from my experience if you just make sure to not have a pokémon set as a walking partner or you make sure not to mess with your partner (such as putting it in a box, evolving it, anything that alters the walking slot) then riley won’t disappear.

i think it’s because the game is trying to account for your walking buddy while riley is already filling the walking spot. so nothing goes wrong until you move or somehow change the walking buddy, upon which the game overrides riley because you made an action - except, pokémon aren’t allowed in caves. so a pokémon that the game says physically can’t be there is written on top of the riley code, thus making riley invisible because the pokèmon is both replacing him but cannot exist in the space.
