The Athletic first reported last week that Angie and Chris Long of Palmer Square Capital were leading the group. Sources tell The Equalizer that they will be joined in the ownership group by former professional soccer player Brittany Matthews.

That would make Kansas City the first majority-woman-owned team to actively play in the NWSL; 2022 expansion team Angel City FC is also majority-woman-owned.

The relocation of the Royals franchise will bring an abrupt end to the NWSL’s time in Utah, a market which joined the league in late 2017 in reaction to the demise of two-time league champions FC Kansas City. Plans for the new Kansas City team call for home games to initially be played at T-Bones Stadium, a minor league baseball park adjacent to the Kansas Speedway and Children’s Mercy Park, before the construction of a new soccer stadium which could open as early as summer 2022.
