sorry for the upcoming tangent but i love tangents and answering questions and explaining my position aaaaa!!! (can you tell that i was on the debate team for four years?)
so in this au, vincent and al are not actually the same people as vox and alastor. they are a "what if". they grew up in different conditions in the modern world, found each other at the right place and time, and were able to chose a far more moral path than our two sinners in hell. they are basically the inverted, "good" versions of them that managed to find happiness and satisfaction in their life.
i narrowed vox's and alastor's characters down to two traits: for vox, it is passion, and for alastor, it is justice. my reading of alastor consists of that twisted sense of justice where his kills had to do something with his systemic environment that worked against him - that's my interpretation of the scene with the white guy purposefully spilling a drink on him. and vox, in the meantime, is driven by his passion. in life that overwhelming sense of passion for power and innovation led him to cheat his way and use it in the wrong way, same as alastor.
in IDIMW, vincent and al are still driven by passion and justice, but unlike vox and alastor, they use it for good. while vincent is currently having a bit of an identity crisis with what he wants to do, and having been fired from the news anchor company, his sense of passion lies in informing the public of important issues and news, the freedom of the press, the "people's voice", and, to some extent, education. i don't want to spoil it, but that's the arc he's going to have to go through to fully find his place in this world. vox used his passion of voice for evil, while vincent will use it for good.
al already knows what he's meant to do. being a public interest lawyer is being an advocate for the marginalized groups and underrepresented people who face injustice by the current system and policies. and to me, that is one way for a person who prioritizes "justice" to use it for good and for the betterment of the world. (also, lawyers are known for their silver tongue, quick wit, persuasion, and loopholes - all traits that alastor has.)
also, i think being a radio host in the 1930s is way cooler than a radio host in the 2020s. i don't know, modern podcasters are kind of weird and grifty and i don't think it would fit who al is at his core. a lot of modern aus depict alastor as being a true crime podcaster, which fits and updates his canon persona, but it really doesn't fit my al. if al is a good version of alastor, with a moral sense of justice, i really don't think he would want to exploit the deaths of others for entertainment and money. i understand the whole awareness angle, it's just i've just seen more arguments against it than for. nothing against people who listen to these podcasts, i listen to them sometimes, it's just my perspective on the ethics of production itself.
and a public interest lawyer, for me, is a technically more active and productive role than a podcaster because of their tangibility, and for both al and vincent, who want to leave a positive mark on the world, that's all that matters.
