Last ligne droite for all my work!

All my exams/papers are due the second week of may, and then it’s thesis thesis thesis until the beginning of June!

It’s feeling good to be almost done! I still have a fair amount of work to do, so I’m trying not to relax just yet. Vincent left this weekend for une “enterrement de vie de garcon” party (or, bachelor party?), for one of his friends who is getting married in June, so I took the weekend to work and recharge a bit. Turns out I didn’t recharge too much, but I did work a fair amount! Sigh…

I did five interviews for my thesis, and an online survey, which has gotten a lot of success that last several days (yay for expat facebook groups)! I need to transcribe all of my interviews, which takes a fair amount of time (imagine, 3 hours for a 30 minute interview….and I have some that are much longer!). I only need to trascribe the interviews, do some statistics and finish up my results/conclusion. Not to mention my two papers, presentation and exam for the second week of may (well, I’ve finished one, started the other, and my presentation is basically on my thesis…?)

Otherwise things have been going well! Vincent and I (along with a big group of his friends from Rennes), are going to Rock n’ Solex in two weeks! And I’ve been organizing a bit for summer already. We’ll be occupied almost every weekend until August! (marriage for aforementioned friend, Solidays festival in Paris, Vincent/Serge’s joint birthday party, Charles’ housewarming party, 14 juillet in Toulouse, Allie’s coming to visit(!), and I planned a surprise trip-gift with Vincent’s parents for his (30th!) birthday so we’ll be going to Lisbon for a weekend…etc. etc. My summer is looking pretty nice at this point!!! Ahaha just need to finish up the thesis first.

I’ve was talking to some of my expat friends recently, and basically, whenever somebody does something strange enough, we classify it as “French,” though maybe it could be called more accurately, “Parisian.” This includes: a man yelling at the poultry guy in the farmer’s market for not correctly preparing his guinea fowl…the other day a lady (with that weird makeup style that’s getting popular here where people put just little eyeliner dots under their eyes, one for each eye, making them look like aliens and/or members of some kind of sect?) stepped in front of me in line at the bakery with a long “Meeerrcii” (after noticing I was waiting?), constantly bumping into everyone, everywhere (oh my god I swear people cannot walk in straight lines, this includes the metro guerre where everyone fights for space and no one says sorry)….whenever you speak, people look at you with this degrading confused look (because anyone with an accent is impossible to understand…), high-heel wearing french girls at la fac who look judging-ly at you when you walk by (I don’t look that weird do I?), every administrative procedure that takes 5 months and five letter-exchanges. I just have strange interactions sometimes (most times, involving french “politeness” and distance–people keep this kind of formal distance and sometimes it comes across as a bit…selfish?), and I feel like that kind of thing would never happen in LA…I feel like these might be “Parisian” annoyances…that just result from living in close proximity with one million people on a daily basis. Oh, Paris…In LA, we don’t live in such close proximity…or it’s so spread out, we maybe just don’t see other people as often?

There are good things too, though: I’ve made friends with my apple seller at the market (I’ve always had a thing for apple vendors) and we papote every saturday morning, people love going out for drinks and coffees here (I could tempt one friend for every night of the week if I wanted), people are very conscious of social issues here in general and people read a lot more in public. I’ve made some really great friends and there’s always so much to do and see. People are also a little less complexé about things that I’d be embarrassed by (talking about lettuce on the radio, adults reading comic books in the metro, adults riding scooters, all the french people I know love costume parties…) I mean, it’s not always annoyances, but I do enjoy venting sometimes…
