Trying to get into art- just drew these dead roses. In a glass jar. Can anyone tell me how to make it better? No need to sugarcoat when I initially look at it even I can’t tell what it is. Thanks.
I admit coloured pencils are not my medium of choice, but I will expand a bit on what the other commenter said in the community. With a rose as the model, of course.
You should begin with observing the model and deciding on its values: which spots are lightest (light red, pink), which are darkest (brown red, purple, ultramarine), which are in-between (just red). Choose your three colours now.
Pick the light colour, and lightly, evenly colour everything. Emphasis on lightly. (picture 1)
With the same colour, slowly build up the form: pass again, lightly, a lot of times, to darken a little the spots that are in-between light and medium.
Then pass again, on the medium spots, with the medium colour.
Then again, on the dark spots, with the dark colour. (pictures 2 and 3).
Make sure to also colour the gradients between values, e.g. from light to middle: just pink, then mostly pink and a bit of red, then equal parts pink and red, then mostly red with a bit of pink, then red. (picture 4)
After all that, see if it is to your liking, and perhaps add some dark where it feels lacking, or tap a kneaded eraser on the spots that should be almost-white (such as reflections) to remove a little colour.
I hope this is clear enough. You’re doing great :-)
So grateful for this!!!
