Original source Image description: Historical botanical illustration showing a caterpillar and a striped butterfly on a plant with large green leaves, some with holes. The caterpillar is black with spines and positioned on a stem near a brown chrysalis. The fruit on the plant is round and orange-brown, with one cut in half displaying seeds inside. William Morris's "The Defence of Guenevere" put a different complexion on her adultery. Harrison notes that it was too radical for most readers when first published (1858), but became influential later. Brickdale's representation of her, as beautiful and at one with surrounding nature, seems to confirm a shift in sympathies.
