One of the aspects that makes RGU so interesting is how complicated all the relationships between the characters are. So much different layers and hard to categorize somehow simply. For example Tokiko and Nemuro is actually really complicated. I think several things (that might sound incompatible) can be simultaneously true
Tokiko was a meaningful person to Nemuro and there were lot of positive and even beautiful aspects between them
Some of Tokiko's actions had harmful consequences to Nemuro
Some of Tokiko's behavior towards him can be viewed as manipulative
Tokiko did not tried intentionally manipulate him or otherwise be malicious
In Akio's plans, Tokiko had a certain role and was supposed to manipulate/groom Nemuro into certain situation
Tokiko was herself unaware of Akio's plans
Tokiko had positive influence on Nemuro
Tokiko had negative influence on Nemuro
Nemuro idolized Tokiko greatly
Nemuro (specifically later as Mikage) saw Tokiko as a competitor or traitor who must be beated
We actually know very little of Chida siblings in general because we only see them through somewhat tampered memories
In general, sometimes things just go wrong, even if no one had intended it. One of the tragedies of Nemuro & Tokiko & Mamiya is how it eventually ended to such catastrophe. It is not so that a good enough relationship can somehow "cure" a person or something like that. Like oh, now you machine boy suddenly learn how to be human. Sometimes mere trying ends up hurting more. Sometimes just fail.
Anthy looks upon the planetarium because she must distract herself from looking at the reality of the relationship she has with her brother, which is sexually abusive and will be sexually abusive for its foreseeable future. Anthy looks at the planetarium because it is the lie her brother has made about their relationship, that it's one of love and commitment when it is not. It is one of possession.
To look at the actual night sky with all of its stars is to be faced with the fact that her brother, someone she loves deeply, has raped her, and will still rape her unless she gets away from him. To look at the actual night sky would be to also acknowledge her brother's rape of her other classmates as well, something she ignores and has to in order to not break away from the comfort the lie brings to her.
To look at the actual night sky is to acknowledge that her closest friend, Utena, has started being raped by her brother as well, with the knowledge she cannot stop this act from happening.

i really think akiochan was indeed responding to utena in the ryokan scenes from episode 33 (even if it might have been small one liners), but the volume has been turned down; we aren’t privy to his responses
SAITOU Chiho (さいとうちほ ) and Be-Papas (ビーパパス ), La fillette révolutionnaire Utena/Shoujo Kakumei Utena /少女革命ウテナ
i wanna read or write something about utena genuinely attempting to give akio some sort of grace (NOT the same as like brushing his actions under the rug. yknow what i mean), and it makes akio realize the implications of his anger at anthy coming from being pissed that she didn’t let him die
the description of the rgu ptolemaea amv states that the op doesnt ship utena x akio. but i am not so cowardly.
[I.D.: digital fan art of akio, utena, and anthy from revolutionary girl utena, set against a background of roses with a spotlight shining on them from above. utena is in the very center, holding the sword of dios. on her left and slightly in front of her is akio, and to her right and slightly behind her is anthy. akio has a hand on utena’s chest, and is leaning in to kiss her with his eyes closed. utena’s mouth is wide open and so are her eyes, looking forward to the camera and slightly to the right, toward anthy. anthy has her eyes closed with a sad, weary expression. her arm goes under utena’s arm and grips the sword right before the tip. the other arm firmly holds utena’s other wrist, and head rests against utena’s shoulder. / end I.D.]
happy pride heres an utena based on that one anne hathaway image

reverse nanamiegg situation where akio wakes up with a handful of newborn puppies in his bed, and while he does decide to take them in, he comes to the more sane conclusion that someone else probably put them there. the only problem is that for some fucking reason, his fellow staff are convinced he gave birth to the puppies even though he didn’t feed into any kind of beliefs like that. even utena starts entertaining the possibility when akio offhandedly mentions it when she comes to visit. worse still, he starts getting plagued by visions of puppies multiplying and surrounding his tower, trapping him as he fears getting crushed to death by an avalanche of puppies
the one “rgu’s art style doesn’t literally represent the characters accurately and they might look completely different” headcanon i unironically love (and probably am the first person to come up with) is akio actually looking (and being?) far younger than what he likes to present himself as. those sleeve garters and ridiculously high-waist pants that emphasize his legs to make them look longer are there for a reason. ditto for him growing his hair out to show that he’s lived for a longer time than the student body, kinda like kaos from comic girls. i genuinely think that in reality, he didn’t physically stop being dios and he still looks and sounds like that but with longer hair and different outfit and probably hasnt even grown pubic hair at all. he just uses the projector to mess with everyone’s perception of him
pls. it’s the one thing i have left
[higurashi tatarigoroshi] when i see keiichi trying to avoid talking to ooishi without telling him directly that he doesnt want to talk, and not really knowing why he’s so scared of and repulsed by ooishi, i cant help but be reminded of episode 33 (utena being raped by akio, even if she doesnt really know why she’s so traumatized by it and assuming it was because of the food or something)
Akio did not cause every bad thing that happens in RGU, in fact, Akio is in many ways a reaction to bad things that happen in RGU. Akio did not make Anthy the Rose Bride. Akio does not control the Swords of Hate, and he did not force them on Anthy in the first place. all of this is clear from how the characters and their backstory are depicted.
Ikuhara talks about Akio's dilemma being all about power. do you stay perfect and powerless, or do you embrace power and thus become corrupt? if we read Akio's warped personality as largely being a maladaptation to what happened to Anthy, this makes sense. in the aftermath of her trauma, Akio was left with two main facts: he didn't know how to help her, and it was his weakness that put her in that position. the narration says that Anthy was the "only person in the world" who truly loved the prince. so Akio, Dios, the prince who's supposed to save all the girls in the world, failed to save the one girl who he should have done the most to protect.
the prince Dios died when Anthy became the Rose Bride. this is outright stated by Akio in episode 38. it was only ever her love for him, her earnest belief in him, that made him a prince at all. without her, he doesn't know what to do. I think he probably tried to find a way to save her despite not being able to be her prince. I think that's why he started the dueling games. I think that's how they ended up where they did.
I'm not writing this to do apologetics for Akio. he did fail as a human being. I don't think it was actually impossible for him to help Anthy. Utena was right to call him out. his main failings as depicted in the series are his self-centeredness, complacency, closed-mindedness, fear, and unwillingness to suffer. he is a very perverse character. he fell in love with torturing Anthy, himself, and everyone in their sphere. he chased power for its own sake while claiming to have good intentions. he enjoyed spinning narratives about how he was really the victim. all this we know. but I don't believe he set out to end up the way he did. it happened over time, due to his weaknesses. he became so utterly despicable that there really was nothing to do with him but kick him to the curb. but he didn't start out that way. he was beautiful once. if you want to be able to understand Utena, Anthy, or really RGU itself, you need to understand that.
Your posts about akio being suicidal bc of what happened to anthy and dios when they were kids made me look at his and anthy's relationship in the way i never saw before. It also recontextualizes his lines in ep 38/9 about "anthy making him suffer" to me. I'll admit that i was looking at his character in kind of shallow way before but thanks to your posts i've come to appreciate him as character more (he's still awful but really interesting)
@capturedbystars suicidal akiochan and utena make me crazy because i don’t see it talked about enough?? it’s kinda textual with the episode 9 flashback, utena staking her right to live on other people’s opinions imo, and akio’s straight-up venting in episode 38-39.
akio is relatively privileged compared to the kids he abuses but the final things he says to utena about how he felt both of their original worldviews just weren’t compatible with the real world made me feel shrimp emotions and whisper “oh my god” when i thought about the implications of that for too long.
and it kept going with how utena yells at him to shut up and her initial idealism to help a friend is proven right where dios wasn’t. anthy, who he thought was fundamentally impossible to help, walks out. everyone, even the boys, are on the fast track to happiness and its many endpoints. they are already feeling happiness. even mikage’s being forced out was similarly incredibly lucky for him in the long run, mamiya can’t suffer anymore either (i am partial to the concept of reincarnation), tokiko already has something somewhat approaching maturity and she’s fairly unimpressed with akio and genuinely sorry for how she treated mikage and mamiya…
it’s so important to and resonant with me that akio cannot percieve that. it still feels like i’m looking in a mirror. i can posit and understand the underlying concern that what if you’re still the unlucky exception, and how everything positive can be twisted to accomodate that notion in a way that is very hard to let go of. akio’s doomed state hits me in a completely different way from all the other characters because it’s a horrifying feedback loop that he blocks everyone from really percieving in a non-destructive/radioactive way. no one can step up to this task. the children will melt alive if they took it upon themselves. i doubt the other staff can prohibit themselves from enabling him. akio ohtori is the personification of rabies. his only happy ending is in the film and after the revolution.
imagine if akio also had a divorced boyfriend who he never actually dated

sorry if this sounds mean but i feel like the kids who akio raped are analogous to different sides of the kaleidoscope that akiochan is. both he and touga have a really specific powerful image they want to be (and the kiryuu siblings indicate one possible direction the himemiya siblings’ past went), utena is frequently compared to The Prince by numerous characters for different reasons, imo kozue also seems to come fairly close to what being Dios As A Human was actually like, and anthy is the person akio is afraid of becoming(/going back to being?)
i think realistically if spongebob tried to adopt the baby 34 himemiya siblings (just assume they have magical air helmets), he’d probably be similar to early utena in that he really does Care but he’s naive and isn’t actually sure what they want/need. though i believe anthy would warm up to most bottomites faster than you’d think since bikini bottom is 99.08% nonhuman animals, dios could very well be a different story. spongebob x akio toxic doomed (pseudo?)incestuous-from-adoption yaoi when
