Brookings City Council will take steps to Improve Community
The city council will hold a meeting on Tuesday, December 8 to vote on many issues, including a 10-year plan dubbed as the “Community Re-Investment Plan.” One of the largest issues that will be voted on is the expansion to the Performing Arts Center.
The PAC is looking at a $6 million upgrade from the City of Brookings. City Manager Jeff Weldon says that SDSU and Brookings are linked in a very special way and that partnership is huge.
Mayor Tim Reed says that there is huge economic benefit for SDSU, Brookings community members, and visitors alike. The events that are held at the PAC generate economic development for the community, while the shows held there are part of the amenities Brookings can offer to visitors. Although some might see the PAC as competition to the Swiftel Center, Weldon says there is nothing to worry about.
“The PAC is used as a venue for pure musical experience, while the Swiftel Center is more of a multipurpose venue. There may be some competition, but not much,” Weldon said in a small conference on Thursday.
If the decision to fund the PAC passes it will come along with some other community improvements.
Brookings will receive an Indoor Recreation Center as part of the Community Re-Investment Project. This Rec Center will come in three phases eventually harboring an indoor soccer, football, softball, and baseball fields as well as tennis, handball, and racquetball courts. The facility would be funded by the 2nd penny tax or a property tax opt-out. This will be the next biggest decision at the December 8 meeting.
The last part of the Community Re-Investment plan would include funds for items that are not as flashy. Roads, water, and sewer improvements would be made to balance the upgrade to the PAC and groundbreaking for the Rec Center. Other improvements will be made on the bike trails and $5 million will be allocated for Swiftel improvements and upkeep as well.
The biggest opposition to the 10-year plan comes from the fear of competition between amenities in Brookings already. Some believe that the Indoor Rec Center would take away from the SDSU Wellness Center. Reed says that the Rec Center is a project that the community members asked for. The Rec Center would not compete with the Wellness Center because the Rec Center would not have exercise equipment, and it would open opportunities for high school and community sports.
“I really believe that the Indoor Rec Center would do a goo job of filling a void in Brookings,” Weldon said.
The PAC is also an important part of the Brookings Community. Families and students in the community are interested in the arts. Supporting the PAC would support the University, further harboring that special bond between the city and SDSU.
The Brookings City Council would like to break ground in the summer of 2017 following the city election in April.
The Brookings City Council will hold it’s next meeting on Tuesday, December 8 at 6:oo p.m. in the Brookings City & County Government Building. All community members are invited to attend.
