Okay, yap sesh incoming because I need to get this off my chest:
No, it’s not because it’s a “walking sim” or “not a real game.” That argument has been beaten to death. Just ask anyone who plays visual novels.
It’s because it’s style over substance, tell don’t show, tryhard artsy circlejerk bullshit.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely pretty. I can give them props for how the game looks and the idea they were going for. But holy shit, there’s no other redeeming qualities.
The dialogue is so clunky and weirdly flowery for no reason. Nobody in real life talked/talks like this. If they did, you’d punch them in the face.
The characters are so flat, so one-dimensional, and SO UNLIKABLE.
Why should we be rooting for Cassandra to throw away her genuine talents so she can become a wannabe deviant and alcoholic at 17? Why would you WANT her to peak in high school like the other two fuckheads inevitably will?? At least become a burnout naturally instead of trying to force your coming of age story out of pettiness towards your dad.
Rockford is a pretentious, narcissistic asshole who bases her entire personality on music, being holier than thou because of her music, and drinking. What other personality traits does she have?? Because I must’ve had a stroke to miss something that fucking important!! There was multiple times in this game that I pulled one of these 🤦 and screamed “OH MY GOD. Shut the fuck up!” The fuck do you mean you hate Jenny just because she doesn’t listen to music the way YOU do??? You had NO REASON TO THROW A TANTRUM OVER CASSANDRA DARING TO HANG OUT WITH HER!!! She alluded to multiple reasons why she hates Jenny, SO WHY DON’T WE SEE OR HEAR IT??! With the amount of flashbacks and cutscenes we get in this game, I’d think we’d see just a LITTLE MORE CONTEXT?!! But I guess that budget went into the flashback section of Rockford and what’s-his-face tonguing each other in uncomfortable detail.
Slater is… Slater, I guess. I genuinely could not tell you a single thing about his personality other than “I like drinking and metal” even though we don’t EVER SEE OR HEAR HIM LISTENING TO METAL OR REFERENCING IT OUTSIDE OF JUST SAYING “THIS IS METAL.” It feels like they took the “token girl” character stereotype and genderbent it. Because as obnoxious as the girls are, I can at least tell you more about them as people with the information given to us by the game. Yknow, like how main characters are supposed to be written???
The “antagonist” if I can even call him that, is Cassandra’s cop dad. Real original- It feels like they saw David from Life is Strange and tried to copy his character only without ANY OF THE FUCKING NUANCE. Yeah, the way he went about caring for his daughter isn’t helpful; Just commanding her to do what he says because he says so and not actively trying to get to the root of her issues. But HE KINDA HAS A POINT. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE TRYHARD, FART-SUCKING LOSERS!! THEY ARE NOT WORTH THROWING YOUR LIFE AWAY FOR. THROW IT AWAY ON YOUR OWN LIKE THE REST OF US.
And about the gameplay itself, I hate that there’s basically no stakes in flubbing up. No dialogue choices, bare minimum interaction, no puzzles, literally nothing that makes you use your brain. It’s just boils down to “Hold W and watch.” At that point, just make it a fucking movie. But even then, that wouldn’t salvage the story. Because it’s just boring.
Who is this game fucking for??? Am I missing something here???
I swear to god, the people here outside of the critics sucking this games dick so hard are just as boring and pretentious as the main characters.
I’m sorry. I just genuinely don’t get how you see ANYTHING deep, relatable, or meaningful in this crock of shit. I read a review saying that this game was so good, they cried while playing it.

Because I felt absolutely nothing but pain from start to finish. I’d have more fun sitting through a 3 hour wet fart compilation.
It sucks, because I didn’t go into Mixtape wanting to hate it. I really wanted and TRIED to enjoy it. The aesthetic and music were right up my ally. But… ugh… this game falls flat in every way outside of the art direction.
Just play Life is Strange. It’s basically what this game was trying to be and is all around more relatable, genuine, and enjoyable.
