academic rivals to lovers

— how to start it:

to be honest, this is a hard thing to answer. you can only start writing by well, starting to write. what i can say though, is that rivals to lovers is really similar to enemies to lovers (a sub-genre of the trope, i’d say). the steps to write it are the same, as well as the importance of taking your time to flesh out your characters & their story.

here is my enemies to lovers post.

the small difference is that this is specifically set in a school of sorts (whether that is university or high school) and therefore there’s a lot more situation specific ways it could go.

(i believe and hope all my advice applies to all romances, including wlw!)

so.

the key component is the

WHY & HOW.

to make it simple, here are questions to ask yourself:

why are they rivals? what prompted it?

what would have to happen for it to end?

do either of them want it to end? why?

how do the people around them feel about it and how does that affect them, if at all?

what classes do they share and are they rivals in all of them or only a select few? why?

what forces them to be rivals? surely there are other people who go to this school and want to do well. why are these two character specifically rivals?

what does being academic rivals mean to them? getting better grades? beating each other to class?

what type of school do they attend? a private school? a boarding school? a public school? rivalry could look different in these settings.

what is their rivalry like, interaction-wise? do they make jokes and banter or is it genuinely something that affects them deeper than surface level?

how long has this rivalry been going on?

what is it stopping them from letting their rivalry go? pride and narcissism are good reasons, but it’s even better to go deeper.

what are you going to do as the author to make sure that they keep interacting? sure, they’re rivals at school. but that’s only a couple hours of your day. are they in clubs? do they share any extracirriculars? food for thought.

☑ think about all the feelings you would feel if you felt like your friends and family were wrong about everything and you felt you had to leave them: guilt, anger, sadness, etc.

☑ build a backstory explaining why they have changed and in what ways (how they think of different people and how they act).

☑ pick a flaw about them that they might want to change or might define who they are but can’t: arrogance, obsession, hatred, hurt, selfishness, etc.

☑ make them a bit of a protagonist: they fight themselves on stuff, don’t trust themselves, etc.

Virgil

has his hoodie tied around his waist

Weapon of choice would be a baseball bat

would only fight by self defense but would mostly try to avoid any fights

People fight him because they think he’s the weakest in the group

He’s not.

He has broken many bones that weren’t his

Taught himself how to disarm opponents the hard way

Would use opponents as human shields for gun shots

Has broken 13 wooden baseball bats and 2 metal ones

Would steal baseball bats and other things he wanted from stores.

He is a really good thief

Sometimes, he swaps broken baseball bats with new ones and would just put the price tag on it

He was never once caught stealing

He pickpockets, too

He would loot the bodies of the people he beat up

Roman

Still wears the same outfit cuz a prince has to slay

Would brush his hair back before a fight using his hand

Weapon would be a sword or kendo sword

would gracefully accept a fight

he rarely starts a fight

the reason why people would ask to fight him is to: “put his egoist ass in place”

would win without a doubt

He would insult people during a fight

He’ll try to look amazing during a fight

People who ruin his outfit gets either killed or their face ruined

Would be the only person in the group who would willingly kill someone

Logan

When approached for a fight, he would loosen his tie. If he’s really into it he’d throw his tie away

Weapon of choice would be his bare hands because he knows where to hit a person to either knock them out or paralyze them

He would ask opponents if they really want to fight

People would fight him because they can’t believe that a nerd can fight

He’s actually pretty scary, please don’t fight him

He had broken his knuckles multiple times and sometimes even his wrist

Has learned how to use people as human shields from Virgil

Patton

He would wear his casual outfit

Weapon of choice would be (NONE, HE IS WAY TOO INNOCENT)

Would always try to talk his way out of fights

But normally he just runs away

He would say that what they’re doing is wrong and they should think about the people who care about them

On rare occasions, they would cry because of how heartfelt (and true) his speech would be

These people would become his personal bodyguards.

If they see anyone messing with Patton, they’d fight them for him

They would have a close eye on Patton

One of them almost attacked Roman because he hugged Patton.

Patton has used a crowbar on someone before

Deceit

He is the leader of a gang Virgil was a part of

The others don’t know

Virgil is trying to stop any plans he has anonymously

He and the other gang members still see Virgil as an ally 

Virgil is trying his best to keep them all a secret from the others

Weapon of choice would be a gun

He would bring a cane around

He would take people who are bullied, abused, and have no place to belong into the gang

They have to go into initiation, which means beating people, stealing from stores and pick pocketing

Virgil was one of his favorites

He would get the job done without question

He accepted Virgil because he had no place to belong to at the time

it’s quiet in the car, and suna drives tensely, side eyeing you as you sit with your arms crossed. it’s evident you don’t want to be in the car with him, but even like this, he’s glad he gets to spend a little extra time with you alone.

“so…” he starts, and immediately, you cut him off, shutting him down firmly.

“no.”

suna purses his lips and sighs, eyes on the road as he continues to drive to your home, and you sit there fuming. you’ve been tricked. fooled. taken advantage of by your own friend as she goes home with some guy she meets. if she can’t drive you home from the party, it just has to be suna, and you wonder why the world is punishing you so cruelly this way.

“you know, i’m a pretty cool guy,” suna insists, turning to you with a raised brow when the car stops at a red light. “you should consider being a little nicer—”

“you’re lame and annoying,” you counter, and he scowls, scoffing that you have it in you to be so bold with him in his car as he drives you home.

“am not,” he bickers back. and the light is green now, but neither of you notice as you stare each other down.

you hate suna rintaro. you hate him so fiercely, you don’t think you’ll ever feel this passionately about anything else in your life. suna annoys you in every way possible. he acts like he doesn’t care, he slacks off in everything he does, he always rolls his eyes like he knows better, and he even stands around like he owns the place. and you hate him.

you also hate that he stood you up on a date he asked you on himself, but that’s besides the point.

“are too,” you huff childishly.

“look, if this is about that date a few months ago, i told you i mixed up the dates and—”

“it’s about how little you care about things,” you interrupt, and there’s a slight quiver in your voice as you speak. it makes suna’s heart drop, and he feels his stomach twist painfully.

suna rintaro has been in love with you since grade school. he thinks it’s a miracle you ever said yes to him in the first place, and if there’s one thing in his life, one thing at all that he’d do differently, it’s not mixing up the day of your date. he thinks maybe by now you could’ve been a happy little couple with stupidly annoying instagram pictures and obnoxiously ridiculous voicemails and whatever else couples do together. but suna always messes things up, and he wishes he wasn’t always doing things wrong no matter how hard he tries.

it has been too long my friends

for the sake of plot, everyone can magically understand everyone  and everyone happens to be vacationing in tokyo 

Is there a thing Hinata does that’s not epic? Quite frankly the answer is no. There are so many moments and I’m sure I’m gonna end up leaving out so many of them, but these are my favorites:

1. “I’m Hinata Shōyō, and I sprouted from the concrete. I’m going to beat you and go to the nationals”. My son literally takes no shit, especially from Ushijima Wakatoshi. I clapped SO HARD. (plus Kageyama reaction here is everything)

2. The match point against Aoba Johsai. Simply the most iconic point ever scored, I think not even the last point against Shiratorizawa has been that intense. Not to mention Hinata’s face right after, he wasn’t even incredulous, he was just…proud. :’)

3. The feint. The epicness of this moment is painted on everyone’s face, even on Bokuto who was actually the one who taught him that move. I just ADORE it with my whole self. 

4. Spiderman Hinata. Who…actually…does….something like this??? and acts like nothing happened??? like he didn’t just jump off a wall like that??? WHAT THE HELL HINATA

5. When he intentionally spiked at Oikawa. The fact that he didn’t even looked at the ball once while doing it its probably even more epic than the spike itself and than the fact that he purposefully smashed the ball right beside him…literally the fist time he met him. That definitely set up the mood…

I just…love my little birb, he’s so good (ಥ﹏ಥ)

•He has these big gorgeous eyebrows that are always on point and when he smirks one of them cocks up and Annabeth is inwardly like oh my gods seriously stop being so hot

•He has a deep tan, even darker than Annabeth’s

•His chest is the most prominent, muscular thing about him

•His hair is so black that whenever there are lights directly above him, his hair casts a glare

•His hair is wavy, and falls in his eyes if not properly trimmed. It is also soft as silk

•He has a very faint dusting of freckles over his nose that most people can’t see unless they’re standing close to him

•When he blushes, his cheeks turn bright, beet red and it spreads into his neck when he’s REALLY embarrassed

•Girls often think he wears cologne because his sea scent is so strong and pleasant

•His eyes get crinkly when he grins

•His eyelashes are so dark it almost looks like he wears eyeliner in certain lightings

•When he makes an angry face, his bottom lip juts out slightly (Annabeth thinks it’s cute but would never tell him that)

•Large hands with sun freckles, sun freckles going up and down his arms

•He eats sooo much and everyone wonders where it all goes

•He’s an emotional eater

•He always and only showers in the morning. The water energizes him so if he showers before bed he can’t get to sleep. If he showers in the morning, however, he is instantly groggy-free and ready to take on the day.

•He loves to cuddle

•He loves to nuzzle his face under Annabeth’s chin and in her collarbone when they cuddle

•He once tried having a staring contest with the giant statue of Zeus in Jason’s cabin to which Jason was like “dude stop that’s creepy ”

•He begged Chiron for a skateboard ramp within the camps borders to which Chiron politely declined

•He holds the record for falling the most while climbing to the top of the lava climbing wall at CHB

•He gave Jason a stapler for his birthday

•He loves cats but for some reason would never admit it but always cuddles with Annabeth’s cat when they visit her father’s house

•He once talked a shark out of attacking a group of mortals

•Has gone through 36 pairs of Converse

•His car still has Blackjack’s hoof prints

•He loves to cook. He has a blue “kiss the chef” apron with matching nemo oven mitts

•He’s terrible at cooking even though he loves it. “I’m not a bad cook mom, you KNOW I can make a mean pizza!” *takes frozen pizza from freezer and puts in oven*

•Even though Jason and the rest of the Argo II guys are really good friends of his, nobody ever took the place of Grover. Grover is still his best friend.

•The first thing Percy did after the war with Gaea (besides seeing his mom) was taking Grover out for enchiladas

•Video game wars with the guys are the best. Sometimes the girls play with them though and put the guys to shame; Percy frequently has these intense battles with Piper.

•After Nico admitted his crush on Percy, they actually became really good friends. “Dude I’m sorry you had to put up with this for so long” is what Percy frequently says instead of complaining that Percy is not Nico’s type.

•In fact, they become such good friends that Will often comes to Percy for advice about Nico

•Piper and Percy are great friends, and Piper never minds if Percy comes along when her and Annabeth are hanging out.

•When Annabeth is studying super hard and is stressed, Percy invites Piper over cause the two of them together help Annabeth relax and have fun once in a while.

•Percy went missing for a day. Annabeth flipped out because she thought it was Hera’s doing all over again, but she found him the next day passed out in the middle of the strawberry fields. Percy offered no explanation.

•Tyson sometimes surprise visits Percy at camp, and the two are always attached at the hip till Tyson has to leave.

•The Stoll brothers once pranked Percy by putting blue highlights in his hair while he slept. Percy ended up LOVING IT. “Thank you so much, guys!!” *crushes Stoll brothers in group hug*

•Percy always Iris Messages his friends at Camp Jupiter. Whether it’s Hazel, Reyna, or Frank, he always knows what’s up.

•Percy loves playing with Annabeth’s hair. She often has to swat his hands away when they are in the middle of something serious

•He has a slight, almost indecipherable New York accent, which usually becomes more prominent when he yells.

•His eyes are so bright green, it is the most prominent thing about him and one can usually see his eyes even when it’s dark.

•Hazel made him a blue and green embroidered bracelet with a trident, which he loves and never takes off.

•When he is angry or upset at dinner, the drinking glasses quiver.

•In one case, he got so angry that the toilets exploded. Again.

•When he is really mad or upset he just walks straight to the bottom of the canoe lake and sits there.

Insults and says he can’t stand him while threatening that he will kill Dazai someday.

But he actually never does and instead proceeds to save Dazai at the expense of his own life at every given opportunity.

“This is nothing but his bumbling. That dimwit Dazai is inside there. No doubt about it. I need to give him a smack, or I’ll never get over it.”

Says he hates him but then in moments of vulnerability says shit like this
