She was about to turn him down and would have of her coworker hadnât agreed to take her place for a while. He mouthed a thank you and palmed a larger than normal tip into her hand in thank you as he followed Nani to wherever she wanted to be while they are and caught up. He found himself blushing slightly at her question, his brow arching in that particular sassy way he had about him. âI may not have come in any which way they could see me,â he admitted. âTurns out if you act like you belong somewhere, people tend to believe it.â
He sat the food down to let her go through it and watched her with a soft smile. âItâs good to get to see you,â he said softly. âI know you have to work but I miss you when You have to be away.â

Naniâs shoulders slumped, her hands running over her face as she sighed, âIâm sorry. If it helps, I donât like it any more than you doâŚâ After so long of this, the work, the stress, the worry, the expectations, she didnât know how to relax. She wanted to let someone else into her life, she really did. She had done it with David, she should be able to⌠but then she had lost them their house. Everything she had done to try and hold things together hadnât been enough and she couldnât let down her family like that againâŚ
âI promise. My next morning off I will call you first thing. You can take me out somewhere fancy⌠maybe some Olive GardenâŚâ She smiled over, apologetic and humbled by the spread of food in front of them. âIs slipping in through windows a new trick of yours or one you learned just for the occasion?â It was time, to try and just relax into the conversation, take the time to appreciate what he was doing for her, make herself a plate. âI wonât lie, I did think I had been talking to a nice boy⌠not some troublemaker.â She teased.
Kody turned to her and gently cupped her face in both his large hands. âHeyâŚ. You donât have to apologize to me ok?â He stroked the apples of her cheeks with his thumbs. âYou do this because itâs necessary to keep your family together and keep a roof over your head. I get it and I respect that.â He kissed her forehead and let her go, smiling down at her. Honestly, he had nineteen siblings, he got it.
âOooh it doesnât get much more fancy than Olive Garden,â he teased. âBut if thatâs where you wanna go, thatâs where weâll go.â He set down and let her sort through the food before speaking up again.
âI learned the trick when I was younger so I could get out and be on my own. If I took the front door I had to take at least five kids with me. Turns out it just helps me woo pretty girls I have crushes on.â

Kody hadnât seen Nani in several days and heâd be lying if he said he didnât miss her. He got it though. Keeping a family together with a roof over their heads wasnât easy and rent was steep at best. Still, he wanted to see her.
It took him a few days to come up with a relatively easy plan. He got some of her favorite foods, including dessert from Kayaâs bakery, and made his way to the casino where he knew sheâd be working today.
It was loud and busy with summer tourists looking for a thrill. He saw her instantly, a grin blossoming on his face as he laid eyes on her. âHey pretty girl. Think you have time for some dinner?â

Nani was confused, watching Kody approach with bags of food in his arms. She was mid-shift, serving drinks around to tables of gamblers. âKody, IâŚâ It was genuinely sweet. He had been trying to make plans, and she wanted to let him take her out, she really did, but there was never the time. It was work, or it was time with Lilo, or she needed to take care of the house. She had driven away many potential suitors with her schedule - none of them had taken it into their own hands like this before and her heart was breaking for them both as she started to tell them that she couldnât.
Go on ahead, Iâll cover. I could use the tips anyway.
She hadnât been around long enough to really make many friends, which made the offer all the more surprising, looking over at the older woman. âI canât ask you to do thatâŚâ
Itâs fine. Canât let a romantic gesture go to waste like that.
Nani inhaled, turning Kodyâs way. âAlright, dinner.â She finally grinned up at him, letting the moment roll over her. âI promise I will be back soon.â She assured the other waitress, pulling off her apron from around her waist. âHow did you convince them to let you bring all this in?â She whispered excitedly as she guided him towards a booth that hadnât been taken.

Max watched him for a moment and then laughed in disbelief. âWaitâŚ. Wait, whoâs lilo!? And why do you smile like that when you say her name!? Do you like her! Dougie!â He grinned, gently giving him a noogie. âThatâs great dude! Whatâs she like!?â He would be lying if he said he had any real interest in anyone right now and he was kinda jealous. It felt nice to like someone like thatâŚ. But that didnât mean he wasnât happy for Doug. From what he could tell the kid deserved a break.
âSeeâŚ.â He paused after a moment of thought. âI canât because then I might be a liarâŚ. But I can probably guarantee you Iâll make it out with minimal injuries if the worst happens?â He grinned sheepishly. Although he could skate and do bike tricks, he still had inherited his dadâs awkward streak. And it showed. âUh. AnywayâŚ. Shall we?â

Doug stopped in his tracks and shot an incredulous look at Max. His breath caught in his throat, startled by the young manâs sudden excitement. His cheeks flushed bright red as he pressed his lips together in a thin smile with furrowed eyebrows.  âWhy are you acting like that?â He asked, not familiar with the excitement that came from friend camaraderie. âOf course I like her. She wouldnât be my friend if I didnât, right?â
Doug watched Max for a moment while he explained the cost-to-risk of this venture. âAlright, but if you donât come back to the surface within a few seconds Iâm diving after you.â
âNo! Iâm picking up crush vibes. Do you LIKE like her?â He asked, trying to calm down so he wouldnât scare the poor kid. âLike a crush?â He paused. âYouâre blushing! You do have a crush!â He pulled dig to him in a hug. âAwww Doug, thatâs great.â He meant it. âIâm happy for you.â He paused again to peer over the edge of the cliff, his heart pounding in his throat before he nodded. âSounds fair. Letâs do this.â He pulled back and back and took a moment before running and leaping into the air. He was absolutely terrified, a Yelp leaving him as he cut through the air. He barely had time to hold his breath before he was slicing through the water

He shouldnât be rehearsingâŚ. He should be wandering around town looking for little trinkets to send back to his friends in HollywoodâŚ. But no. Instead he was dancing, his feet tapping against the ground rhythmically as the music played from his speaker. After a bit he had to take a break, letting himself sag against the wall as he reached to turn off the sound system
It was good but nothing ground breaking⌠typical. He needed to work hard to get anything done while he was away. He was about to reach and turn the music on when he jerked to a stop, laughing in shock. âWell, hello there.â He said with a wave. âAm I bothering you? I can go somewhere else.â

Douglas needed to blow off some steam. He needed a distraction, one that didnât involve other people, didnât involve aggressiveness. He didnât want to spar. He didnât want to work out. The young man needed to clear his head, and there was nothing that could do that better than dancing. Watching old VHS tapes heâd found in Charlesâ collection, heâd stumbled across his love for ballet very young, and for his good performance and obedience, his master had gifted him lessons. They were some of the best memories of his childhood, and now ballet had become his healthiest escape from the harsh realities of his duty to Charles and Alphonse.
Spinning was his favorite. He enjoyed the agileness of it, feeling light as a feather as he spun about on his toes, using the momentum of his arms and a gentle kick of his leg to keep the spin going. For a moment, the guilt that weighed heavy on his heart disappeared as his focus honed in on the orchestra playing in the overhead speakers and he found a graceful rhythm to dance to.Â
Douglas stopped to take a break after an hour, a little out of breath as heâd gotten so deep into it and didnât want to stop. He walked over to the music player, pausing his track as he set his back against the wall and slid down it to rest on the ground. All too soon, his troublesome thoughts - his confrontation with Robin - came flooding back to him, but then a voice interupted their channel, making Douglas flinch as he looked up to see another man reaching for the music looking down at him on the floor. âOh, no. Youâre not bothering me at all. Do you need this room to practice? I can let you have it.â
Kody hadnât expected anyone to be there, if he was being honest. So when he saw the young boy dancing he was surprised. He was good; agile and focused. It brought a smile to his face and he sat back to watch. It wasnât too long before he stopped. âNo. No, Iâm sorry I was just staring at you. Youâre really good at that. Where did you learn how to do that?â He leaned against the wall and smiled. âIt was really good.â He repeated. âIâve never been able to get that type of dance right,â he admitted ruefully. âIâm good at ballroom and tap though, ironically.â

âYou bet,â he grinned as he placed his order, leaning back in the chair to look at the younger boy with a relaxed smile. He shook his hand firmly, grinning at his exuberance, and nodded. âYeah, got in last night actually. Iâm from California but I decided to take a vacation. This seemed like a good place to go.â He rocked back on the chairâs back legs and shrugged. He didnât go around advertising his full name and what he did. Though Kody was good at what he did, he didnât brag about it. He never expected folks to know who he was. That was justâŚ. Prideful. Instead, he let it go there. âAre there any things in particular I need to do while Iâm here?â
âĄ
âWow, Cali to Prentiss.â That was a pretty big change. He assumed. He didnât know anything outside of Hollywood when it came to the state, but it surely wasnât the same anywhere as this eerie little beachside town. âIâd say you made a good choice, even if Iâm biased. Hm, Iâd usually say Cassâ cafĂŠ, but since youâre already hereâŚâ Fred tapped the table as he thought over the options. There were plenty of good eating establishments, but outside of those, he mainly spent his time in his own house. âWhat kind of things are you into? I know a neat little comic book store.â
âIt definitely was a change but they wanted me to relax so itâs perfect.â He laughed, knowing full well that he would never fully relax because that just wasnât the kind of person He wasâŚ.. not that the gang back home needed know that. He jotted down âCassâ Cafeâ in his notebook and thought for a minute. âYeah, actually. I used to be a big collector of Spider-Man comics.

He glanced over as the boy talked about the food at restaurant and instantly has the biggest desire to eat one of everything off the menu. âOh man.â He reached for his wallet at the mention of scones. âThey both sound amazing although you definitely donât have to pay for me. Your suggestions are more than helpful enough!â He slid his card across the counter and placed his order before turning back around. âIâm Kody, by the way.â
âĄ
âThey are,â he promised, âyouâll have to tell me which one is your favorite.â Heâd advertise for Cassâ cafĂŠ anytime he got the chance. Maybe he was biased, but he really thought anything she made was amazing, probably because it was made with love. âFred!â He held his hand out. âAre you new to town?â He didnât recognize the man, and it was about the time of year tourists started to flock to Prentiss.
âYou bet,â he grinned as he placed his order, leaning back in the chair to look at the younger boy with a relaxed smile. âI am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and Iâve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone whoâs ever lived: Iâve loved another with all my heart and soul; and to me, this has always been enough.â

Most of his time was spent in his office. He was there more than he was at his own house, even when he didnât have to be. Christopher had always had more luck making friends with the make believe than humans, it only made sense he wouldnât venture outside of The Home For Imaginary Friends unless necessary, even to go home. An empty, quiet home; so much of his life had revolved around keeping his best friend (and others like him) safe, that he hardly had anything to show for it.
âThe things boredom does to us,â he commented, not looking up from the open journal to put a name to the figure standing in the doorway. It wasnât rare for someone to drop by, whether it be a resident, a visitor or a curious inquirer. âI canât imagine why anyone would want to read a silly old manâs ramblings, but here I am jotting them down anyway.â
@ptstartâÂ
Kody has wonder what the little building was. He didnât quite understand it but there was something comforting about the idea of a home for imaginary creatures. He stepped inside and shook sand out of his hair. The manâs comment made him smile. âIf youâre old Iâm going to be in trouble in the not too distant future. I donât like the sound of that.â He chuckled. âHi. Iâm Kody.â
