Pumpkin Spice TV

There are so many shows out there that have such a unique way of portraying a story in a way that makes the audience say, “Wow, I cannot believe they did that to me,” or “I didn’t see that coming…”  There are many different ways in which a television show can capture the attention of the audience, but the most important is the way a story is told and expressed through the television screen behind the camera. 

One television show in particular that I believe truly captures an audience immediately is The Affair. The Affair has been known to be told in sequences of “flashbacks” between the two main characters throughout each episode, Noah and Allison.  For example, within the first thirty-minutes of each episode, Noah’s story is told in a certain way that makes him appear to be the hero, or “good guy.”  Within these thirty-minutes, we are given an image of who he is and who Allison is, through his eyes.  As one continues watching the next thirty-minutes, Allison’s story is begun and through her eyes, we learn that maybe Noah’s story really isn’t what we the audience first perceived to be.  Unfortunately though, we as the audience can only assume what is true throughout the series.  What pushes the audience to watch this show is through the narration, we learn who these characters were and who they become as the story continues on throughout the series. With one story being narrated by two different people, audiences find interest in comparing and coming up with their own story.

If you think you love Netflix, and other online streaming sites now just wait until you get to college. 

College is a big time commitment for me, I have classes, clubs and work all day. I get pretty tired and fried from doing all that I do. Today, for example I have a lot of homework to do, classes all day, a birthday party to go to, and a quiz to study for. It can be a lot, and at night I really like to vege out and put on a show or podcast. Here are some of my favorite shows and podcasts that I have been following that get me through the day. I already know all the classics, The Office, Parks and Rec and Criminal Minds. 

Serial 

This podcast is my favorite thing to listen to when I am doing homework. The series goes over stories of murders, which are very upsetting but interesting. It goes over the entire course of the trial.  It is really creepy, but also fascinating. I personally am very fascinated by True Crime, but it also freaks me out a little. It is perfect to do work to because it gives you something to listen to, but the work you can do as you listen to it helps distract you from how scary the podcasts can be.  

Atypical 

I began watching this show recently, and love it. Atypical is a comedy about a boy named Sam who lives with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Sam goes through things in life such as wanting a girlfriend or to go to college in a different way neurotypical people do. It is interesting and fun to watch, I find it shows a side to IDDs (Intellectual Developmental Disorders) in a way that should be more exposed, they are people just like you and me who live life a little different.  The show does a good job at explaining the family dynamic and thought process of someone who lives with this. As a member of Best Buddies, I find this to be important for all to watch and to see how funny, smart and cool Sam is. 

Turn: Washington’s Spies 

As a history nerd, this is naturally a perfect show for me. The show is focused on a part of American history that not many people are exposed to, George Washington’s Spies. It is very interesting to see how the spy ring works, and the show is of course also filled with drama and romance. I love it. This show is the perfect way to relax while learning. Also, who doesn’t love The Revolutionary War and George? 

The Mindy Project 

Written and produced Mindy Kaling of The Office, a story of a successful Indian Doctor, with many hilarious twists and turns. Another comedy with a lot of hilarious out-of-the-office moments. Definitely a great way to laugh off a busy day! 

The End of the F World 

A dark romance, Netflix original. This dark comedy is about a young couple who runs away from home, and ends up tied up in a murder case. I love the story and the dynamic of the two main characters. I watched in three times, and can’t wait for the next season to come out. 

American Horror Story 

This show has ups and downs, I really only recommend “Murder House”, “Coven” and “Roanoke”. This show is terrifying, so only watch it if you are a horror fan. It is very interesting and fun to watch, Murder House is my favorite season. It is so well written, and the emotions you feel while watching it are intense. 

I know I have a very mixed list, but I tried to find things to appeal to all. All of these are great choices, perfect for college boredom.
