The Juliet to your Romeo

Specifically to this woman. 

Earlier today, Jo Cox, a Labour MP in Northern England, was stabbed and shot at an event in a library. 

It has just been confirmed that she has died due to the attack. 

She was a great campaigner and humanitarian, and has left behind a husband and two children. 

This kind of event happens rarely in the UK, and so this is terrifying and destabilising that such a horrific thing has happened to such a compassionate person. 

This is massive and shocking.

We don’t have shootings on the scale that the US has shootings. And people don’t try to kill our representatives. They mock them on Twitter whilst watching #BBCQT (BBC Question Time).

It just… doesn’t happen. Shouldn’t happen.

There’s very little that’s actually fundamental about being British (or at least, that we can be proud of) but I’d like to think that there’s that. That however broken our democracy might sometimes be, we have it out in muttered grumblings and dry satire. Sometimes, someone throws an egg at a respected politician and he haphazardly throws a punch*. That’s British polics.

It isn’t the stuff of armoured cars.

Our MPs cycle places. They dangle from zip wires. They get caught taking the rubbish out in their jarmies.

And someone who reportedly stood for ‘Britain First’ shot and stabbed a woman for representing her people. I can’t imagine anything less British than that.
