Popping with pleasures “welcome to your new life with you being happy” radiates an enthusiasm for life. Throughout the collection Rachel Bell gravitates between her old life, how she grew up, and her current life experiences. Bridging those two divergent elements is the crux of the book. It makes sense to separate the two as the two appear to be dramatically different. Upon gazing at her present life, going to Karaoke Bars, caring about people, not caring about people, her life is one completely fulfilled.

“We Sing Songs On The North Side Of The City” ends up being quite playful. She wanders about meeting random individuals. The amount of contact is palpable. With these people she is able to completely be at one with herself. Push-ups are nonsense and thankfully she only hears about people doing them and stops herself from doing them, powering through wine as if the grapes were going out of style. Wine gets better with age though and like wine Rachel Bell gets happier with her life. Ridiculousness of things becomes readily apparent, tying stuff to car roofs, riding tandem bikes. Lots of time exists and it mostly existed to be killed. A few surreal things happen like her eating eyebrows which is pretty weird. Weirder still is how she slurps up eyebrows even though eyebrows are hair, so they’d need to be chewed quite thoroughly in fact. Failure to properly chew an eyebrow can result in a choking hazard of sorts. Nobody is ever ready for that. The ambience is beautiful, of dreaming of a lovely future with special someones, crashing weddings, and generally seeing the world as a wondrous blur of color.

Stranger elements pervade “If I Die In Indiana I Will Kill Myself”. Honestly it seems like a fairly reasonable statement. Few want to live in Indiana, hence the phrase “Eerie, Indiana” a creepy show from the early 90s that few remember. Across the country Rachel Bell travels, confronting people, being confused for a Mormon. Often the two are the same things. Nobody is ready to be confronted with everlasting salvation in the kingdom of Heaven, particularly by some teenager in a “Shit Burner” t-shirt. Out of somewhere comes the ordeal of the 7th grade. Middle school, high school it is all terrible but particularly for Rachel Bell. Things were terrible she found herself at the other side of an argument, arguing against a teacher who would never know much nor want to know much. Compassion serves as an ultimate form of power over horrible people, the kind that do terrible things. Forgiveness for the horrible ones is the strongest thing a person can do.
