“Fair enough. And our junk food?” He prompted with a playful smile tugging his lips. “Agree to it and I belong to you if I ever get my transplant as your humble student.”

“We can definitely have our junk food date,” Rae replied. “Which reminded me.” She dug through her purse, pulling out a snicker. “It may not be a drawing, but I hope it will suffice.”

“Las always has something going on.” He shrugged, looping an arm around her shoulder and leaning in for a kiss. “You look cute today.”

“Do I not look cute every other day?” Rae teased him, giving him a peck on the lips. “So I was thinking, maybe we could get dinner tonight, just me and you?”

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry. I don’t like people worrying about me.” He told her, sitting up as if to prove he was fine. “I’ve spent years in a hospital, you think I would know this stuff.” He joked in regards to the transplant information. “That’s the pact? I promise to hang out with you? I think I can agree to that. Two conditions. You are not allowed to worry about me and we have the junk food date I missed being here.”

Rae scrunched her face up a little. “I can’t promise I won’t worry. I’ll always worry about my friends, it’s kind of what I do.” She then sighed. “But I guess I will promise to not worry about your heart and trust that the doctors know what they’re doing.”

He put the bracelet on, shaking his head as she continued. “Sab told you everything didn’t she?” He half laughed and shrugged. “I don’t need one yet, they want to hold off until they can’t. I’m on a list but you’re stuck with me either way.” He joked. “So how do you know the transplant routine? I didn’t think leukemia came with transplants.” 

“Don’t worry, you’re cool, I don’t mind being stuck with you,” Reagan replied. “And she didn’t tell me everything. I mean, you told me that you had a heart condition. She just kind of told me about the transplant and that you were here. I kind of forced it out of her when you wouldn’t tell me. Nothing really can get in the way of me when I’m worried about someone.” She shrugged slightly. “Yeah, it’s kind of the last resort. When all the chemo and the radiation don’t work, and your body still hates you, they suggest a bone marrow transplant. I wasn’t on a list though, Royce was a match, so he donated. I mean the whole dying thing sucks, but then you get another chance, and you can’t let it go. I can’t lie, after a transplant, it still kind of sucks, because you still have anti-rejection meds, and doctors, and for me, I can still get sick again. It gets less though as time goes on. Are you up for a pact with me?” Rae asked. “When you get your transplant, I’ll help you learn the ins and outs of everything. Us sick kids gotta stick together, right?”

“I never knew that.” He said with a thoughtful expression. There was a lot he didn’t know about her. “guess we’ve just run in different hospital circles. Cardiac unit since day one.” He said like it was a badge of honor. He took the envelope and opened it smiling at the little bracelet. “I’m gonna wear this forever. How did your check up go?”

“Good, I really just had to go in to make sure everything is good, get my prescriptions refilled and what not,” Rae replied. “You’ll get all of that once you get your transplant, buddy. Which will happen. Just know, once you get a transplant, you’re not over with all the doctors, it’s just less. But hey, you have me, I can be your buddy, always and forever.”

Caleb was working on homework his dad had dropped off to him. He glanced up when he heard the door, taking a second to register that Rae was there and coming in his room. He wished he had worn real clothes and not decided to wear sweats and a lazy flannel button down. It was easier to access his heart if they needed to. He had had another small episode a couple days before. “Hey, what are you doing here?” He asked as a grin spread and he moved his school work. “Of course she did. I’m fine, I promise. What do you mean your used to the other way around?”

“I know, she told me that you would be,” Rae replied. “I trust her. She’s a nice girl.” Rae took a seat in the chair near his bed. “I practically grew up in a hospital. I had Leukemia before going to Ilvermorny, I’m in remission now though. Why do you think my parents are always so weirdly healthy now?” She nudged him slightly. “I remember how lonely it got being the sick girl all the time. So I had time after my appointment to stop by and bring you something. I make these with all the kids in the unit I used to stay in when I was recieveing treatment.” She smiled, handing over a small wrapped envelope. “Don’t say I never gave you anything.”

[times skip - first day of school]

Caleb: Plus we go back to school soon. I propose a junk food catch up first thing. That is if your boyfriend hasn't already called dibs.

“Because I have like, one friend, dude. I’m boring now, there’s not that much to keep up with.” He laughed, reaching over to ruffle her hair playfully. “Alright, alright, Delaney. How attached is she to this brother of hers?”

“Pretty attached. Not like attached at the hip, but they’re pretty close.”

“Damn. Well, I still have some leftover candy from my stocking if you want any of that.”

“I would love you forever if you gave me some of that.”

Caleb:I would but I too am junk foodless. Health food cops this Christmas. Buuuuuut *Draws a picture of a snickers*

Rae: Aw man. You have health food cops too? Man, that's a shame. Thanks for the picture though, it's cute.

“I mean. As long as he’s good to you, it shouldn’t be an issue right?”

“Yeah, he is,” Rae replied. “He’s pretty good at being a boyfriend.”
