La Grande-Bretagne et le Canal de Suez: 75 ans de colonialisme et la crise
Le canal de Suez, en Égypte, qui relie la Méditerranée à la mer Rouge, fut réquisitionné par les Britanniques en 1882 et ne fut restitué qu'à contrecœur 75 ans plus tard. Cette prise de contrôle au XIXe siècle provoqua un tollé international tout aussi préjudiciable à la réputation de la Grande-Bretagne que la plus célèbre crise de Suez du milieu du XXe siècle. Les gouvernements britanniques successifs considéraient le canal comme un lien stratégique vital entre la métropole et l’Empire britannique, en particulier l'Inde. Après avoir conservé le contrôle du canal pendant les deux guerres mondiales, les Britanniques furent finalement contraints de se retirer lorsque l'Égypte fut prise par le leader nationaliste Gamal Abdel Nasser et que l'intervention militaire anglo-franco-israélienne de 1956 fut rejetée tant par les États-Unis que par les Nations unies.
