Hi, I found your page from searching for theology on here and I was really curious and wondering if you could talk about your bachelors study and how it’s going right now? I was just accepted for a bachelor theology program and am trying to discern if I really want to continue with this theology bachelor program or perhaps psychology. I’d love to hear a solitarily anything you’d feel comfortable sharing about your experience, why you chose theology, and what you plan to use your bachelor for, if anything! Thank you in advance and God Bless!,
Hi!! Thank you for your question and well done on your pursuit of further education!
For some context, I have two bachelors already (Secondary Teaching and Visual Arts), and worked as a high school teacher for a couple of years. Whilst I love teaching, I got burnt out and had some health issues so I left the profession.
I’m studying theology because I wanted to learn more about the Christian Faith - I was raised evangelical Christian but shamed for being a lesbian, and it drove me away altogether. So I started doing research and trying to learn what Christianity really was, which led me to Catholicism and I started RCIA! And tomorrow im finally getting confirmed!!!! The Catholic Church has been so accepting and I’ve found my way back to Christ.
In terms of what I want to do with the theology bachelor, I think it’s mainly just for my own curiosity. I want to learn more about the history of Christian faith and how it has shaped us. I am taking it slowly though, doing one class a sem because of my mental health. I do think though, once im done that I may go back to teaching in a Catholic environment- either teaching art again or RE. But if I choose not to use it for anything, then satisfying my own curiosity was enough.
I have found the content to be really cool, especially because learning the context of things mentioned in the Bible gives it so much more meaning, there’s so much I would have breezed over or taken the wrong way before realising the context of Jewish cultures at the time.
For your education, I would honestly study whatever is more interesting to you. I’m not sure where you are, but if you’re in somewhere like Australia where we can study for “free” with HECS debt, then I would say why not study both!! But if you have to choose, do something you will love, not what will be more “responsible” for a career etc. you never know where a degree may take you. Also, don’t feel you have to study theology if your heart isn’t in it!! God will bless you whatever vocation you choose, and He can lead you to places who will teach you whatever your heart desires to know.
Thank you again for the question! If you have anymore feel free to comment or send me a message and we can chat. God bless ❤️❤️
