@barbieknight Wonderful question! So the reason I believe "man repelling makeup" isn't a thing sort of comes with two answers. One of them is about men themselves while the other is in relation to wider patriarchy.

Men fetishize everything. They fetishize goth women, pastel women, fat women, thin women, short women, tall women, any woman. The desire to prevent fetishization is one I think a vast majority of women share, but that relies on the decisions men make. We cannot make them stop fetishizing us through actions we take because those actions are then further fetishized by other men.

Makeup itself is the ultimate intersection of capitalism and patriarchy. When you put money into supporting the beauty industry you're putting money into an industry built to oppress women. You can't call it man-repelling if it supports men as a whole, which partaking in our oppression does.

#what about if you don't really give a rat's ass what men think of it and you are using it only as self expression?#and buying the ~crazy~ colours/products (in NZ water-activated liner seems to be a ~craaazy~ product - I couldn't find it easily)#at least shows them that we don't so much care about fitting in or being approved of by men so much as by ourselves and other women #slash people platonically attracted to us (that's a thing right??)#tbh i have never rly bothered collecting/using “normal” makeup - like not to be a pick me (I don't care if men like it or not lol)#neutral palettes i find soo boring like a dime a dozen - but rainbow palettes or fun colour stories/formulas have my attention #but yeah i am into makeup in a Not So Normal way bc it's my autistic special interest #and in a country where there's an economy on space i don't have access to any kind of studio #art studio* just whatever space i have avaialble in my 2x2m room with my tiny desk i got from an opshop back in uni #so yeah without access to that my face (well eyes really) is my canvas and a way to express myself without words #if anything if we're gonna have this take we should boycott anything that is simply for “enhancement”#i appreciate the art that goes into “transforming” the face but still it really bores me #what if I don't necessarily want to look younger or change hooded eyes (that's just been my anatomy since a teen tbh #and it feels disingenuous to my visual identity to try to change it #so let's normalise makeup as an expressive art form #not a cage for women #and it should be marketed/enjoyed by all genders tbh #and sexualities. I'm kinda keen to see cishet men wearing makeup lol #thanks for coming to my Ted Ramble 💋
