I swear to god, Matthew Perry can’t even breathe without half the Friends fandom psychoanalysing him like they’re trained professionals trying to diagnose his levels of sobriety. Like, I understand people are worried about him, and that a lot of these people only have good intentions. But honestly, some of the stuff I’ve read is just plain mean.
No matter what he’s doing, how he’s acting, where he is, you’ve always got someone commenting on every aspect of his demeanour. You’ve got people saying he sounds like he’s had brain damage, or people saying he looks sad and depressed. Even if he is, even if you’re right— don’t fucking go on to social media with your diagnosis because he’s on social media. You think he can’t see what people say? It’s not hard to miss when literally every time he shows his face people are asking if he’s okay, which is fine in itself, but not as an onslaught of indirect tweets picking apart everything he says and does.
And these are just the people who may have good intentions, whether they execute it well or not. Don’t even get me started on the assholes who have no damn empathy at all. People watching the reunion and wishing that Matthew would talk more about his addiction struggles. First of all, it is none of your business. Why should he be forced to talk about that if he doesn’t want to? Second of all, his addiction problems have been well-recorded for years, there are plenty of interviews where he opens up about it, article after article going into detail about the past twenty years. If you seriously want more than that then that’s your problem, and Matthew doesn’t owe you shit.
