enchanting-barmaiden :
The moon was high and the people of Abdera were all rushing to their homes now, careful to meet the curfew. Azula stood atop the eastern battlements, staring out at the sea. The wind was salty, warm as it whipped her dark hair around. Her remaining wing, her right one, twitched just a bit at the tease of the breeze. It was quiet and she enjoyed the view of the moonlight reflecting off of the ocean as water lapped at the sandy shores of Nysa. It was almost blissful. Almost.
Her eyes slowly opened as the sound of footsteps approached. They lacked the familiar clink of guards’ armor so she knew that she wasn’t in trouble. Or at least she hoped she wasn’t. Azula did turn to face her visitor, instead choosing to remain at her post upon the stone. “Seeking me out in particular…?”
A sad smile crossed Aracelia's lips when she spotted the faerie's silhouette framed by the moonlight. The Queen approached the battlements with caution, she’d heard what had happened to Azula at the Coronation, Aracelia wasn’t certain her presence would be entirely welcome. “I figured you’d had enough time hiding yourself away.” The blonde’s words were blunt, but Aracelia was not the woman people turned to when they needed kind words, the Queen may have adored Azula but that wouldn’t change the way she thought grief had to be dealt with. Azula knew that.
onceslain :
“Ah, that.” Arabella’s fingers fiddled just a bit as she turned her face away. Her gaze dropped thoughtfully. “I’m certain His Grace does.” A king should learn to rule even through his grief was upon the tip of her tongue, but she wouldn’t be caught criticizing Elric to anyone else. “We have hunting parties out all hours of the day, and guards are torturing those that are caught for more information. If you have men to spare, we could use them. Other than that, Your Grace… your counsel, perhaps. Any words of wisdom are always welcome at council meetings.”
“Of course, most of my soldiers are protecting Tanaia’s borders from any possible external threat, I’m sure there are countless numbers who would gladly volunteer to assist here.” Strategy was not a problem for the Queen, Aracelia had the strongest military in the world, donating a few men to support her ally was a simple matter, but words of wisdom? That was something the Queen had never been trained in. “I’m not sure my counsel is of as much value, My Lady. Although if you really think I could help Ill try my best.”
onceslain :
“I’m sure whatever you need is far more important than the letters I’ve been left to write this afternoon. There’s no need to apologize, Your Grace.” Arabella rested her hands on the armrests of her chair, eyeing the young queen thoughtfully. “Whatever questions you have, ask them. And sit, if it please you.”
“Thank you, My Lady.” Aracelia said politely as she pulled out a seat across from Arabella. “I came to discuss Nysa’s plans to fight off The Fangs. I would have asked Elric how I could help but... I’m sure he has enough to worry about at the moment.”
Being nearly a millennia in age endowed one with enough patience to accomplish almost anything, no matter how menial the task. Time seemed to pass differently when you had experienced so much of it already. Slower, as though the whole world were covered in molasses. Unfortunately, that didn’t mean that going over ledgers and writing business letters became more entertaining, no matter how old you were.
Nevertheless, Arabella was fully engrossed in her work. A message written to the governor of Illyrium, written in the neat, delicately curving letters of her handwriting. Not a letter of dire importance, but one that needed to be gotten done sooner rather than later. With the Fangs plaguing the kingdom, the she-elf had found herself busier than ever.
The point of her quill scratched over parchment as she sat warmly in a beam of sunlight that pierced the council chamber. Her pointed ears were hidden beneath a tumble of silken gold curls, and she was frowning thoughtfully down at her own work. A cramp was starting in her hand, but she allowed herself no break.
She was so engrossed in her writing that she didn’t notice someone entering the room. It wasn’t until the person on the other side of the table spoke that she realized she was no longer alone — words she didn’t catch. She marked a looping signature on the page, and then finally looked up. Cool blue eyes fixed on her visitor. —
“I’m sorry to disturb you, Councillor.” The Queen’s gave a quick apology when she saw that Arabella appeared busier than she’d anticipated. “I had a few questions for you although they are far from urgent. I can return later if you wish?”

“Begging is not my strong suit your highness. I’m grateful you unshackled me and I am still hoping this plan will work. You speak truth, I’m a bad guy. If you want to punish me then do it. I surely deserve.” He could almost taste the blood from another approaching blow. He could feel the guards growing agitated by his attitude. “I’m not going to beg you for mercy. The mistakes I made led me here to bring to light a plan to free us all from the evil of the fangs. If I had not become a pirate, trading with vampires and selling blood I would never been in the place to offer this service. If you want me to be sorry for the person I am then you are asking too much. Sometimes people have to do what they have to do. We do not get everything handed to us from the safety of our castle walls. Odds are that the fangs will not breach your walls anyway. It’s the commoners, people like me who fear the most.”
Roderik sighed heavily. He knew his words were sharp and his fate uncertain but he could not refrain from being an idiot. “ I try to stay away from his majesty King Elric. He terrifies me so. Perhaps he’s jealous of my charming good looks. You know how the ladies love a bad boy. Maybe….mmm maybe I did attack some people. I cannot recall. I been trying to turn over a new leaf recently.”
“Your highness, I’m asking you to look past my past and see the man I’m choosing to be in this moment. I’m here to try to help everyone.”
“It is something that a supposed reformed criminal might want to learn.” Aracelia responded, her voice softer and the lethal glint gone from her eyes after Roderik finished his speech. “I understand that you may have a complex history but I cannot ignore your present either. You made a wise choice bringing this plan of yours to Tanaia, our army is more capable than any other and we have far more intelligence on the Fangs than most other kingdoms.” A ghost of a smile was forming on Aracelia’s lips as she began to move towards the prisoner. “And, if I do decide I can trust you, I would be willing to offer you a pardon for your previous crimes. Although you may consider not making jokes about a good king and my good friend.” There was a joking tone to the Queen’s last words, but her eyes remained serious as she extended a hand to the pirate.
“Of course not, Your Grace.” Bailin smirked and lifted his eyebrows at the dark look she gave him. “But I wonder how well you fare when you’re distracted.” Grinning like a fool, Bailin slinked behind her and simply stood there, towering over her. He dared not place his hands on her waist, shoulders, or anywhere else. The last thing she needed was rumors flying of her consorting with someone not of noble birth. “Let’s see how good you are then,” he said with a nudge.
Bailin’s restraint did not escape her, and though the Queen appreciated his concern Aracelia wasn’t in the mood to worry about politics and petty gossip.“You underestimate me, Bailin. It will take more than that to distract me these days.” In a quick movement, Aracelia lifted the great bow and sent the arrow flying and easily hitting her mark. “Better than you, I would say.”

“Any child that is either royal or noble or all children that live in your kingdom including those of the poor? Are they given the same opportunities when it comes to their education or are they forced to work out in the fields with their parents because they cannot afford a proper education?” Yvaine rose a brow, trying not to glare at the queen. “Neither the kingdoms of Azmarinia and Orilion are idle nor have they repressed their people if that is what you are trying to imply.”
“So you have not had any privileges because of your status, My Lady?” Aracelia challenged, certain that neither of the Duchess’s kingdoms had much equal opportunity for their peasants. “Most Tanaian children are educated in the mountains with the best instructors in the world, from there most join the army. People earn respect based on their merit, not on how much money they have. Can you say the same for your kingdom?”

Are you with me?
captain-darkfyre :
“I do not require pardon Milady because contrary to your belief and judgement I am not a criminal. I am a businessman and I… Never mind. It’s always the same with noble blood. Everyone looks at me like I am the scum of society but the truth is that I actually have a heart. No matter what you do I’m carrying out my plan. Helping people is something I cannot ignore when I have the means. The only downfall is that your name will not be on the heroic outcome. Forgive my outburst but I do have pride. Do you even know what crimes you speak of? Or is simply owning my own ship enough to deem me a scoundrel?” Roderik was not a man who took to authority well. He hated feeling judged or held like a cat stalking a mouse. He truly believed he was s good guy who ran a good business and the fact no one saw that angered him, offended him even. “I simply hate to feel judge when you know me not. Being labeled a pirate is a blessing and a curse because nobody approaches you so you get to be alone and I like being able to think like that but I also like company and friends but I don’t get much of that because everyone sees Roderik the scoundrel because of the way I dress or just the fact that I own a ship and I’m not part of the Royal Navy.”
Roderik turned to pace in front of the woman with his eyes on the floor as he spoke, “pirates pillage, steal, kill, basically whatever they want. I trade product for profit. The products I make myself and while I do acquire some products by means of thieving you can rest assured in the fact that no innocent person is harmed. I came across a ship of the kingdom Orilion the other day. There was a storm and they were sinking. What would you say I did? Did I loot the ship and leave the crew to drown? Or did I save the crew and as much cargo as I could and take them home repaying what they lost?”
This time he looked at her with unfaltering eyes that blinked not. “According to you and your judgments I should have left them and taken what I could but you should know that I didn’t. Ask the soon to be queen if you do not believe me. She found me later and tried to reward me.” He laughed. “And contrary to what you might think, I didn’t accept her gold.”
“You should be begging for my mercy, pirate. I have offered you more forgiveness than most criminals get yet you choose to insult not only me but my people as well.” Aracelia said, her words cutting through the air like a knife. “My guards told me that you’re a wanted criminal in Nysa because you’ve attacked countless innocent people, do you deny this? Or is King Elric misinformed. I can’t see how protecting the people of Orilion would matter to me or the other people you have attacked.” The thought that perhaps she was being too harsh flitted through her mind, but Aracelia’s anger was growing and she couldn’t bring herself to feel much sympathy for the pirate anymore, even if the plan he had presented to her could have helped.
There was a childlike glint of joy in the Queen’s eyes as she took the elegant longbow in her hands, her regal gown had been traded in for practical trousers and a loose fitting shirt for the day. Gleefully, Aracelia turned to face her companion. “I bet I can take down that apple!” She declared proudly,a devilish grin forming on her lips as she pointed to a lone apple hanging from a tree nearby.
Elara had gone out to practice her archery, refusing to get sloppy at the weapon she loved. She was paired up with the queen she had met earlier in the week, who appeared with just as much love towards archery. “Take your shot then, let’s see if you’re right.” Elara laughed.
"I haven't shot around an expert for quite a while, I hope my technique is not too bad." Aracelia commented as she raised the bow, watching as it soared through the air and hitting her target.

“If you can then perhaps I’ll bake it into a pie for you.” Bailin laughed softly, leaning against a stone pillar adjacent to Aracelia. He knew well enough that she could hit the apple. “Let’s see if you still remember what I taught you,” he said with a wink. He couldn’t help but to fondly remember her as he first knew her, a child toppling under the weight of the weapons as she bullheadedly insisted that she could wield all of them. “I wonder: do you still fall on your ass when you try to load your crossbow?” he teased.
"Do you doubt me, Bailin?" Aracelia asked teasingly, another childish giggle escaping her lips. The queen shot him a glowering look as she reached for an arrow and aimed it towards the tree. "It's been over twenty years since those days, Bailin. You should know I'm an expert with crossbows now." The Queen laughed her reply.
Aracelia raised a quizzical eyebrow, this was certainly a brave woman to be so openly rude to a queen. “I would be inclined to agree with you if what I said wasn’t true.” The Queen admitted, lifting her bow with a grin. “However, I’ve been shooting arrows since I learned to walk.” She continued coolly, watching as the loosened arrow easily hit its mark.
“Then that is different. You have been shooting since you were a child. I am sure that not all Tanaian children have had the same education as you have. I am sure that not all of them have been doing this since they learned to walk.” Yvaine watched the arrow as it hit its mark. “I just do not like to generalize a whole group of people. I know that the education and training of royals is different than that of ordinary people.”
Aracelia worked not to let the offense she felt show on her face. How could she not know how hard Tanaia's leaders worked to ensure that all their children had the best education they could. "I may not have gone to school with other children my age, but I can assure any child educated in Tanaia is just as good as I am." The queen replied. "My country did not gain its reputation through idleness and repression of its people like some kingdoms."

“Now you are just sound pigheaded and like you are bragging. Not something I thought a queen would do even one who is running wild and all that.” Yvaine shrugged, “I do not want anything. I just want to see if you hit it.”

yvaine-starfall :
Yvaine had taking a page out of the queen’s book. She wore a pair of trousers and a shirt instead of one of her usual gowns. It was much easier to move around this way. Looking from the apple to the tree, Yvaine smirked. “And what do I win when you miss by a foot and end up hitting something else instead your majesty?”
“You must not be familiar with the education of Tanaian children, My Lady.” Aracelia sung back, her smile filled with pride and teasing. “Tanaians don’t miss, but if I were to miss, what would you want?”
