         as his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer, amelie surrendered to the warmth of his embrace. their foreheads touching, she could feel the intensity of his emotions, emotions mirrored in her own. when his lips met hers, it felt like a long-awaited reunion, a moment of healing and solace amidst the chaos they had endured. 

   as arthurs lips met hers, a soft sigh escaped her, eyes closing as she melted into the kiss, losing herself in the connection they shared, savouring every second her lips were against his. slowly her hands found their place on his chest, feeling his heartbeat beneath her fingertips.

He has waited for her for the longest time, hoping things would be different, and that she would change her mind and return to him. He is in awe, every aspect of her beauty shines as she remained in his grasp. She is a picture of perfection.

  her heart softened as he spoke, acknowledging their shared struggles and the challenges they faced in their relationship.it was more pain and torment than either of them deserved, and there in that moment all she wished for was it to stop then and there.

her eyes closed at the gentle touch, breathing in slowly before looking back up to him, committing every detail of his face to memory —the curve of his jaw, the tenderness of his lips, the way his eyes sparkled with emotion. “it’s true that our journey has been filled with challenges, but i wouldn’t trade any of it, even my darkest moments, for it has led me to you once more, here in london.” she paused, lips parting as she did so, her heart beating wildly against her chest. “i do not want you to wait for me any longer.”

      Everything they had been through, the heartache, uncertainties, despite it all, they remained by each others side. He felt that fate brought them together, through the thick and thin of their love, they found their way back to each other. He questions everything when without her, and soon as she is in his arms he does not wish to let go.

Arms wrap gently around her waist, pulling her close and leans his forehead against hers. Without saying a word, his lips meet hers, hand moving to cup the side of her face. He pulls her into him, gently, hands remaining on her hips.

“well then i strongly suggest that you put these difficulties out of your mind for the longer you dwell on them the more this beautiful day will escape you,” she suggested strongly. “then please allow a new member of the ton to distract you for a moment,” emiliya stated as she slipped her arm through his and tugged him along with her. “how long have you lived here for?”

    his words caused the brunette to pause in her step biting down on her lower lip as he questioned her. she knew her actions were contradictory, and she couldn’t blame him for being confused - she herself still was. 

she took a deep breath before responding, her voice soft and sincere. “i understand why you might be confused…i have not made the easy on you, and for that i’m truly sorry. i wanted distance to figure out my emotions, to speak to others about my concerns. but despite my reservations….i’ve missed you. i thought that perhaps you would of won my basket and i could of spoken to you. but i just…i need you to know that i don’t wish to lead you on with vague comments and mixed messages. i don’t want to let go of what we have, and i don’t want you to think i want anything more than you.”

   He respected her want for time to herself, but when he noted that this ‘time to herself’ seemed to involve Hamish, it made him angered and question everything. He had no right to be jealous, despite his unhappiness, she could see whoever she wanted, and he could not stand in the way of it.

Upon hearing her words, he exhaled, hand moving to gently cup hers, thumb brushing over the top of her knuckles. “Our time has hardly been smooth sailing, and i know I am partly responsible for it. We were stolen the chance of happiness, and I feel we both perhaps feel we will never get it, when it has been stripped from us so many times.” He exhaled, shaking his head. “I will always be here waiting for you, you have always been, and always will be, my eternal love.”

    the silence after her words felt deafening for those stretched out minutes, her breath caught in her throat, a shaky breath parting her lips as he agreed to her invitation. she would not of been angry at him if he had rejected her - after what she had asked of him it seemed almost cruel to ask for the opposite all of a sudden. 

but even in that moment, as arthur reached his arm out momentarily she yearned for him, for his touch, for the familiarity of the man. slipping a slender hand into his lowered arm she tightened the grip her fingers had, silently hoping that he would not pull further away, unable to hide the nervous smile that came to her lips. 

Her touch was familiar, wholesome -- but he was doing his best to not jump to such conclusions. After all, she had proposed they distance themselves, and now she remained in close proximity. He felt confused, not wishing to overstep boundaries, but felt led along , a feeling he wished did not exist between them.

As her arm slipped through his, he guided them on their walk, exhaling a sigh as he prepared for what he needed to say. “Can I be honest with you?” He spoke , turning her slightly to face him. “I am confused -- I know this is not simple but for one moment, you want nothing to do with me, and now this?” He posed, sighing deeply. “I am not intending to argue but I cannot excuse my confusion.”

    amelie took a deep breath, trying to read the emotions behind arthur’s words and actions. she could sense his frustration and perhaps a touch of jealousy - but she didn’t wish to bring up further unpleasantness. 

“thank you arthur.” she spoke softly, her hand cradling the other as she toyed with her nails, uncertain of what to say. “i…i have a little time before, if you’d care to look through the stalls with me?” she offered, her eyes glimmering with a sliver of hope as she looked up to him. “i have missed your companionship.” 

      He felt uncertain, their relationship tainted at the hands of others. He believed life would be less complicated if they could leave together, escape the prying eyes and spend some time alone. Such a prospect brought him joy, but he could not ask this of her, not with what they had been through.

she gave a small nod of acceptance as she stepped a little closer to him and pursed her lips. “i thought you’d be able to, for it is such a terrible day to be frowning,” she chimed as her hands tucked and folded behind her back. “you looked off and it is a time to be joyous wouldn’t you say? though what has put you in such sad spirits?”

   though the events that had come to light upset amelie greatly, deep down she knew that it was through no fault of arthur’s - his fathers lies surrounding her disappearance. it had taken her a great deal of time to think about what she would of done in his place - what her parents had pressured her to do once she was healthy enough to leave home again….she could not hold a grudge over his past actions. 

“i know.” she spoke, her voice soft and gentle. amelie couldn’t help but note a nervousness in the man for the first time since their fates had entwined. looking down to his hands momentarily she brushed her own against his, trying to catch his gaze. “i saw that you had bid on my basket. i….i would of greatly enjoyed had you won.”

      he feared where this conversation was going, gaining a sense of dread from the moment she began her sentence. however, the doom did not appear, instead it appeared she was making small talk. he was unsure if this was out of politeness, or endearment. “i did, but it appears a certain someone beat me to it.” he snarled a little, eyes avoidant of hers.

it was of not her own doing, but it did not make it any easier. he knew the males motives, even if she did not see it. he sighed , shaking his head. “despite who won, i do hope you enjoy your time.”

    amelie could not help but smile warmly at his response, quietly relieved that the words directed at her were soft. she did not expect anything less from arthur, he was a gentleman after all, but a small part of her had feared he would not wish to speak with her. looking to the stall for a moment, eyes looking over the pastries before finally looking up at him once more.

a silence fell between the two of them, the air feeling charged with unspoken words and emotions. taking a deep breath amelie summoned the courage to address the uncomfortable situation between them. “arthur, about before… i hope you understand why i needed some space. it’s just that learning about everything felt a bit overwhelming, and i needed time to sort out my thoughts,” she said, her voice soft and sincere.

he wanted things to return to their normality, the times in which they held each other in high regard felt like a distant memory. he had tainted their relationship, despite how unintentional this may be. he had himself to blame, and he did, countlessly considering why he had done what he did. he had believed she no longer loved him, and was in search of love, but did not find it.

the silence was deafening, but he truly, for the first time in his life, did not know what to say. he had grown to expecting the worst, especially in regards to their love. this felt irreparable. “i understand, though it doesn’t make it easy.” he mumbled, eyes avoidant of hers, fearing he may crumble. “but i appreciate this is what you need, and i will not hinder that.”

“you sir,” pausing she moved from her perch and made her way to the strange lord with a playful smile upon her lips, “look as though someone has kicked your puppy,” her voice was teasing as she moved towards him, most people of the ton still unknown to her. “surely you can grace us with a wee smile, yes?”

   amelie couldn’t help but feel a strange mixture of happiness and sadness upon finding out that hamish had won her basket, not arthur as she’d expected. however a picnic with her friend was still something pleasant to experience, as much as she’d hoped arthur would have won to spend time with one another once more. though she supposed it made things less uncomfortable. after requesting space to be alone with her thoughts she could not expect him to insist on spending time with her once more. 

and so she’d found herself wandering the stalls of the summer fete, weaving between the bustling crowds in order to find sight of the man she wished to see - her eyes lighting slightly at the sight of the man. “i suppose you’ve come for the baked goods too? i could smell it from across the stalls.” she commented, her lips betraying her happiness to see him by curving into a small smile. 

he had remained distant after their previous converse, not wishing to step out of turn, or not give her the space she seemed to need. he had made himself useful, overseeing his sister whilst she indulged in the auction and festivities. in honesty, his mind was distant and he felt he was not doing a good job and pretending. his temper was short, and nerve was evident. nevertheless, he had overseen what he could, before exploring the fete himself. he had always enjoyed his own company, so such things came naturally to him.

eyes fixated on the baked goods in front of him, purchasing two pastries, almost a natural reaction. once he realised, he sighed, but chose not to correct himself. he paid, before retrieving the bag. he had not realised how routine it had become to have her in his life. her words startled him, eyes flickering quickly to her before softening at the sight. 

“you know i can’t resist.” he smiled weakly, turning to face her. “the smell is certainly compelling.” in truth, he did not know what to say in this moment, and thus made small talk.

the other wasn’t wrong for marcus did used to better than this, he used to be a kinder man. a more friendly man. things had changed over the years, ever since he started his secret affair he had grown colder to the world, his kinder self being only shown to the one he loved, even his own family got his cold shoulder from time to time. marcus knew that he had changed over the years and the other man was not wrong and he could deny it no longer. “you are right.”

phoebe nodded her head silently as she observed the older male standing beside her . it was often difficult trying to decipher what was going on within arthur’s mind as he did not tend to show his emotions when compared to graham . “ how much of a mess are we speaking ? ” the younger enquired as one eyebrow raised upwards .

Amelie’s heart was heavy with conflicting emotions as she listened to Arthur’s explanation. Part of her wanted to believe him, to trust that he was being sincere about his feelings for her and that there was nothing romantic going on between him and Defne. But another part of her couldn’t shake the feeling of hurt and insecurity that lingered.

Amelie took a deep breath, gathering her strength. “I don’t doubt that you care about me, Arthur. But trust is something that is earned and can be easily shattered. You did not lie to me, but you did hide the fact she works for you…and I cannot ask you to turn her from work, but I don’t need to pretend to be happy she is still so close to you.”

“I don’t want to lose you, Arthur, but I also can’t ignore how much this has affected me. I need space to figure things out, to heal. And I need you to respect that.” Her voice held a hint of plea, a silent request for him to understand the depth of her pain and the importance of her own healing process.

Despite the pain that struck his chest at her proposed ‘distance’, he believed it would do them good to spend some time apart. Despite the time they had spent away from each other, her stance on her friendship with another, this was something that hurt him, and he was not willing to stand another man trying to pledge his stake, when he was there awaiting her all along. He hoped she would see this in time. 

“I did not hide the fact she works for me, I did not feel it relevant to our discussion.” He sighed, shaking his head. “I understand however, that this would make you uncomfortable.” He remained quiet for a moment, turning away from her.

“I understand -- perhaps the time apart would help, the both of us that is.” He swallowed hard, avoiding her gaze for a moment. Things had become complicated, more than he had ever wanted for either of them. “I do not wish to lose you either, but I respect your decision for space.”

Amelie’s heart wrenched as she listened to Arthur’s admission. The pain of his words reverberated through her, and she couldn’t deny the pang of jealousy that swept over her. It hurt to know that he had sought solace in someone else’s arms, even if it was driven by his own loneliness.

She took a deep breath, attempting to steady her trembling voice. “I want to believe that you’re being honest with me now, that you’ve made things right with Defne. But trust is fragile, Arthur, and it will take time to rebuild what has been broken. And for you to have her still in your home…I’ve spent time with her.” she whispered, eyes stinging with tears at the realisation.

He feared neither of them would see eye to eye over recent events, and this would lead to a larger divide between them. All he wished to do was hold her, and yet it was entirely inappropriate. He wanted to reassure her that the only lady in his heart was her, but it would not be believable following such revelations. “I know you do not wish to believe it, but despite her being the housekeeper, I do not see anything with her.” He sighed, shaking his head.

“How does you knowing her make it different? I would prefer to know the man who seems to be so close to you -- for all I know he has extremely poor intentions.” He sighed, shaking his head. “I am no fool, I know my poor judgements, but I don’t know what you wish from me.”

“ this is exactly why i do not go to you for any advice or help or even to talk , ” the red head shook her head slightly . “ i had said ’ i am willing to bet the pin money graham had given me that you are not listening to a word i have said ’ . ” arthur had seamlessly proven her point . “ i could have told you something far more scandalous and you would have not batted an eyelid . is this about miss fairchild again ? ”
