Could it honestly be that simply?  He pressed back into the kiss his mind going about a hundred miles an hour.  It probably could…”Been fighting my whole life…i’m just so tired…” he said in a quiet voice.  ”Made a promise to you…” he said tapping the dog tags through his shirt.  ”Always come home…I’ll talk to ya…”

Stroking his hair softly, Steve nuzzled against James' cheek lovingly. "I know, baby, and you've been so strong for so long, it's time for you to let someone else help you and be strong for you," he murmured softly, kissing him again softly. Looking down as the dog tags were tapped, he reached up and caught his hand gently. "Thank you... because I'm not about to let this fall apart, you and Irina mean too much to me for that."

James was aware that his daughter knew that something was wrong.  How could she not?  She was a smart girl…had seen him in some of his more paranoid states when they had first started to run.  ”I don’t know what to do Steve…”

"You stay..." Steve said bluntly, looking at James. Pushing his fingers through his hair again, he leaned forward and kissed his fiance gently. "You stay and you fight with me. And you trust me to take care of you and Irina. We'll make it through this, baby, I promise. Just promise me you won't run... come and talk to me when you get scared. Let me be here for you."

"N-Need help…been trying…trying to stop feel like I gotta be prepared….and frightened.  I don’t…"  He didn’t know what he was saying he did not want.  Or know.  "I"m always afraid…"

Sighing softly, Steve stepped forward and wrapped his arms around James' shoulders. "It's okay, baby... I get it, I do," he murmured, burying his face against his neck. "I know we can makes this work... I love you, and I'm never going to let anything back happen to you or Princess. You know that right?" Leaning back, he pushed his hand gently through James' hair. "This isn't just hard on me and you, James... she knows something's off too..."

As much as he did not want to believe it, it was true.  ”M tryin’ Steve…I really am…just hard…”

"I know it's hard, James. I do," Steve murmured softly, reaching over to take his hand. "And I'm not saying things are hopeless. We can work through this... I just have to know you're still in this with me. Lately... it just... it just seems like you've checked out from everything. And it scares me..."
