you are with them. Iâm going to get you every magical survival book I can. And we are going to do some muggle camping trips until I know you know how to be safe in the forest. And then, next year I will adjust the wards to let you pass.â I couldnât believe it. Mum was going to let me over the hedge. I jumped around the table to hug her, thanking her a million times. âFinish your breakfast, weâre going to the library and the bookstore this morning to start your studies. And Sorcha, I mean it. You have to take this seriously, I donât want to lose you too.â
Who knew that such a large and fearsome barbarian such as Yasha, could be so gentle? Beau, for all of her hard edges and resting bitch face, couldnât help but take notice. Yasha, so large, so intimidating, so socially awkward. Sheâs uncomfortable in crowded rooms, never really knows where to stand or sit. She talks in the softest voice Beau had ever heard, outside of battle of course. Thereâs no gentle way to rage.
Beauâs watched Yasha pick and press flowers with great fondness. Her hands soft and gentle, treating the flowers as if they would fall to ash if you hold them too hard.
Beau is reminded, yet again of how gentle Yasha can be after an ambush. Theyâd all been walking along a dirt road, heading to whatever city comes next on Fjordâs map. Beau stopped paying attention to the plan a few hours ago, just glad to be moving on to a new place. Out of nowhere, or rather out of hiding spots on the hills they were passing between, a group of bandits sprang up, crossbows aimed at every single one of them.
Of course common bandits were no problem for the Mighty Nein and they were dealt with quickly enough. Unfortunately a few of the bandits had gotten off some lucky shots, and now Beau looked and felt a bit like a porcupine. Jester was treating Caleb, who was still not the best fighter and had taken a few hits.
âI could help?â Yasha asked, voice soft now that her rage had subsided.
âYeah. Thatâd be great.â Beau gritted out, trying to reach the closest bolt and causing more pain in doing so.
âYou should hold still.â
âYeah, ok.â
Yasha pulled out each bolt as quickly as she could, applying pressure as each bolt left a weeping wound. Beau could feel a warm glow coming from Yasha. The healing glow, Beau isnât that far gone for the barbarian. Ok thatâs a blatant lie. With the pain fading from Beauâs back and the crossbow bolt wounds closing up, there really was a warm glow coming from Yashaâs hands.
âYouâll be sore for a while, but your wounds are closed.â She said quietly as Beau tried to organize her thoughts and stop thinking about Yashaâs hands.
âThanks for the magic touch.â Beau said with a grin over her shoulder at Yasha. Yasha sputtered for a moment and turned a little pink in the face.
âBEAU!â Jester yelled as she tackled Beau to the ground, interrupting her view of a blushing Yasha, âARE YOU OK? I SAW YOU GET HIT WITH SOME BOLTS BUT CALEB NEEDED HELP AND-â As Jester rambled on, Beau saved Yashaâs blush and her warm hands in the back of her mind to think about later.
Iâd say I miss my homeland, but I donât know what that land is like. Iâm a Faerie Dragon, thatâs what the caretakers say when they show me off to the other beings. They also mention that all of us in the habitat were âbred in captivityâ which is their way of saying weâve never been in the homeland. Most days I stay with the others of my kind, none of us know exactly what the homeland is like. Dayghen thinks that the homeland is overflowing with nature and prey. He wants to go there so much, heâs even tried to escape our habitat a few times. Ayruth thinks that our homeland was destroyed, why else would we live here in a habitat being taken care of and put on display for others to see? Â I donât know who I believe. I just know that Kairon, the slightly grey caretaker, brings me to see other places outside of the habitat sometimes.
I like Kairon. They are warm and kind. They always have snacks and sometimes they let me nest up in their horns. Kairon takes me to what they like to call âbirthday parties.â I donât mind because I get to be out of the habitat and see more of the world. Even if Iâm put in front of a herd of younglings from various different herds. I donât even mind their touches for the most part. Well, ok. Except for that one that grabbed my wings. That one I didnât like, and I may have bit that one. Purely self defense ok? Besides, I spent the rest of that âpartyâ up in Kaironâs horns.
I was resting up in a tree, one of the few in our habitat, when Kairon and a few other caretakers came in. It wasnât feeding time, and they had the âtravel crateâ as they called it. Must be a party day. The other caretakers were putting extra skins on their hands, they use these for protection when dealing with us. I saw Kairon roll their eyes at the other caretakers. Kairon never uses the extra skins with us. Once all of the caretakers had their extra skins on Kairon looked over the habitat until they spotted me in the tree.
âThere you are.â they said with a smile. âCome on down, we have a party to go to.â I sat a moment, pretending to think it over. Of course I was going. Who would give up a chance to be out of the habitat. Especially when Ayruth and Dayghen were arguing again, soon theyâd be fighting and everyone else would be in an uproar too. I hopped off the branch and flew down to land on Kaironâs horns.
The trip to the party was not very long. We actually did not even leave the Caretakers Grounds. One of the tables by the giant watering hole, that the beings didnât even drink from, was surrounded in bright colors floating in the air. Kairon and the other caretakers put the âtravel cratesâ down.
âHi kids!â Kairon said over the roar of the younglings running around the table. They all stopped running and swarmed Kairon and I. âOk, so first things first. My name is Kairon and this little guy up here,â he pointed to me, âIs Gem. Now, which one of you is having a birthday today?â Kairon always starts this way. Apparently beings like to make their names known when they first meet each other. Beings are very proud of their names.
All of the younglings pointed to a very small very blue little being. She was giggling and hiding behind her hands. âHello, my name is Fiona Fancypants.â She said, the other younglings giggled in response.
âHello Fiona, and Happy Birthday.â Kairon said, bowing to the blue youngling. I nearly toppled off of their head, I flapped my wings and tried to rebalance as he changed his position. The other younglings giggled again. âI have some friends Iâd like you all to meet today.â Kairon said, moving towards the travel crates. âBut before I bring my friends out, I need to go over some rules. We all have rules right? Like, donât pull your friends hair.â the younglings nodded, âDonât shove your hands into the cake.â they all giggled at that one. âDonât pick your friends nose.â They all made funny faces at that one. Kairon uses the same rules every time, I find the younglings reactions to be entertaining. âWell, my friends have rules. Rule number one, respect my friends. They are like you and me. They get nervous when thereâs a lot of big new and loud people around. Rule number two, be gentle with my friends. Some of them you will be able to touch and maybe hold. But they do not like being grabbed or having their tails yanked. Just like you probably donât like being shoved or having your hair pulled. And my last rule is to listen. Some of my friends are very special and you can learn a lot about them, but only if you are listening. Think we can do that?â The younglings all roared in agreement. They went back to their table to sit down while Kairon brought out the first creature.
The youngling having the birthday loved every creature that Kairon showed her. She touched them all gently and even talked to them. She reminded me a lot of Kairon. I donât usually leave Kairon during these parties, but this blue youngling seemed special. I flew over to her head. She watched my every move. I circled her and did a few tricks, that always pleases the beings. When she was finally standing still enough, I landed on her head, balanced myself between her horns and settled down to watch Kairon tell the younglings about another of their creatures. Â I could feel the excitement coursing through the blue youngling. She was nearly glowing with joy.
At the end of the party Kairon made sure every creature was back in their crate. They were ready to leave. âFiona,â they said crouching in front of the blue youngling. âItâs time for my friends and I to go. We all wish you a very happy birthday and hope to see you again soon.â
âThank you.â The blue youngling said with the biggest smile I have ever seen on a youngling, even if I was seeing it upside down.
âGem, itâs time to leave our new friend now.â Kairon said, looking at me. I sat for a minute, pretending to think about it. As nice as the blue one was, I couldnât leave Kairon. I hopped from the blue younglings head to Kairons. We went back to the habitat, after dropping off the others at theirs first. All in all, it was a pretty nice party.
âSit.â I commanded Maisey, my dog. âStay.â She was on the rug in the kitchen, sitting like I had asked her to. I darted over to the sink and started rinsing dishes and putting them into the dishwasher as fast as I could. Maisey stood up and started to mozy on over. âNo! Go back.â Maisey slowly backed up to the rug. âSit.â I commanded again, she sat. âStay.â I said, drawing out the word until I was back at the sink.
Maisey made no motion to move. Satisfied, I turned back to the dishes. I rinsed and put one dish in the dishwasher when Maisey stood up again. âAh! Sit.â I said, hand still on the dish I just placed on the rack. Maisey sat down again. I returned to my rinsing and placing.
Maisey and I go through this charade every time I have to do the dishes because Maisey likes to like the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. No matter what is one them. Pasta Sauce, lemon dressing, whipped cream, even dish soap, which is probably not good for her.
We made it through the rest of the dishes and loading in the dish soap. âGood girl Maisey!â I exclaimed, reaching in to the dog treat jar on the counter and pulling out a small green bone. Maisey got up and danced around in excitement for her treat. She looked like she wanted to jump on me, âWait.â I said, in the same tone as my stay command. Maisey settled down and stood before me, eyes locked on the treat. âHere you go.â I tossed the treat to her, and as always she caught it in her mouth. Weâre getting better at the dishwashing training.

I smiled to myself as I tied my yarn in a not on my weaving project. We were making trees. Our plates were painted with a scene. Some kids did night skies. Some kids did day times. Most did a simple greengrass and blue sky combination. One ambitious kid did a mountain range in the background. I did something different. Iâve always been the oddball. My plate was painted as if you were standing on the moon. The bottom half was the rocky moon surface, and the top half was space, with earth off to the side.
The trees were set up as a weaving warp. The warp strings were brown twine for everyone but me. My warp strings were thick white thread. Instead of the two shades of green everyone else was using for their wefts, I was using lavender and dark purple. I donât know what color a tree on the moon would be, so I just went with purples. Whoâs gonna tell me Iâm wrong? Thereâs no trees on the moon.
Kindness is a simple thing. Itâs not some massive unattainable dream. Kindness is holding a door open. Itâs helping someone pick up what theyâve dropped. Itâs asking someone how their day was. Itâs responding to your friends message, even if youâre a little late. Itâs lending a hand. Itâs showing up to that thing you said youâd go to but didnât really want to go to. Itâs telling a small child that they look exactly like a princess in their mismatched juice stained costume. Yeah, kindness is a simple thing.
Itâs also self control. Sometimes itâs keeping your comments to yourself. Itâs not pushing your beliefs onto another person. Itâs letting that stranger on the bus read their book instead of talking to them. Itâs remembering that other people have lives too and sometimes they won't be able to be there for you right when you need it.
Kindness is a simple thing, but itâs hard sometimes. Right now, the world needs us to be as kind as possible. Thereâs war, civil injustice, and global climate change, to name a few. Everything is going wrong and the world is on fire. So letâs take the time to be kind to each other.
Deep in the woods there is a cave hidden behind a waterfall. There is a village that sits on the border of the woods. The people there are peaceful. They keep to themselves for the most part. Growing what vegetables they can and hunting in the woods for meat, fur, and bone. They find a use for every part of the animals they hunt. It is a good village.
Which is why I havenât burned it down. This is my cave. This is my woods. I protect everything in the woods. Even the humans who live on its edge.
Some other dragons donât understand why I keep the humans around. Some other dragons see humans as snacks, or vermin to exterminate. But I know better. Iâve watched these humans, studied them. They are different from the others. These humans do not waste what is good. They do not destroy what is around them. They do not take more than they can give. These humans are good, and I protect them even though most of them do not know it.
I was having a sun nap on a rock by my waterfall when three of the younger ones came bursting into the clearing. The smallest, Josias, was crying, tears and snot streaming down his face. He did not look like he was going to be stopping anytime soon.
âMyrm, we need to hide in your cave. Will you let us?â The oldest, Nicholaus asked. There was panic in his voice. Edith, the middle aged one, was trying to quiet Josias, but he wasnât cooperating. âPlease Myrm.â Nicholaus begged. I nodded and led them into my cave. Either the sound of the waterfall drowned out Josiasâ cries, or he had stopped.
The younger ones backed all of the way to the back of my cave. They were terrified of something. I glanced out of the cave, a group of men barged into the clearing. They were armored and shouting. Definitely the bad humans. Were the young ones hiding from these bad humans? I glanced back at the younger ones. Edith had moved to stand with me at the cave entrance.
âThose are not good men.â She said, but she didnât sound like Edith. Her voice was hard as stone and just as cold. âThey killed mama and papa. They killed the whole village. With no warning.â I looked down at Edith. She looked like herself, but not herself. She was tense, ready fight or flee at a moments notice. Her eyes looked dimmer than usual.
I launched myself out of the cave and through the waterfall with a massive roar. The armored humans were caught off guard. I blew fire at a few father from the pool. I swiped my at a few closer to the pool to make space for myself to land, and to knock them across the clearing. This is my woods. That was my village. These are my humans, and I will protect them.
âOkay guys,â Laguna said, sitting down at the table she and her friends had claimed at the dining hall. They were in the back where no one would bother them. âWe agreed to go somewhere for winter break. So, where would we all like to go?â
âSomewhere warm.â Kale shrugged, not even taking his eyes off of his phone.
âYouâre real helpful you know that?â Laguna said, rolling her eyes.
âHow about Sumatra?â Leaf suggested, flipping through a travel magazine. âItâs got volcanoes.â
âAre you actually interested in Sumatra?â Laguna asked. âOr are you just suggesting it because thatâs the first location mentioned in that magazine?â Leaf ducked his head behind his travel magazine. âDonât either of you have a place youâve always wanted to go?â
âNot in this plane of existence.â Kale said, tapping away at his phone. Leaf lowered his magazine and shook his head.
âYou two are impossible.â Laguna groaned.
âWhy donât you pick?â Kale suggested, slouching lower into his chair.
âIt is your first trip out of the country.â Leaf said, âItâs only fair that you get to go where you want to on your first trip.â
âYou guys really mean it?â Laguna asked. Both boys nodded, Kale never looking away from his phone and Leaf looking like an excited puppy. âOkay. Iâve always wanted to go to Iceland.â
âThen thatâs where weâll go.â Kale shrugged.
âIf we go,â Laguna said with a grin, âYou wonât be allowed to just sit and play on your phone the whole time.â She snatched the phone away from Kale. He sputtered and made a grab for it. Laguna laughed and jumped out of reach. Soon Kale was chasing Laguna around the dining hall trying to get his phone back. Leaf pulled out his laptop and started looking up a travel agency that would help them visit Iceland, since thatâs where Laguna wanted to go.
In three months, Kale Silverstone, Leaf Clearcreek, and Laguna Heavenstar would be traveling to Iceland and whatever adventures theyâll find there.
Percival knows many things. He knows that the fish in the bowl is not actually for eating, but for watching. The fish is also a good conversationalist, if you can keep him focused on the topic. He knows exactly were the sun will be during the day. It is important to keep track of the sun patches as their positions determine not only nap locations but when Macy returns home. He knows that the large white water bowl is not for drinking. He knows that the box full of sandy-gravel is for âbusinessâ as Macy calls it. He knows what to do when Macy is sad. He knows how to wake Macy up if she sleeps through her alarm clock again. He knows that if he meows just right she will give him some of her chicken. He knows when Macy needs a break and that she cannot work if he sits on the âlaptopâ. He knows she laughs when he pretends to chase things around the apartment. He knows she needs her sleep and will remind her when itâs bedtime.
Percival knows many things, but he does not know what Macy expects him to do with this kitten sheâs brought home.

Mill Street. The single two way street in town that everyone avoids. It doesnât have potholes. Or a blind turn. Itâs not even extremely narrow. No, the whole town avoids Mill Street because itâs . . . odd.
On a rainy night, a couple decided to take Mill Street and shorten the drive home from the movies. They turned onto the street, and they never turned off. They didnât get murdered or anything. The police never actually found their bodies. Or the car. They just disappeared.
In December, the street fills with cut pine trees. Thereâs no sign listing a price. And no one is ever seen tending to the trees. They just lean against their stands. Around December 20th, give or take a few days, Christmas lights appear, strung across the street. No one put them up. They arenât even plugged in to any of the known electrical outlets.
During the spring Mill Street is filled with the sound of chirping birds. There are no trees on Mill Street. No nests have been seen on Mill Street. No birds have been spotted on Mill Street even though the Bird Watching Group from the town library has cataloged nearly 30 of the bird calls heard from the street.
Mill Street is weird. Some say itâs cursed. A few even think itâs a time space rift or something else vaguely science fiction or fantasy. All I know, is that I found a stray cat walking out of Mill Street. His name is Beeker.
Frumpkin poofed into existence under the table of whatever tavern Caleb and his weirdos have found for the night. With no immediate order from Caleb Frumpkin opted for wandering around the tavern in search of a place to relax. After scouting so much in the last few days of travel he was understandably tired and in need of a good nap.
He wound his way around the legs of the table, finding familiar boots that smelled faintly of the ocean. Fjord, the larger green one that spits up sea water. He is usually calm and relaxed. Frumpkin hopped up onto the table. A large map greeted the familiar. It was written in a strange numeric language, not one that Frumpkin had ever encountered. He settled down at the edge of the map, loafing as the blue one, Jester, had called it.
Fjord was hunched over the map, studying the strange markings and making notes on a loose piece of parchment. He was acting similar to Caleb for the moment. Quiet and intensely focused. Frumpkin was about to close his eyes and start a nap when BAM! Jester appeared.
âFjord!â She said, slamming her hands down on the table. Frumpkin jumped up and glared at Jester. She didnât notice, all of her attention on Fjord. âYouâve studied the map for long enough. The musicians have started playing and you promised me a dance.â
âI- uh. We really need to figure out this map Jester.â Fjord stammered. Frumpkin rolled his eyes. Fjord was starting a losing battle. Jester will put on the puppy eyes or pouty face and Fjord will bend to her wishes and do anything she asks.
âBut Fjord, you promised.â Jester began, her voice wobbling pathetically, âDo you not want to dance with me?â
âI- I do want to dance with you Jester. But-â Fjord was cut off by Jesters squeal of glee as she dragged him off towards the open bit of floor to dance. Â Fjord barely had the time to grab the map and stuff it into his pouch.
Time to find a new napping spot. Frumpkin looked around the tavern. The grumpy human was at the bar, talking to the barkeep. Frumpkin hopped off the table and wove his way through the crowd beginning to form. The bar was not too high to jump on, but Frumpkin knows from past experiences that you canât always predict what state the bar will be in. Freshly cleaned? Covered in foul smelling liquids? Slightly sticky and altogether unpleasant. No, the best course of action is to jump up onto the stool, inspect the bar and then proceed. So he did.
The grumpy human, Beau, was still focused on the barkeep. She was talking low and had a small smile on. Frumpkin watched a little of the exchange. Beau would say something and lean in, then the barkeep would giggle and lean closer. The barkeep was leaning on her arms her face slowly inching towards Beau when she noticed the familiar.
âOh was a cute cat! Is it yours?â she asked Beau.
âNo he belongs to Caleb.â Beau said leaning closer, she kept talking but Frumpkin didnât bother to listen to the rest. He was inspecting the counter, it was definitely freshly cleaned. The barkeep had a rag in her hand, she had probably been cleaning that section of the bar when Beau started talking to her. Their faces were mere inches from each others now. Frumpkin rolled his eyes. Humans and their strange ways. Soon they will be smashing their faces together and making strange horrible noises. There will be no nap to be had here, but perhaps some fun. Frumpkin stepped up onto the bar and walked right between the two humans. He rubbed himself up against Beaus face, pressing his hip a little extra near her mouth. She sprung back, sputtering and spitting out fur.
âFrumpkin!â She growl and then spun around, âCaleb! Your damned cat just jumped in my mouth!â There was laughter throughout the tavern. Caleb was focused on his book by the hearth and didnât even take notice. The barkeep laughed and then leaned closer to Beau to whisper something. Frumpkin ignored the two as he scanned the tavern for a new place to try and nap in.
Nott, Caleb's goblin friend, was sitting in a dark corner of the tavern. Nott would be a good place to nap. They liked to go unnoticed so Frumpkin would not be bothered by anyone. He  made his way towards Nott, eyeing the seat next to her. That would be a lovely place for a lazy nap. He hopped up and curled around himself until he was comfortable. He watched Nott practice a few hand motions that he had seen Caleb do before.
Frumpkin was nearly asleep when three sharp popping noises sounded directly above him. He sprang up with cat-like agility, because he currently was a cat. He glanced around the tavern, looking for the source, his little heart racing in his chest. Nothing. There was no fight.
âOh! Iâm sorry Frumpkin.â Nott said, staring at her own fingers, âI didnât mean to do that.â Frumpkinâs tail twitched in annoyance. He jumped to the floor and quickly walked towards Caleb, whose nose was still buried deep inside a book. He will just nap with Caleb. Why didnât he just start there?
Caleb was sitting by the hearth. It was the perfect place, nice and warm and close to Caleb. Frumpking curled up under Caleb's chair, where no one could accidentally step on him, or spill something on him, or set off spells over his head. Frumpkin was just fading from consciousness and about to enjoy what would probably be a most wonderful dream, when Calebâs voice entered his mind.
âGo see was Mollymauk is up to.â Frumpkin opened his eyes and watched Mollymauk walking towards the door. He glared up at Caleb from under the chair. Stupid humans and their stupid crushes. Frumpkin just wanted a damned nap and now he has to go spy on Calebâs little crush. Fine. Frumpkin slipped through the crowd and made it out the tavern door without getting stepped on. Caleb owes him a nap for this.
