AU - Emma nervously returns to Storybrooke after spending the past couple of years away at University on the other side of the country. She’s finally returned after all that time and is finally ready to face the past, or the person, she’s been running away from. And while Storybrooke has remained very much the same there’s a new addition to her family, which Emma fears will push her out and after a painful end to the relationship with the love of her, Emma’s not certain if she’s ready to face Regina again but as Emma is about to find out, seeing Regina again isn’t going to be what she expects.

Emma and Henry sat in the first row, each with a bouquet of flowers.  Henry’s were gerber daisies, picked himself from the garden, Emma’s were purple irises, bought from Belle’s father.  They hadn’t arrived in time to see Belle before the ceremony, but it didn’t matter.  She would be coming home with them, and staying this time.  The two years to get her Master’s degree had been trying for all three of them, with long periods of separation as Belle had been in Boston and Henry and Emma had remained in Storybrooke.  It had been important to Belle, though, and anything important to her was important to Emma.

“Are they going to be done soon?” Henry whispered after Belle had walked across the stage to receive her diploma.

“Sorry, kid, there’s still a couple of speeches to go.”  Emma had only gotten her GED, but once they’d decided that they were staying in this world Belle had spoken of college degrees.  Her bachelor’s degree had been done entirely over the internet, but the Master’s in Library Science had called for something more hands on.  Now, though, it was all over and Emma would have her wife home full time.  

The content of the speech wasn’t something Emma could remember; her thoughts drifted as she thought about the summer before and how good it had been to wake up with Belle every day for months.  This time they’d have years.  Decades.

“Finally.”  Henry grinned as the announcement was made that the class of 2016 was now officially graduated.  When the crowd cheered Henry shouted out a loud “Go mama Belle!”

“Let’s go find her.”  Emma’s fingers were itching as she followed her son through the crowd of black; his height, a good four inches taller than her, helped find the petite brunette.

“Henry! Emma!”  Belle was the one to find them, her face glowing as she smiled at them.  She caught them both up in a hug.  

“You didn’t change your mind and decide you need a doctorate too, did you?” Henry asked, only half joking.

“Nope, if there’s going to be a doctor in the family it’s going to have to be you.  I just want to go home.”  Belle held a bouquet in each hand.  “I missed you guys too much.”

“We missed you too.”  Emma kissed her wife’s forehead.  “What’s say we go home.”

There’s so much of this world that she doesn’t know and even more that she doesn’t have the luxury of taking her time to figure out, not when Belle’s stomach swells with every passing day. Only a week or two at the most, the healer – doctor, she corrected – had said.

There will be a baby for them to watch soon, one that requires attention and care, something that Mulan isn’t so sure she knows how to give. Her own parents were kind, true, and they loved her, yes, but they treated her differently than her sisters, perhaps knowing that the future that awaited her was a path they would hate.

Would they still consider it a dishonor? Now, when she had saved lives, when she had found friends, when she brought them justice even after their demise? She doesn’t know, she doesn’t even know if they would welcome the part of her that would always be a warrior or if they would scorn it. And she never will. Death is final for most people, after all.

She doesn’t doubt that they loved her, but would they be ashamed of her? Is it possible to be both?

She didn’t want to subject Belle’s child to those same mixed feelings. The child might have been born from a father like that, who had a darkness about him even when he wasn’t the dark one, but they would have a mother who was kind, brave, and smart.

Storybrooke University is everything Emma had hoped for in acollege. She’d been pleasantly surprised to be accepted with a significantscholarship, and it was finally move-in day.

She’d texted with her roommate a few times- her name wasBelle French; she was majoring in English, and she had the bluest eyes Emma hadever seen. She was originally from Australia; she was coming on a student visa,and Emma was excited- she’d never so much as left the country before. She wasan only child, she loved to read, and she had a penchant for really high heels.

They got along well- in the two hours they’d spentrearranging their dorm room, they hadn’t argued once. Belle got along reallywell with her baby brother, Neal, and she won over her parents easily; she waspractically half her dad’s size, but still managed to help him carry the minifridge up the stairs.

Who is the most affectionate? I guess it’s Elsa, but mainly small actions, like holding and squeezing Emma’s hand.

Big spoon/Little spoon? My headcanon is that Emma is the big spoon, most of the time. 

Most common argument? Their walls, I think.

Favorite non-sexual activity? Chatting, I guess. They seem to be the kind of couple who just stay home cuddling and chatting for hours.

Who is most likely to carry the other? I don’t think any of them can carry the other…

What is their favorite feature of their partner’s? Emma’s favorite feature about Elsa are her hands; Elsa’s favorite feature about Emma is her neck.

What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other? I think both of them become more aware of the small touches and they start chatting less, looking more.

Nicknames? & if so, how did they originate? Els and Em, I guess. I think Emma calls Elsa your majesty sometimes when Elsa gets too bossy.

Who worries the most? I think Elsa is the one who worries the most, but Emma also worries a lot.

Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant? Elsa has a really great memory.

Who tops? At first, just Emma as she is the one with more experience. After some time, it starts varying.

Who initiates kisses? Usually, Elsa.

Who reaches for the other’s hand first? Usually, Elsa.

Who kisses the hardest? Emma.

Who wakes up first? Elsa.

Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer? Both, but Elsa usually wants to stay awake, cuddling, and Emma wants to just sleep a bit more!

Who says I love you first?

Who leaves little notes in the other’s one lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?) I’d say… none of them does it much.

Who tells their family/friends about their relationship first? Elsa tells Anna first.

What do their family/friends think of their relationship? I think eveyone is okay about their relationship. 

Who is more likely to start dancing with the other? Emma, for sure.

Who cooks more/who is better at cooking? Emma cooks better, but none of them cooks a lot.

Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines? Emma, just to make fun of Elsa and whoever is watching!

Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear during inappropriate times? Both of them do that.

Who needs more assurance? Both need it from time to time. I guess Emma needs more often.

What would be their theme song? Sad Song (We The Kings)

Who would sing to their child back to sleep? Both of them, they would fight to take care of their children!

What do they do when they’re away from each other? I think both of them would miss each other a lot, but they would be able to wait until they meet again without much despair.

one headcanon about this OTP that breaks your heart: Okay… I have this headcanon that Emma thought a lot about contacting Elsa while they were in Camelot.
