Narrowed down a list of four eponyms to one today. Why? I might weave one into my dissertation, if I can make it work. While each one has its merits, I’m going with Gall’s Law. The last one is a bit grim, and the other two don’t really dovetail with my methodology. Also, I realize the reader has no context here. This post is mostly a note to myself, I suppose.

Conway’s Law: “Any piece of software reflects the organizational structure that produced it.”

Gall’s Law: “A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.”

Goodhart’s Law: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”

Pournelle’s iron law of bureaucracy: “In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely.”
