“What are we even doing here?” I groaned, it was probably the hottest it’s been in a while and my feet were aching from walking but yet my boyfriend dragged me to a store so far from where we lived. “Babe, I told you already I need to get my sister a gift.” He answered, opening the door allowing me to go in first, I genuinely didn’t know why I had to be there.
“Sorry, are you okay?” The guy I had accidentally bumped into spoke up, making my attention gravitate towards him. He looked really familiar but I couldn’t pin where I knew him from. School? Work? I got lost in thought, not realizing that my boyfriend had already disappeared from my side. I couldnt get out of my head he looked so familiar, it was irritating me that I didn’t know where I knew him from.
I walk up next to my boyfriend, tapping my nails on the books on the shelf, still wondering. I walked away from him, trying to see if I could find the dude. I found him skimming through a book.“You look familiar.” I spoke up, making the guy perk his head up from the book. “Yeah?” He laughed. Our eyes met for a split second before he quickly looked back down. “Yeah.” I simply said, this time getting a good look at features. “I probably just have one of those faces.” He joked, chuckling at his own comment. “Yeah maybe he does.” Alex teased, but his face told a whole different story than his voice he was looking between the guy and I. I hadn’t noticed that he had walked up behind me.
“What?” I mouthed turning around to look at him, looking at him confused. He just shook his head walking away looking at the other stuff in the store. “I’m Y/n. What’s your name?” I asked hoping maybe that would give me some type of recognition of who he was. “Hollis.” He said still not looking up. “Hollis…” I repeated, hoping something would click into place. “Hm, I feel like I know you.” I said slightly above a whisper tilting my head whispering his name hoping it’ll come to me. “Nah.”He said, putting the book back on the shelf. “Are you sure we haven’t met before?” I asked him hoping he’ll answer my own question.
He shrugged, “Sorry for bumping into you.” He said, walking away. “Alex.” I said looking for my boyfriend. “What?” Alex asked, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Thought I lost you” I answered, shifting my eyes from the floor back to the tall guy walking out the door. “You think she’ll like this?” Alex handed me a book. “Yeah.” I responded, although he was out of sight all I could think about was his face. “Yeah no. Imma just give her money.” He said dragging me out of the store.
We were driving home, and his face was literally imprinted in my brain. “I swear I know him from somewhere.” I said looking over at Alex who stopped mumbling the lyrics of the song playing. “Seriously? You are here with your boyfriend and you are over here thinking about some bitchass dude? What the fuck?” He said turning the music up, I tried to lower it but he kept fighting me on it, we went back and forth before I screamed at him. “Alex!” I screamed, he flinched turning the music down. “What?” He asked, looking straight at the road.“I’m sorry if that came out sideways.” I apologized, not really knowing what I should say to fix the situation. “It came out the way you said it.” He said. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” I squinted my eyes at his failed attempt to make a point, I was now irritated. “You heard me.” He said turning the music back up. “Whatever bitch.” I whispered, leaning my head on the window.
Alex dropped me off at home, it was so awkward I couldn’t mutter anything besides a thank you, there was something more than just his jealousy in the air, we have already been arguing for days so it just added to the tension. I didn’t know he was going to get so worked up over a simple comment, but yet I could understand where he was coming from. Especially since the whole ride home all I could think about was the guy at the store, he felt nostalgic like I had shared my life with him before.
