Pretty solid! You can't go wrong with Holland. I love her so much. I thought this was cute. Corey's voice is very Broadway but I enjoyed the songs. The plot was decent with how everything came together. I was obsessed with Lydia. What an icon. It was a good time.

Holiday Movies Are Approaching ~

If you weren’t aware, a while back the Hallmark Channel started working towards making their movies more inclusive. This has been shown so far through initiatives like the launch of their Mahogany imprint (a conscious effort to create movies representing Black women and their experiences), releasing movies with queer leads for the first time, and releasing movies with disabled leads for the first time. This is just to name a couple things off the top of my head, but there are others as well.

Their representation efforts still have a long way to go (and I would be glad to discuss that with folks as well), like...a reallyyyyy long way to go...but I only mention their efforts here because at the same time, another channel has started releasing holiday movies in an attempt to compete with the Hallmark Channel. This network is called GAC (Great American Country) and they have touted themselves as “family-friendly” content, which really just translates to white and straight. There’s a lot more drama that could be explained, but you can find several articles on the web about both companies if you wish, or I can discuss here sometime if people are interested.

Anyway, my point with this post was to just say that if you happen to be browsing the channels this holiday season looking for some holiday movies to watch, or if you decide to seek out cheesy movies at any time of the year, I encourage you to look to Hallmark (and Lifetime as well! I know less about them but they are certainly better than GAC in terms of diversity.) rather than watch anything on GAC. Better yet, I hope that we get an influx of independent cheesy holiday films made by people from marginalized communities instead (if you know of any, please do let me know so I can share!).

This obviously isn’t the most pressing issue for any marginalized community so take my words as just what they are, an attempt to make a small difference ~

I have to buy Christmas gifts for my highkey homophobic relatives because if they’re gonna shun me for being trans they better be upfront about it, I’m not going to give them any other “reasons” for it by God I am going to give them good gifts and they are going to have to justify hating me for other reasons.

Anyways. I spent 1 night searching etsy for the queerest stores I could possibly patronize, while also having products with plausible deniability for homophobic relatives bc I don’t want to start a riot on the spot I just want to have a nice innocuous gift that comes from a source that would absolutely make them furious if they knew. My goal was to find someone who donates to a charity like the Trevor Project so I could get An Innocuous Non-Gay Looking Item but cackle inside knowing that the gift money is actually going to The Gays.

Here’s some stores that I was delighted to find but didn’t quite make the cut for the incredible specific things I was looking for.

JabaCrafts: sells a variety of what looks like very nice soaps, some are Normal and could be used for Homophobic Relative Gifts, a percentage of money (they didn’t say how much..?) from the sale of only the Pride-themed soaps goes to local LGBTQ+ charities.

TrandleBoutique: Transwoman-owned shop with Pride candles. Also sells plain colored candles that could be used as Homophobic Relative Gifts whilst directly funding a trans artisan.

TBrosSoapCo: LGBT-owned (I”m assuming they’re a trans man based on the prominent T pun in the title, which also includes a hypodermic needle so heads up if you hate those, the soaps look like they come stamped with the design so unfortunately I can’t use these as Homophobic Relative Gifts but I love this store and may one day have to patronize them For Me) and their soaps look very nice

SpookiiBubbles: Has spooky/Halloween-themed stuff, which I love; also has a bi and a neon rainbrow pride design, donates the profits from the pride-themed soaps to the LGBTQ bail fund.

WildRaeBoutique: donates 3 dollars from the sale of every rainbow pride soap to the Trevor Project. Also has Innocuous Non-Gay Items For Homophobic Relatives.

Runner-ups: stores that are just very fun and also have 1 or 2 Pride options so like, casual allies

JiroSoap: INCREDIBLY CUTE soaps, some are CAT THEMED, have 3 rainbow designs and all are gorgeous

HarnettHeritage: just some very cute molded soaps in a variety of themes (I was sorely tempted by the Halloween potions set) and they have one rainbow pride option

HoneyBubbleSoaps: has one Pride design and some other very nice items (the rose loofah soap is beautiful and would make a great gift)

PeppyLittleSoapShop: has some very interesting soap designs/scents, also sells some pride designs and offers to custom-make any pride flags they don’t currently offer.

Bonus: items I’ve found that I, personally, am getting, for me

LA Ramen Girl: cute ghost pride pins, donates 10% to the Trevor Project.

TabKimpton: has a sparkly headstone patch that says CAN’T BURY THIS GAY and I have literally never in my life vibed with something more omg

The Ultra Stealth Gay Christmas Present for Homophobic Relatives

They have subtle pride-color candles and candles inspired by drag queens. The entire shop is gay as hell and donates a percentage (again idk how much but I believe them) to the Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian organization that helps queer people escape from persecution in other countries. And the candles just look cool and based on the reviews smell quite nice. They are a bit more pricey than some other stuff on this list, about 20 bucks per candle, but I’m willing to pay that price for a once-yearly Gay Rights Stealth Homophobic Relatives Gift.

((Additionally… not 2 shill but… I also have an etsy and it sells necklaces, mostly cottagecore-themed, I have some cute mushroom pendants, skull beads, fish vertebrae, one design is trans pride themed, hi im trans))

Hallmark Channel is airing their first Christmas movie with a prominent LGBTQ+ storyline this weekend (November 22nd, 2020). I've noticed some backlash from homophobes in the comments sections of Hallmark's social media posts about the movie.

All I'm sayin' is, it would be a real shame for those nasty bigots if this became Hallmark's number one rated and watched program of all time 👀👀👀👀

We’ve seen Julie Gonzalo in a number of Hallmark movies, but surprisingly this will be her first Hallmark Christmas movie! How she hasn’t been in one yet is a mystery to me, but I am personally really looking forward to Jingle Bell Bride, where she will star alongside Hallmark channel newcomer Ronnie Rowe. This movie is based off of Scarlet Wilson’s novel The Jingle Bell Bride. Hallmark fans, what do you think? Have you read the novel? Are you looking forward to the movie adaptation? :)

A Christmas Tree Grows in Brooklyn will star Mark Taylor and Hallmark holiday movie newbie Rochelle Aytes! You may recognize Mark Taylor from 2018′s Memories of Christmas. He was wonderful in that movie, so I’m excited to see him in another one this season! Likely the movie title is a reference to the 1943 novel and 1945 movie A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but I wonder if the story will have any similarities. Hallmark has shown movies in the past very loosely based on some novels (there are several Austen-related ones). It will be interesting to see if they take any inspiration from the classic novel.

According to the Hallmark Channel’s website these are the films we’re getting for this year’s Fall Harvest movie block.

Love at Look Lodge Premieres Saturday, September 26 9pm/8c Lily dreams of being a hotel event coordinator and is thrilled when she’s given the chance to do so by helping Noah, a hotel guest, finish planning his sister Justine’s wedding at a remote lodge. Stars Clark Backo and Jonathan Keltz.

Country at Heart Premieres Saturday, October 3 9pm/8c A struggling country singer meets a Nashville songwriter in need of inspiration. Teaming up to write a song, their work gets complicated but results in both a hit song…and true love. Stars Jessy Schram and Niall Matter and Lucas Bryant.

Neverbrides Premieres Saturday, October 10 9pm/8c Josie Hughes is a hopeless romantic who believes in the kind of romance in black-and-white movies where the leading lady finds her one true love and gets swept off her feet. She also believes the wedding bouquet always finds its way to the right person when tossed by the bride, as proven time and again at weddings dating back to her childhood. But single Josie ends up with the bouquet at her friend Emma’s wedding instead of their not-single friend Athena and fears she’s wrecked her chances of getting engaged. Just last year, Hallmark faced backlash for their decision to pull an ad from their lineup that featured a same-sex couple. Although it was later added back to the channel, the damage to their image had (rightfully) already been done. On Saturday, August 15th, Hallmark is premiering their first movie that has a same-sex couple getting married. Even though they have a long way to go in regards to inclusivity and diversity (I mean, this couple isn’t even the lead in the movie), this is leaps and bounds ahead of where they were at this point last year.

This movie comes soon after the network’s announcement to include more diverse storylines in their 2020 holiday movie lineup. George Zaralidis, vice president of network program publicity at Crown Media Family Networks, said, “Diversity and inclusion is a top priority for us and we look forward to making some exciting programming announcements in the coming months, including announcements about projects featuring LGBTQ storylines, characters, and actors.”

The comments sections of Hallmark Channel’s and the leading actors’ social media pages have been disappointing but not surprising, with hateful messages abound, but hopefully enough people will express their support of the direction the channel is going so that we can continue to see them work to present more diversity.
