Sylus's introduction in the main story makes perfect sense now. He wasn't just angry and annoyed, he was so desperate.
"It's a shame your evol has deteriorated into its current state"
In every lifetime Sylus knows Mc to be the all powerful sorceress. He's impatient to see that side again.
He even repeats the same thing Mc continuously tells him in the 3rd myth, "After all you and I we're the same, true kindred spirits."
I'm convinced him trying to 'resonate' with MC was actually just a desperate attempt to find the linkage again. The linkage was the manifestation of their curse, proof that they were two souls intertwined. It had surfaced in every timeline, it had to be there.
He absolutely made MC shoot him so that the scene would feel familiar, maybe invoke a distant memory of another lifetime. (THEY ARE SO COUNT DRACULA AND ELIZABETTA CODED HELP ME LORD)
We don't understand just how profound his shock would have been when he was told MC was rejecting him on a soul level,
"-either rejecting you, scared of you, or disgusted by you."
The words must have destroyed him.

summary β After getting rejected by your college crush back in freshman year, you swore off datingβwhy bother when it clearly wasnβt meant for you? Years later, thanks to a well-meaning setup by your friends, you find yourself on a blind dateβ¦ only to come face-to-face with him again. Totally not awkwardβuntil he suggests something that makes it even worse. Orβ¦ maybe not?
pairings β excrush!sylus x fem!reader
content/tagsβ fluff, angst if you squint REALLY hard, blind dates, reader is traumatized, classic 10 dates trope, tara and her bf is their cupid, timeskips, kissing, SFW, second chance romance + more!

β
βOne caramel macchiato!β
The barista calls out your name, drawing your attention from the glow of your laptop screen for the first time since you sat down. You rise, stretching slightly as you make your way to the counter. She greets you with a warm smile, and you return it with a quiet one of your own before taking your coffee and slipping back into your seat.
After a few moments, the front door swings open with a soft chime, letting in a brief gust of warm air and the unmistakable voice of your co-worker.
βHey!β Tara calls out, already grinning as she spots you.
You lift your head from your coffee with the energy of a drained phone battery, offering her a weak wave. She's radiant, as usualβlike someone who actually slept last night and didnβt just survive on caffeine and deadlines.
She slides into the seat across from you without waiting for an invitation, eyes practically sparkling. That look. You know that look. You brace yourself.
βSo,β she begins, drawing the word out like a plot twist. βYou remember Ethan from accounting? Super cute, like βbakes-his-own-breadβ cute? Wellββ
You groan softly, slumping forward until your forehead nearly kisses the table.
βTara, Iβm running on four hours of sleep and two existential crises. Please donβt set me up with someone who makes sourdough starters for fun.β
She just laughs, undeterred. βThatβs exactly why you need someone! Balance, babe.β
You sip your coffee like itβs the only thing keeping you tethered to the mortal world.
βIβve been single for almost my whole life, and Iβm planning to be until I reach 35,β you reply flatly, sipping your coffee like itβs a shield.
Taraβs smile falters into a small frown, her brows knitting together. βThirty-five? Thatβs soβ¦ specific. Why 35?β
βBecause by then Iβll either have my life together,β you say, waving vaguely at your open laptop, βor Iβll be so far gone into the abyss of burnout that no one will want to date me anyway.β
She gasps like you just said you donβt believe in love or oat milk.
βThat is the most depressing thing Iβve heard all week. And I sat through a budget meeting yesterday.β
You lift a brow. βAnd yet, youβre still trying to play Cupid.β
βExactly!β She sits up straighter, suddenly energized. βWhich is why you need someone before you become a recluse who hisses at the sunlight and lives off instant noodles.β
You squint at her over your mug. βThat sounds like a dream, actually.β
βOh my god,β she mutters, but sheβs laughing. βYou are impossible.β
βAnd yet, you keep trying.β
βBecause I believe in love. And also because youβre too pretty to be left to your own self-sabotaging devices.β
You groan again and slump further into your seat.
ββItβs Evanβs request!β she pouts, her lower lip jutting out like a child denied dessert.
You groan instantly at the mention of her beloved boyfriend. Of course. Of course sheβd do anything for him. Ride or dieβfor his romantic fantasies involving you and some stranger.
βWho is it this time?β you deadpan. βA cousin? Colleague?β You narrow your eyes. βAnd before you say itβIβve had enough of his friends. Theyβre all terrible on their first dates.β
You sigh and rest your cheek in your palm, memories flashing like a highlight reel of awkward handshakes, painfully long silences, and one guy who brought his rΓ©sumΓ© to dinner βjust in case.β
Tara winces a little but pushes on like the soldier of love she is. βItβs his old college coursemate!β she insists, leaning forward dramatically.
βThat means nothing to me.β
βHeβs actually nice!β she protests. βEvan swears heβs not like the others.β
βYou said that about the one who only talked about cryptocurrency.β
βOkay, that was a dark time. But this guyβs different. He reads books! He collects vinyls!β
You arch a tired brow. βSo heβs a passionate adult. The bar is so low, Tara.β
She grins, undeterred. βJust one date?β
βI have deadlines.β You look at the report you have to finish before your meeting tomorrow morning before your boss starts to passive-agressively call you out, again.
βItβs coffee.β
βI already have coffee.β You lift your mug in emphasis.
βItβs free coffee, and he might be hot.β
You hesitate.
She sees it.
Victory blooms on her face like sunshine after rain.
βFine, this is the last time.β You mutter, in which Tara smiles. βYay! I really think this time itβs gonna be the one for you! Iβve seen his face and Evan told me things about him. Heβs also veryβ¦β She made the classic money gestureβrubbing her thumb against her fingersβwhile grinning. βCha-ching.β
You groaned harder at that. Fine, one last try.
By the time you finally cave and go on the dateβmostly out of guilt, slight curiosity, and Taraβs relentless textingβyouβre already bracing for disappointment. But nothing could have prepared you for this.
Because sitting across the table, casually sipping his drink like he didnβt just shatter your soul five years ago, is none other than your college crush from freshman year. The same guy youβd nursed a hopeless, head-over-heels attraction for. The same one youβd confessed to in a moment of naive braveryβand the same one who turned you down with that polite, almost apologetic smile that still haunts your occasional 3 a.m. spiral.
You stare at him, and he looks up with a pleasant smile, clearly having no idea who you are.
And thatβs the moment it hits you.
Maybe love really isnβt for you. Maybe the universe is playing a long, humiliating game of romantic dodgeball, and you just got hit square in the faceβagain.
You force a smile, heart sinking into your gut as you stir your drink just to have something to do with your hands.
βSoβ¦β he says, leaning in slightly, βhave we met before? You look kind of familiar.β
You laugh, but thereβs no humor in it.
βSylus Qin.β He offers you a handshake, his voice calm, smoothβlike it hasn't shattered your ego once before.
You blink at him. The name confirms it, not that you needed it. You wouldβve recognized that voice anywhere. The same one that used to echo down lecture halls and occasionally star in your daydreams back when love felt like something soft and full of promise.
Your hand hovers for a second too long before you take his. His grip is firm, warm. Too familiar.
He doesnβt flinch. Doesnβt blink. Just looks at you like youβre a stranger with slightly interesting eyes.
βRight,β you say, clearing your throat and slipping your hand back like it burned. βNice to meet youβ¦ again.β
A small crease forms between his brows. βMind reminding me where we met, Miss?β
Your smile tightens. βFreshman year. Psych class. I was the idiot who met you at the campus entrance and confessed and gave you a letter?β
His face stills. Then slowlyβtoo slowlyβhis eyes widen with dawning recognition. βOh.β
βYeah,β you say, sipping your drink and praying for the floor to open up beneath you. βThat girl.β
He opens his mouth to say somethingβmaybe an apology, maybe nothingβbut you cut in before he can gather a sentence.
βBut donβt worry,β you add lightly, voice wrapped in practiced indifference. βIβm not here for a second chance. I was tricked into this by a mutual friend. Apparently Evan thinks weβd be great together.β
Sylus leans back, still watching you. βSoβ¦ this is a blind date?β
βUnfortunately.β
He hums, gaze flicking over you with a hint of something unreadable. βGuess he forgot to mention the history.β
You raise an eyebrow. βGuess he didnβt know anything. It was a one second thing anywayβ
The silence stretchesβbut itβs not exactly awkward. Just loaded.
And part of you already knows: this night is not going to go the way you expected.
And suddenly, you become extra conscious of what youβre wearing.
The blouse youβd thrown on in a rush this morning suddenly feels too casual, too slouchy. Your jeans, just slightly faded at the knees. Your hairβwas it frizzy? Was there coffee foam on your lip?
Of all the days to run on autopilot.
You shift in your seat, subtly tugging at your sleeves like thatβll magically sharpen your entire look. But itβs too late. Heβs already seen you. Really seen you.
Sylus watches you with a calm expression, but there's something unreadable in his eyes nowβlike he's reassessing, recalibrating. You donβt know whether itβs a good thing or a bad thing. And you hate that it matters. But it does.
Because no matter how long itβs been, or how hard you tried to file him away as a βlearning experience,β some tiny, ridiculous part of you still wants to beβ¦ enough.
Still wants to make him regret saying no back then.
You force yourself to sit up straighter, chin tilted, like youβre fine. Like your heart isnβt doing little nervous pirouettes.
βAnyway,β you say, breaking the silence with a half-laugh, βhow ironic is this?β
He quirks a brow. βIronic?β
βFate clearly has a sense of humor.β
Sylusβs lips curl into a faint smile. βMaybe. Or maybe fateβs giving me a second chance to get it right.β
Your breath catchesβjust slightly. You tell yourself not to read into it.
But itβs too late for that, too.
βUhm, moving on,β you say quickly, trying to shove the tension back into its box. You tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear, eyes fixed on the condensation forming on your glass. βWhat do you do now?β
Sylus leans back slightly, giving you a moment of reprieve from his steady gaze.
βIβm a software engineer,β he says, casually swirling his drink. βI mostly do freelance contract work. Apps, platforms, tech solutions for startupsβyou know, the usual keyboard warrior stuff.β
You nod, impressed despite yourself. βSo youβre the guy everyone calls when their website crashes at 2 a.m.β
He chuckles softly. βSomething like that. Less dramatic, more debugging-induced migraines.β
His laugh still sounds like it did years agoβlow, easy, the kind that used to make you turn your head without meaning to.
You resist the urge to sigh.
βAnd you?β he asks, leaning in a little. βWhat did you end up doing?β
You shrug. βMarketing. Mostly brand copy and strategy. I sit in a lot of Zoom meetings, say βcircle backβ more than Iβd like, and write things that sound exciting but mean almost nothing.β
He grins. βAh, professional illusionist. Respect.β
You huff a laugh. βExactly.β
For a moment, thereβs quietβnot awkward, justβ¦ contemplative. A shared pause between two people who were once on completely different pages, now reading from the same one without meaning to.
And though youβre still wary, still guarded, thereβs a small flicker of something unspoken between you. Maybe.
You push it aside. For now.
You clear your throat, trying to push through the lingering weirdness. βSoβ¦ youβre still based around here?β
βMhm,β Sylus nods, taking a slow sip of his drink. βMoved back about a year ago. Needed a change of scenery. Or maybe I was subconsciously following a ghost from freshman year.β
Your eyes widen slightly, and you stare at him over the rim of your glass.
βRelax,β he says with a lazy grin. βJoking.β
βRight,β you mutter, cheeks warming. βObviously.β
He leans forward on his elbows, resting his chin lightly on one hand. βYou always get this flustered, or is it just me?β
Your mouth opens, then closes. βI am not flustered.β
βYouβre stirring an empty cup,β he points out, amusement glittering in his eyes.
You glance downβand sure enough, youβre absentmindedly swirling your straw in a drink thatβs been gone for five minutes.
You set it down a little too quickly. βItβs a nervous habit.β
βCute one,β he murmurs.
You glare. βDo you always do this?β
βDo what?β
βTease people on blind dates?β
βOnly the ones I rejected five years ago and then ran into completely by accident,β he says, smile widening. βItβs a rare demographic.β
You groan and drop your face into your hands for a second. βThis is so weird.β
βMaybe,β he says. βBut itβs not terrible.β
You peek at him between your fingers. βYou think this is going well?β
βI mean, youβre adorable when youβre awkward,β he says without missing a beat. βAnd I donβt not want to be here.β
You blink. Thatβsβ¦ not what you expected.
Sylus shrugs like itβs no big deal. βHonestly? I think itβs kind of poetic. Terrible timing back then. Maybe this time the timingβs justβ¦ less terrible.β
You donβt know what to say to that. Youβre still mentally stuck on βadorable.β
So instead, you reach for your glass againβforgetting itβs empty.
He laughs.
You roll your eyes. βIβm never hearing the end of this, am I?β
βNope,β he says, lifting his drink in a small toast. βBut I am buying your next one.β
And despite yourself, despite everythingβyour lips twitch into a smile.
βWhat about dinner?β he suggests, casually, like itβs the most natural thing in the world.
You stare at him. βWeβreβ¦ dragging this date?β
Sylus lifts an eyebrow, amused. βDragging? Thatβs a strong word. I was thinking about extending.β
You squint at him suspiciously. βYou sure this isnβt a social experiment? See how long you can tolerate the girl who confessed to you in college?β
He grins. βYou keep bringing that up like Iβm not flattered.β
You scoff. βYou rejected me.β
βRegretfully,β he says, placing a hand over his chest with exaggerated sincerity. βI was young. Emotionally unavailable. Spiritually lost.β
You deadpan. βYou were nineteen and dating a girl who made jewelry out of spoons.β
βAh, Simone,β he says with a nostalgic sigh. βShe had a vision.β
βShe made you wear a fork necklace for a month.β
He laughs, and you hate that it sounds so nice. Like warm sunlight through a cafΓ© window. Dangerous. βYou know a lot about me, huh?β
βKnew. I literally had a crush on you.β
You glance at your watch. You could go home. Eat leftovers. Watch a true crime doc youβll forget by morning. Orβ¦
You exhale. βFine. Dinner.β
He blinks. βThat easy?β You didnβt reply when you stood up and he immediately followed you out.
The restaurant Sylus brings you to is tucked away on a quieter streetβa cozy, dimly lit place with mismatched chairs and old jazz humming from a record player in the corner. Not fancy, but warm. Intentional.
βThis feelsβ¦ not like a first date spot,β you say as he pulls out a chair for you.
βThatβs because it isnβt,β he replies, sliding into the seat across from you. βItβs a make-up-for-my-past-mistakes spot.β
You squint at him as you open the menu. βDo you have a designated restaurant for your emotional failures?β
βOnly the meaningful ones.β
You snort. βSo you bring a lot of people here.β
He winks. βJust you, actually.β
Your cheeks flush againβgreatβand you pretend to focus very hard on the pasta section. He watches you, though, openly and without shame, chin resting on his hand like heβs perfectly content just sitting across from you.
The waiter comes, and you place your orders. After he walks off, the silence between you settles againβbut this time, itβs quieter. Softer.
βSoβ¦β you say, twirling the condensation on your glass, βyou really didnβt remember me when you saw me at first?β
Sylus winces. βI remembered your face. Justβ¦ didnβt connect it right away.β You gave him a knowing look, in which he sighs.
"Fine, I knew it was you ever since I entered that cafe."
βHm.β
βBut when you brought up the confession and letter?β He taps the table lightly. βIt all came back like it was yesterday. I even remember the pen colorβdark green ink, right?β
Your eyes widen. βOkay, weird.β
βYou wrote in cursive,β he continues, grinning. βAll neat and swirly. I thought it was sweet.β
βAnd you read it after rejecting me?,β you asked him, stabbing a breadstick like it personally offended you.
He chuckles. βHey, in my defenseβI was an idiot. The kind who didnβt know what he wanted until years later.β
βYeah, well,β you say, biting into the breadstick, βwelcome to the club.β
Your food arrives midway through him telling a story about a client who paid him in garden vegetables. Youβre genuinely laughing nowβsoft and a little surprised, like you forgot what it felt like to enjoy someoneβs company this way.
Over dinner, the teasing doesnβt stop, but it shiftsβless sharp, more playful. He leans in sometimes when you speak, nods like what you're saying matters. And every so often, he looks at you like maybe this was never just a coincidence.
When dessert comes, he casually pushes the plate of tiramisu toward you with a fork already ready.
βI didnβt order dessert,β you protest.
βYou did,β he says, βyou just didnβt know it yet.β
βYouβre unbelievable.β
βYet, here you are.β
You roll your eyes, but you do take a bite.
Itβs unfairly good.
β...Damn it.β
βExactly.β He smiles, slow and warm. βSo... what do you say we drag this date a little longer?β
You stare at him, fork paused halfway to your mouth.
Then it hits you.
You canβt.
Not like this. Not with someone who clearly rejected you once, and maybeβjust maybeβis only entertaining this out of guilt or curiosity. The warmth in his eyes, the way he leans in, the softness in his smile... it all feels too good, too dangerous.
And you've read some post on tiktok saying if a man rejected you once they shouldn't be in your life ever again. Even though you never really follow social media's advices, you're still unsure.
Because you remember exactly what it felt like to have hope, only to have it shut down with a kind smile and a polite βIβm sorry.β
And no matter how nice dinner is, no matter how different he seems nowβyouβre still you. And heβs still Sylus Qin.
The boy who took your letter and probably never really read the insides rather than a glance, and threw it out (That is what your dramatic heart convinced you happened)
You put the fork down slowly, like it's suddenly too heavy. βI canβt do this,β you murmur, your voice quieter than you mean it to be.
Sylus straightens slightly. βWhat?β
βThis.β You gesture vaguely between you two. βDinner. The... date. Whatever this is.β
His brows draw together. βDid I say something wrong?β
You shake your head, looking down at the half-eaten tiramisu like it holds answers. βNo. You wereβyou are fine. And thatβs the problem.β
He blinks, clearly confused. βYou lost me.β
You take a slow breath. βYou donβt remember how that felt, do you? Being rejected by someone you genuinely likedβsomeone who barely noticed you until years later. Someone who now decides, over pasta and charming smiles, that maybe you're worth a shot.β
Sylus is quiet for a moment, no longer smiling.
βYou think thatβs why Iβm here?β he asks, voice low.
You shrug, arms folding tightly across your chest. βI donβt know why youβre here. And thatβs the part I donβt think I can handle.β
Thereβs a pause between youβlong and sharp.
βI didnβt come here to mess with you,β he says, tone more serious now. βI didnβt remember right away, but once I did, I chose to stay. Iβm not trying to make up for the past. I just... thought this could be something new.β
You look up at him, uncertain.
βI get it,β he adds gently. βIf you donβt want to keep going, I wonβt push. But Iβm not that guy from freshman year anymore. And maybe youβre not that girl either.β
You hesitate, heart torn between a self-defense mechanism youβve polished to perfectionβand the stupid, stubborn flicker of curiosity he somehow reignited.
You glance down again, then quietly push the dessert plate back to him.
βI think Iβm still her...and uhm, I need a little space,β you say.
He nods slowly. βOkay.β
The server returns with the check, and Sylus pays without question waving in dismissal at your attempt to sneak in your card as well. You both rise, the air between you heavier now, but honest.
He walks you to the door, hands in his pockets. βFor what itβs worth,β he says softly, βIβm glad I saw you again.β
You manage a small nod, already halfway out the door, already fighting the part of you that wants to turn back.
Maybe later.
Maybe next time.
Maybe.
One month later
The coffee shopβs the same.
Same mellow jazz humming from the speakers. Same barista who still gives you a warm smile and extra whipped cream when she thinks you look tired. Same seat by the window, where your laptop sits untouched, your fingers curled around a lukewarm mug of cappuccino.
But youβre not the same.
Not entirely.
Because ever since that dinnerβsince himβyou havenβt quite been able to return to your emotional baseline. Thereβs a small ache under your ribs when you let your guard down. A lingering sense of something unfinished.
Tara drops into the seat across from you, smoothie in one hand, far too much energy in the other.
βYouβre avoiding the question again,β she says, poking your arm with her straw.
You donβt look up. βWhat question?β
βThe Sylus Question."
βIβm not.β
βYou are.β
You sigh. βThereβs nothing to say.β
Tara leans in, unconvinced. βYou were gone for almost three hours. You came back looking like youβd seen a ghost and then refused to talk about it. Something happened.β
You stay quiet, eyes fixed on the steam curling from your drink. And for a while, she just watches youβnot pressing, for once.
Then quietly, you say, βI never told you about him, did I?β
She blinks. βTold me what?β
βSylus wasnβt just some random guy Evan picked out of a lineup. I knew him. From college.β
Her brows lift. βWaitβwhat?β
You nod slowly, not quite meeting her eyes. βFreshman year. I had the biggest crush on him. We had psych class together. I wrote him this ridiculous handwritten confession letter like I was living in some second-rate teen drama.β
Taraβs jaw drops. βYou wrote him a letter?β
βIn green ink,β you mutter. βCursive. I poured my heart out. He was nice about it. Rejected me politely. But still... it stuck with me.β
βOh my God,β she breathes. βAnd you, out of all people just proceed with the date?β
You finally look up, your expression tight. βBecause the moment he sat down and saw him smile like he didnβt even recognize me, it all came rushing back. I felt stupid. Like I was nineteen again, waiting for a reply that never came.β
Tara leans back slowly, eyes softer now. βYou never said any of that.β
βI didnβt want to make it a thing,β you murmur. βYou were so excited to help me. And I thought I could handle it. I didnβt know it would be him!Β But after the date... I donβt know. He was kind. Charming. All the things I used to like about him. And somehow that made it worse.β
She studies you for a long moment. βYou didnβt ask Evan for his number?β
You shake your head. βDidnβt want to. Didnβt dare to. Because what if he was only being nice to be nice? What if he was curious? Or worseβwhat if it meant nothing at all to him and I just end up falling again?β
Tara exhales slowly. βEvan said Sylus asked about you. He didnβt push. Just wondered if you were okay.β
Your heart gives a quiet, reluctant thud.
βI think youβre still thinking about someone you saw once a month ago,β she says gently. βThat kinda says everything.β
You fall silent, eyes drifting to the window where the light hits just right, shadowing the table in soft gold. You remember his smile. The way he looked at youβnot like he was sorry, but like he wanted to know you again. For real this time.
βDo you thinkβ¦β you start, then pause, swallowing. βDo you think I messed it up?β
Tara doesnβt even hesitate. She reaches for her phone and gives you a raised eyebrow. βShould I text Evan?β
You stare at the screen.
Maybe you should.
You stare at Taraβs phone like itβs a bomb sheβs about to detonate.
βWhat would you even say?β you ask, cautiously.
Tara shrugs, already typing. βSomething neutral. Friendly. Non-dramatic. βHey, can you send Sylusβs number to [Name]? She forgot to get it that night.ββ
βI didnβt forget.β
She glances up, grinning. βExactly. Thatβs why itβll sound innocent.β
You hesitate. Your fingers tighten around your cup.
Tara pauses, thumbs hovering. βDo you want me to hit send?β
Thereβs a pause. A long, uncertain one. But your silence is a maybe, and she knows you well enough to hear it.
Send.
βDone,β she says brightly, locking her phone like she didnβt just possibly alter the trajectory of your emotional well-being.
You groan and sink further into your seat. βYouβre evil.β
βIβm efficient,β she corrects. βAlso, youβre welcome.β
You donβt respond. Your mindβs already spinningβwhat youβll say, how itβll sound, what heβll think. If heβll even reply.
You donβt have to wait long.
Taraβs phone buzzes. She unlocks it, reads the message, then slides the phone across the table to you.
Evan: Yeah, sure. Heβs actually been meaning to reach out, but didnβt want to push. Hereβs his number. Hope sheβs doing okay.
You stare at the number for a few seconds, your heart weirdly loud in your chest.
βHe was going to reach out,β Tara says softly. βHe was waiting for you.β
You donβt say anything. You just copy the number into your own phone. Your thumb hovers over the message screen for way too long. You delete three different drafts before settling on the simplest version possible.
You: Hey. Itβs me. From that very extended blind date. Mind if we talk?
You hit send before you can overthink it.
Then you both wait.
A few agonizing minutes pass. You sip your now-cold coffee. Tara picks at her muffin like sheβs trying not to stare too obviously. You check your phone again. Nothing.
And thenβfinallyβyour screen lights up.
Sylus: Hey. Wow. Hi.
Sylus: I was hoping youβd text. Where should we startβapologies or second chances?
Your breath catches, somewhere between a laugh and a nervous sigh. You glance up at Tara, eyes wide.
She grins. βWell?β
You look back down at the screen, smile tugging at your lips before you can stop it.
You: Maybe⦠coffee. One cup. No letters. No expectations.
Sylus: One cup. No letters. Just you. When?
And this time, you donβt hesitate.
You: Tomorrow? Same cafΓ©, 4pm?
Sent.
You stare at the message, heart tapping against your ribs like itβs trying to make a run for it. Across from you, Taraβs holding her breath with a weirdly intense look.
βI asked him,β you murmur.
Taraβs hands shoot up in silent victory. βYes. Finally.β Then her voice drops, more sincere. βYou okay?β
You nodβsmall, uncertain. βI donβt know what I want from this.β
βThen start with what you donβt want,β she offers. βYou donβt want it to end with silence. Again.β
Your phone buzzes.
Sylus: Iβll be there. And I promise not to pretend weβre strangers this time.
Your lips twitch. You hate how fast your fingers move when you type back.
You: Good. Because Iβm done pretending too.
β
You sat at the coffee table, waitingβnervously fiddling with the rim of your cup as your eyes flicked toward the door every few seconds. The cafΓ© felt louder than usual, or maybe it was just your thoughts making too much noise.
What were you even doing here?
A month had passed. You shouldβve let it go. But something about the way heβd looked at you that nightβsurprised, yes, but not indifferentβkept looping in your head like an unfinished sentence.
Your fingers stilled.
The door chimed.
You didnβt turn right away, but you felt itβthe shift. The quiet recognition, the way the barista paused mid-sentence to smile, how a familiar set of footsteps approached the table.
βHey,β Sylus said.
You looked up.
He hadnβt changed, but something in his posture was different. Softer, maybe. Less guarded.
βHey,β you replied, quieter than intended.
He glanced at the cup in front of you. βDid you order for me again?β
You smirked. βHabit.β
βDangerous. I couldβve turned into someone who drinks oat milk lavender lattes.β
βThen weβd have a real problem.β
That made him laugh. And you hated how nice it still sounded.
He slid into the seat across from you, exhaling slowly like even he wasnβt sure what came next.
You both sat there for a moment, letting the silence settleβnot awkward, not entirely comfortable either. Just real.
βSo,β he started, eyes meeting yours, βare we pretending this is just coffee?β
You paused, then shook your head. βNo pretending this time.β
His gaze lingered. βGood. Because Iβve been thinking about you.β
You blinked. βWhy?β
He smiled faintly. βBecause maybe I was wrong about a lot of things back then. But mostly... because I donβt want to be wrong about you again.β
βWhat do you mean?β you ask, trying to keep your tone even, but you can already feel your chest tightening.
Sylus gives a small, breathy laugh and looks down at his hands. βI mean I havenβt been able to stop thinking about you. Since that night.β
Your eyebrows lift, skeptical. βWe barely talked.β
βThatβs the thing,β he says, meeting your gaze. βEven when you werenβt saying much, I could feel it. That weight between us. Like there was more. Like you knew something I didnβt.β
You donβt respond. Youβre not sure if you can. Because part of you wants to believe he means this, and another part still remembers the awkwardness of freshman yearβof your letter, of his rejection, of everything that made you feel small.
Sylus seems to sense it.
βI know I didnβt handle things well back then,β he says. βAnd I donβt expect us to magically reset, or rewind. I justβ¦ wanted a chance. A real one this time. No setups, no pressure, no expectations.β
A beat.
You bite the inside of your cheek. βYou know this is kind of insane, right?β
He smiles softly. βThe best things usually are.β
You stare at himβat his hopeful expression, at the way heβs sitting there with nothing but his words and his coffee and maybe.
You look away, jaw tightening. βIf we hadnβt gone on that blind date, none of this wouldβve happened.β
There's a pause. You expect him to deny it, to give some sweet romantic line about fate. But he doesnβt.
Instead, he says quietly, βYouβre right.β
You glance back at him, surprised by the honesty.
βIf we didnβt go on that blind date,β he continues, βwe probably wouldβve gone on living like strangers who once shared a college campus and a forgotten letter. But we did go. And I saw you again. And it... shifted something.β
You scoff under your breath. βYouβre making it sound like a movie.β
βYeah, well.β He gives a soft laugh. βI didnβt expect it either. I thought youβd be another awkward coffee and polite goodbye. But then you walked in and looked at me like you already knew who I wasβand I couldnβt stop wondering why.β
You stay silent, the edge in your expression softening, but only slightly.
βYouβre still mad,β he notes gently.
βIβm still trying to understand what this is,β you reply. βIf itβs just guilt. Nostalgia. Or something youβll forget in a week.β
Sylus leans back, eyes steady on yours.
βI donβt know what it is yet either,β he says honestly. βBut Iβd like to find out.β
You cross your arms, narrowing your eyes slightly. βAnd how exactly are you going to find out? Expect me to write you a letter again?β
Sylus smilesβnot smug, not overly confident. Just steady.
βWhile it doesnβt sound so bad to receive one from you again, I have another idea,β he says. βBut how about this: ten dates.β
You blink. βWhat?β
βTen dates,β he repeats. βMaybe romantic, but not dramatic. Justβ¦ ten chances. To talk. To laugh. To see if thisβwhatever this isβis real.β
You stare at him, incredulous. βThat sounds like a really desperate Netflix series.β
βYeah, well, desperate is fair,β he replies with a half-shrug. βYouβre kind of terrifying.β
That almost makes you laugh, but you suppress it. βWhy ten?β
βBecause Iβm stubborn,β he says, leaning forward just a little. βAnd because if I canβt convince you by the tenth, Iβll back off for good.β
You look down at your cup, pretending to think, though your heart is already pacing.
βThis is ridiculous,β you mutter.
βMaybe,β he agrees. βBut so is the fact that I still remember what you wore when you gave me that letter.β
Your head snaps up, and he grinsβcaught you off guard again.
You sigh, long and tired. βFine. But donβt expect me to be charming.β
He raises a brow. βSoβ¦ thatβs a yes?β
You pick up your drink and sip slowly. βItβs a maybe. A probationary date system. Conditional.β
Sylus holds up both hands in surrender. βIβll take it.β
β
The rain drums lightly against the windows as you sit across from Sylus, sipping a warm chai latte in one of your favorite hideaway spotsβa quiet bookstore cafΓ© tucked behind a florist and barely staffed. You picked it on purpose. Familiar. Safe. Low stakes.
Heβs dressed in a dark sweater and jeans, damp at the shoulders from the rain, hair slightly tousled like he ran a hand through it too many times on the way in. You hate that he still looks so... annoyingly good.
βYou chose the most intimidating first date spot,β he comments, glancing around at the towering bookshelves and soft jazz playing overhead. βIs this a test?β
You raise a brow. βYou said you wanted ten dates. Iβm making sure you work for them.β
He chuckles. βSo... trial by literature.β
βI heard you read a lot.β You reply as you look at him with a smile, in which he echoes.
βMaking some research on me, huh?β He grins.Β
βEvan.βΒ
βOh, that guy. Was he giving you some biodata check before going on that blind date?β
βJust simple things like what you like, the fact that you collect vinyls amongst other things. Not too much to be considered as a Sylus Genius.β You say while sipping on your drink.
He clicked his tongue, βThen it is my duty to make you one, the only one, perhaps.β
You felt your cheeks grow warmer, what a stupid reason to be blushing, but still, he laughs.
βI like that expression,β He stares at you, eyes soft and bright. Something rare to see from someone like him, yet here you are eliciting it effortlessly.
You're flipping through a poetry book when Sylus suddenly sets his phone down between you both, screen facing up.
Itβs a playlist. Titled: βFor Date One, if she lets me.β
You raise a brow. βReally?β
βI made it last night,β he says, sheepish. βIn case conversation got awkward.β
βIt already is awkward.β
βExactly. I planned ahead.β
You roll your eyes, but you canβt help the small grin tugging at your lips. You tap the first track. Soft acoustic guitar filters through the speakersβhe mustβve connected it to the cafΓ©βs Bluetooth. You recognize the song. Something nostalgic, early 2000s indie, a little cheesy, a little perfect.
βYouβre lucky I like this band,β you murmur.
βI know.β He rests his chin on his hand, watching you a little too closely. βI remembered.β
That makes you pause. You look at him, unsure how he means itβremembered like he Googled your old Spotify profile or remembered as inβ¦ back then.
Your stomach knots.
βWhat else do you remember?β you ask quietly, not fully meaning to say it aloud.
He doesnβt look away. βYou always carried two pens to class. A black one for notes. A blue one for thoughts.β
Your breath catches.
He keeps going. βYou always tied your hair up during exams, even if you didnβt need to. Said it helped you think.β
You donβt respond.
βAnd you once cried in the back row after a presentation because someone laughed at your voice when you read your script.β He pauses. βI wanted to punch them.β
You blink hard, your throat suddenly tight.
βI wasnβt brave then,β he adds softly. βI shouldβve said something. But I never forgot.β
You look away, blinking at the shelves, pretending to read the book in your hands. His words sit between you now, heavy but warm. Sincere.
After a long pause, you whisper, βTen dates might not be enough.β
Sylus smilesβjust barely. βThat wasnβt me winning you over, was it?β
You shake your head, voice barely audible. βThat was you... remembering me.β
He changes his seat from across you to beside you, before plugging one earphone in your ear while the other in his. βDecided not to let the whole cafe hear your little playlist?β
βYeah, itβs special for you.β
β
On date two, youβre still not sure how he roped you into this.
βThis is a terrible idea,β you say flatly, standing in the vegetable aisle with a shopping basket in hand while Sylus debates between two kinds of veggies like itβs a life-or-death decision.
He looks at you over his shoulder. βYou said you wanted something low-key. Whatβs lower key than cooking?β
βYou didnβt say Iβd be cooking with you.β
βTechnically, I said we would cook. Together.β He turns back to the mushrooms. βAlso, youβre stalling.β
βI just donβt trust you to know the difference between coriander and parsley.β
βThatβs fair,β he mutters, tossing the better-looking pack into the basket. βI Googled that this morning.β
You try not to smile, but it slips through anyway. He notices. You pretend not to see that he noticed.
His apartment is neat. Not obsessively clean, but clearly lived in. A jacket draped over a chair. A vinyl player in the corner. A pair of reading glasses on the coffee table you didnβt know he wore.
βYou can put your stuff anywhere,β he says, motioning to the couch. βShoes off if you want. I have house socks.β
You glance at him. βHouse socks?β
βYeah, you know. Guest socks. Clean, fluffy, magical.β
ββ¦Youβre a menace.β
βYouβll thank me in five minutes.β
You do. Theyβre ridiculously soft.
Cooking is chaotic. He chops vegetables like heβs in a rush to win a knife skills competition. You end up laughing when he puts the pasta in before the water boils and looks genuinely shocked when you scold him.
At one point, youβre both standing shoulder to shoulder at the stove, close enough to feel the heat of his arm. He smells like citrus and something woodsy. Not cologneβlike fabric softener and something more subtle.
You steal glances.
He catches one.
βWhat?β
You shrug. βNothing.β
βYou were looking.β
βMaybe.β
βYou were definitely looking.β
You roll your eyes, but youβre smiling. βYouβre insufferable.β
βAnd youβre cute when youβre trying to pretend this isnβt fun.β
You look up at him. βThis doesnβt mean I like you.β
βI know.β He says it gently. βBut it means youβre here.β
Dinner is good. Surprisingly so. You eat on the couch, plates balanced on your laps, a dumb movie playing in the background that neither of you really watches.
Halfway through, you notice him watching you again.
βWhat now?β
He shrugs. βNothing. You justβ¦ look comfortable.β
You pause. It feels like a compliment, but it sinks a little deeper than that.
βDo you want dessert?β he asks quickly, maybe sensing the shift.
You nod. βOnly if itβs something you didnβt burn.β
He laughs. βRude. I bought ice cream. Zero effort involved.β
He disappears into the kitchen. And for the first time in a long time, you let yourself lean back into the couch, socks on your feet, a full plate on your lapβand a feeling creeping in that maybe, just maybe, letting go of the past isnβt the same as forgetting it.
It might even be⦠the start of something new.
β
Itβs date seven.
The previous dates were all quiet and cozy, except for date five, where the both of you went to the amusement park. You've learnt that he hates rollercoasters due to their "anti-climatic" push when the controller decided to prolong the time at the top.
But for date seven?
You hadnβt expected a literal night market.
When Sylus texted you the location, you assumed it was a cafΓ© or some quiet restaurant again β something low-key, in line with your still-fragile dynamic.
Instead, youβre standing in the middle of a lively crowd, colorful lanterns strung overhead and the scent of grilled meat, fried snacks, and sugary things thick in the air.
βToo much?β he asks, appearing beside you with two skewers in hand. One of them is unrecognizable and probably a challenge.
You take the safer one.
βI thought you were the introvert.β
βI am,β he says with a smirk. βBut I figured if I keep taking you to quiet places, youβll keep overthinking.β
You raise an eyebrow. βAnd now Iβm supposed to... not overthink while holding a fishball skewer?β
βExactly. Itβs very grounding.β
You roll your eyes, but you donβt hand it back.
The night air is warm, heavy with humidity and noise, but thereβs something oddly comforting about being one small story in a sea of strangers. It makes things easier. Lighter.
Sylus walks beside you, not saying much, just letting the sights and sounds fill in the space between. Sometimes, his hand brushes yours β never on purpose, but never fully accidental either.
You pass a booth with handmade rings, mismatched and colorful.
He pauses. βPick one.β
You blink at him. βWhy?β
βDate seven deserves a souvenir.β
You glance at the table, then back at him. βIf I pick one, are you going to analyze what it means?β
βUndoubtedly.β
You sigh, but eventually point to a silver one with a tiny moon charm.
βCute,β he says, paying for it without asking.
He slides it onto your finger β careful, slow β and it makes you shiver, just a little.
βYou good?β he asks, eyes glancing up at you from beneath his lashes.
βIβm not used to this,β you admit, voice barely audible above the crowd.
βTo what?β
βTo beingβ¦ wanted. Again. Still.β
Heβs quiet for a moment. Then says, βYouβve always been wanted. I was just too late to realize it.β
You donβt respond. Just stare at the ring, then at the ground, then at him. Your heartβs too loud again. Too full of things you swore youβd buried.
Later, after sharing a cup of mango ice and pointing out constellations you canβt actually name, you find yourselves leaning against a closed-up stall. The marketβs winding down. The crowdβs thinning.
He nudges your shoulder gently. βDate seven complete.β
You glance at him. βThree more, huh?β
He nods. βUnless you cancel the package early.β
You smile, just slightly. βWhatβs the return policy?β
βNo refunds,β he says, voice low. βButβ¦ you could renew.β
You look away too quickly.
And he doesnβt press.
Just stands there beside you, hands in his pockets, like someone whoβs willing to wait β even if he doesnβt say it out loud.
The night breeze makes you shiver as youβre wearing nothing more than a thin blouse β a poor choice, you realize now, when the heat of the crowd starts to fade and the open air settles in.
Sylus notices immediately. He doesnβt say anything at first, just glances at you, then shrugs off his jacket.
βHere,β he says, holding it out.
You hesitate.
βIβm fine,β you mumble, though your arms betray you by hugging yourself tighter.
βYou always say that,β he replies gently, stepping closer. βLet me do one nice thing without making it weird.β
You sigh, but donβt fight it when he drapes the jacket around your shoulders. Itβs warm. Smells faintly like him β like cologne and comfort and something you wish you didnβt miss.
You clutch it closer anyway.
He doesnβt comment. Just gives you a small smile and walks beside you again, closer this time, like maybe his presence alone could shield you from the rest of the chill.
And for a second, just a second, you stop resisting how easy it is to lean a little closer.
And as if heβs trying to push his luck, he slowly takes your hand, and interlocks your fingers together, before bringing it in his pockets.
You glance at your hands together before looking up at him, while he looks up front, like whatever he did is natural and was clearly bound to happen for him.
βSeriously?β
He looks at you, βhelping you warm up.β He smiles.
β
Date nine.
You hadnβt planned on letting Sylus into your apartment yet.
Itβs too personal, too you β a space youβve protected the way youβve guarded your heart: meticulously. No loose ends, no open doors.
But itβs raining, and he showed up early with two bags of groceries and a sheepish grin.
βYou said you missed home-cooked food,β he says, already toeing off his shoes. βI make a decent curry. Or edible. Letβs start there.β
You narrow your eyes at him. βThat was weeks ago.β
He shrugs. βI remember things.β
You donβt have the energy to argue. Not when heβs already heading toward your kitchen like heβs been here before β like this isnβt some emotional line being crossed.
The apartment smells like garlic and coconut milk within the hour. Rain taps against your windows. Soft music hums from your phone speaker, something low and jazzy that fills the silence without drowning it.
You lean on the counter as he stirs the pot, sleeves rolled up, focused.
He looksβ¦ settled here. Like he belongs in your kitchen. Like the space didnβt mind opening up to him.
It makes something ache in your chest.
βYou cook often?β you ask.
βSometimes. Itβs... therapeutic. And cheaper than emotional damage.β
You snort. βYouβre not wrong.β
Thereβs a pause. Comfortable.
Then you ask, βWhy are you really doing this? The ten dates, I mean.β
He doesnβt look up at first. Just stirs slowly. Thoughtfully.
βBecause I wanted to show you I could mean something to you,β he says quietly. βWithout rushing. Without trying to fix what I broke before. Justβ¦ be there this time.β
You blink.
The honesty, the simplicity of it β it lands heavier than you expect.
βI donβt need fixing,β you murmur.
βI know.β He finally looks at you. βBut you deserve someone who knows that.β
Dinner is warm. Slightly too spicy. You both laugh over it. You tease him for almost setting your pan on fire and he teases you for owning only two forks.
When he leaves later β umbrella in hand, jacket still with you β thereβs a folded napkin left under your mug.
On it, in scribbled black ink: βYou feel like home. Date Tenβs going to be dangerous.β
You stare at the note long after the door closes behind him.
And for the first time in a long time, you donβt feel afraid of whatβs next.
β
At least thatβs what you thought you felt.
It has been two weeks, 14 days.
You hadnβt meant to pull away.
Work just... got in the way.
One last-minute project turned into two. A client call stretched past midnight. You started checking your phone less, replying slower. Not intentionally β just the kind of slow fade that happens when real life creeps in.
Sylus doesnβt push. He sends a meme here and there, a good morning text you forget to answer until lunch. A voice note one evening β gentle, teasing β asking if youβre still alive and if he should send a search party or just a very persistent delivery driver with bubble tea.
You laugh, but donβt reply right away.
When you finally do, itβs short. Something like, βJust swamped. Talk soon?β
He leaves it at that. No guilt. No pressure. But still β it lingers.
You miss him.
Worse, you realize it on a Tuesday night, forehead pressed against your desk, your laptop glowing 2:47 a.m. back at you, and all you can think about isnβt the project due at 8 a.m.
Itβs that you havenβt seen Sylus in almost two weeks.
And you donβt know what Date Ten is supposed to be anymore.
That was until you heard your front doorbell ring.
You blink, groggy. Itβs late. Not a normal time for someone to suddenly show up, but close enough that your heart stutters as you push up from your desk.
Padding to the door in mismatched socks and a hoodie you barely remember putting on, you glance through the peephole.
Itβs Sylus.
Holding a paper bag, umbrella folded under his arm, hair damp like he walked the last few steps in the rain.
You hesitate for half a second before opening the door.
βHi,β he says, voice soft. βI come bearing caffeine and snacks.β
You stare at him.
βI... you didnβt text,β you manage, your voice scratchy with fatigue and something that feels suspiciously like guilt.
βYou werenβt replying,β he says simply, not accusing. Just... explaining. βAnd I figured if I waited for a calendar opening, Iβd see you in October.β
That earns a weak laugh from you.
βI didnβt mean to ignore you,β you mumble, stepping aside to let him in. βWorkβs beenββ
ββhell. I know.β He toes off his shoes and heads to your kitchen like itβs routine now. βI figured you wouldnβt feed yourself properly either.β
You blink at the bag he sets down. Soup. Tea. A small pastry you once said you liked.
βYou didnβt have to.β
βI know,β he says again, but thereβs no heat in it.
Just the same gentle, unshakeable Sylus from Date One through Nine. The same one who gave you space, and nowβunexpectedlyβshows up without asking for anything back.
You exhale slowly, walls slowly lowering.
βI forgot what day it was,β you say.
He smiles faintly. βItβs not Date Ten. Yet. This is just... a bonus round.β
You sit down at the counter. He pours you tea without asking. You watch him, warmth curling up beneath your ribs.
βYou didnβt give up.β
βNope,β he says. βI said ten dates. Iβm not going anywhere until you get all ten.β
You look at him. Tired, but soft. Edges worn down by the weeks, but still holding space for him.
You reach for the tea. βOkay,β you murmur. βLetβs call this one... nine and a half.β
Sylus grins. βNine-point-five. Iβll take it.β
You nurse the cup of tea slowly, letting the heat seep into your fingers. The apartment is dim except for your desk lamp, casting a soft glow across the space. Rain continues tapping against the window, steady and hushed.
Sylus sits on the other side of the counter, watching you β not in a way that makes you self-conscious, but like heβs trying to memorize the moment.
βYour eyes get glassy when youβre running on four hours of sleep,β he says gently.
You raise a brow. βYou make that sound factual.β
βMaybe it is,β he says, and heβs not joking.
Thereβs something weighted in the silence that follows, but not heavy. Just... full. Brimming with all the things neither of you have dared to say out loud since that blind date started everything again.
You look down at your tea. βI didnβt mean to pull away.β
βI know,β he says. βAnd I didnβt show up to make you feel bad.β
βThen why did you show up?β
He pauses. And thenβ
βBecause I missed you,β he says, quiet but certain. βAnd I wanted you to remember what it feels like to be taken care of, even when your worldβs on fire.β
You stare at him.
It hits in a strange place β the truth of it, the care, the timing. The softness in his voice that reaches you deeper than any grand gesture ever could.
And maybe itβs the hour. Maybe itβs your exhaustion. Or maybe itβs the way he hasnβt stopped looking at you like youβre something fragile but worth holding onto.
But when you set your cup down, and say, βCome here,β your voice is steady.
He doesnβt question it. Just moves.
You meet him halfway around the counter. The rain hums in the background, steady and soft. Heβs close now β warm, still damp at the edges from the walk over.
You look up at him. βThis... doesnβt make us even,β you murmur.
βIβm not trying to settle a score.β
You hesitate. Then, finallyβfinallyβyou step into him.
And when you kiss him, itβs slow. Not rushed or desperate. Just a quiet press of lips in the middle of a rainy midnight, in an apartment that suddenly doesnβt feel so tired anymore.
His hand finds the side of your face, thumb grazing your cheek. Yours curls into the front of his jacket like you need to hold onto something steady.
Itβs not a first kiss full of fireworks or dramatic music.
Itβs soft.
Earned.
Real.
And when you pull back, neither of you says anything right away. He just presses his forehead to yours and exhales the smallest, happiest breath.
You smile.
βTenβs going to be dangerous,β you whisper.
He grins. βThen itβs a good thing Iβve got nine and a half reasons to survive it.β
β
You wake up to sunlight sneaking through the curtains and the unmistakable scent of coffee.
For a moment, you think maybe you dreamed it all β the rain, the tea, the kiss.
But then you hear gentle clinking in the kitchen.
You push yourself up from the couch, blanket slipping off your shoulders, and find Sylus standing by your stove like heβs been there a hundred times. One of your mugs in hand. His hair still slightly messy from sleep.
He glances over when he hears you. βMorning.β
His voice is quiet. Familiar. Safe.
βYou stayed,β you say, more like a thought than a question.
He tilts his head. βDid you think I wouldnβt?β
You shrug. βI donβt know. I kissed you and then fell asleep in the middle of your jacket, so I wasnβt really thinking straight.β
Sylus chuckles, crossing the room to hand you a fresh cup of coffee.
You take it with a small, grateful hum and sip. Itβs perfect. Just how you like it.
He nods toward the table where heβs already laid out toast and eggs β simple but warm. Intentional.
βYou didnβt have to do all this,β you say.
βI know,β he replies. βBut I wanted the first morning after our nine-and-a-halfth date to start right.β
You pause. The phrase makes your chest tighten β not in a painful way. Just full. Softened.
βYouβre very good at this, you know,β you murmur.
βWhat? Being your emergency food delivery guy?β
You give him a look, and he smirks, stepping closer until your hipβs pressed lightly against the counter and heβs standing in front of you.
βNo,β you say. βAt... making it feel easy.β
He shrugs, but thereβs something fond in his eyes. βIt is easy. When itβs you.β
That line shouldnβt make your heart skip, but it does. And before you can overthink it β again β he leans down and brushes a kiss to your temple, then your cheek, then finally your lips. This one slower, softer than the night before.
βLet me stay a little longer,β he murmurs when you part.
You nod, not trusting your voice.
Because for once, you donβt feel the need to run ahead or fall behind. You just want this moment.
His.
A few hours later, Sylus left, and date ten starts.
Youβre already suspicious when Sylus tells you not to wear anything too fancy, and even more so when he insists on picking you up himself.
βI swear, if this is a paintball arenaββ βItβs not,β he laughs, hand warm around yours as he leads you down a quiet path.
It isnβt until you recognize the stone archway ahead that your heart stumbles. Your old campus.
You blink. βYou didnβt.β He raises a brow. βDidnβt what?β βThis is where I met you.β βItβs where I saw you,β he corrects gently. βYou met me after tripping over your own feet trying to sit in the last row.β
You gasp in mock outrage. βThatβs notβokay, that is accurate.β
He grins, tugging you toward one of the empty benches just outside the old lecture hall. The sunβs low, sky blushing gold and soft blue.
βThereβs a picnic,β he says, motioning to the small setup β nothing over the top. A blanket, some pastries, cold brew in glass bottles, and a small stack of your favorite snacks.
You sit beside him, heart full and quiet.
βYou remembered this place,β you murmur, looking out over the familiar quad where your lives once barely brushed each otherβs.
βI remembered you in this place,β he says. βThat matters more.β
You glance at him. His expression is soft, unreadable in the best way β like heβs still amazed youβre here.
βYou know,β you say after a while, voice quieter, βif we didnβt go on that blind date... we might not have ever come back to this.β
He hums, thoughtful. βMaybe. But I think something else wouldβve pulled us together eventually.β
You raise a brow. βThatβs bold.β βThatβs fate,β he says simply. βStubborn. Annoying. Kind of like you, actually.β
You nudge him, trying not to laugh. βYou just ruined the moment.β
He shrugs. βGuess Iβll have to fix it.β
And he kisses you.
Not a hesitant first. Not a sudden second. But a tenth-date kind of kiss β full of memory, promise, and quiet affection that doesnβt need to prove itself anymore.
When you pull away, you press your forehead to his.
βThis is my favorite date,β you whisper.
βMine too,β he replies. βBut... I want to show you something.β
His voice has shifted β softer now, more careful.
You watch as Sylus reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a timeworn envelope. Cream-colored. Slightly bent at the corners. A familiar messy swirl of ink where your handwriting signed his name.
Your breath leaves you. βIs thatβ?β
He nods slowly. βYour letter. From freshman year.β
Your world tilts a little. βIβI thought I threw it away afterβ¦ after you said no.β
He looks at the envelope like itβs fragile. Like itβs sacred. βYou gave it to me after that group project, remember? You said I could read it or pretend it never existed. I was too much of a coward to say anything back then.β
βYou folded it and put it in your backpack,β you murmur. βDidnβt even open it in front of me.β
βI read it that night,β he admits. βTwice.β
Your eyes sting.
βI was young. Stupid. Scared. You wrote something so sincere, and I didnβt know how to be what you deserved. So I told myself it was easier to say nothing than to mess anything up.β
Youβre silent. The weight of years pressing in on you. On both of you.
He carefully opens the envelope, pulling out the folded pages inside. The paperβs softened over time, but your words are still there β full of nerves, and longing, and a kind of bravery you barely recognize anymore.
He starts to read it aloud. Not theatrically. Not to embarrass you. But like it matters. Like itβs still beating.
To. Sylus Qin.
This might be stupid, in fact, this may be the dumbest thing youβve ever encountered in your life. But if I donβt write this down, I might have even more sleepless nights overthinking all these thoughts in my head.
I like you. I really do. Ever since the first day of psych class. It felt like love at first sight but I donβt want to be dramatic with this, I canβt help it. The way you can answer every question the Prof gave us, or when you seemed to laugh so freely at your friendβs awful jokes (I sometimes overheard you guys, he was being pretty loud), Or maybe when you held the door open for everyone that one rainy morning even though you were soaked.
Itβs okay if you donβt feel the same. I just needed you to know. Because I want to be brave, and this letter is the only way I know how.Β
You cringe at the words your past self wrote to him, burying your face in your hands with a soft groan. βWhy did I have to say all that when I still got upset that you rejected me?β
Sylus chuckles, folding the letter back with surprising care before slipping it into his pocket again. βBecause it was honest. And brave. And a little dramatic,β he adds, smirking.
You glare at him through your fingers. βI was nineteen.β
βAnd very articulate for someone confessing their heart and soul,β he teases. βHonestly, I think thatβs when I started falling for you β I just didnβt know what to do with it back then.β
You lower your hands slowly, blinking. βFalling?β
βDonβt make me repeat it,β he says, leaning in just a little. βMy prideβs already hanging by a thread.β
Your lips twitch despite yourself. βThatβs what you get for carrying emotional artifacts in your coat pocket.β
He grins. βThat letterβs my proof that you liked me first.β
You laugh, swatting his shoulder lightly. βYouβre impossible.β
βMaybe,β he shrugs. βBut Iβm here. And if youβre still mad about nineteen-year-old me being a dumbass... I can make it up to you.β
βOh?β you raise a brow, suddenly wary. βHow?β
He lifts your joined hands and presses a kiss to the back of yours. βTen more dates. Starting with breakfast tomorrow. Iβll even bring coffee and not screw up the order.β
You hesitate β heart twisting, tugged between the embarrassment of the past and the fragile wonder of now.
But then you smile, small and real.
βOnly if I donβt have to write any more letters.β
Sylus leans in, nose nearly brushing yours. βNo more letters. Just us.β
β
One Year Later
βYou shrunk my sweater!β you shout from the bedroom, holding up the tiny, once-cozy piece of clothing like it's been murdered.
Sylus appears in the doorway, toothbrush in hand. βIt said warm wash!β
You point an accusatory finger. βIt said hand wash only, you chaos gremlin!β
He squints. βAre you sure?β
You shove the tag in his face. βDoes this look unsure to you?β
He pauses, leans in, reads the tag, then slowly backs away like it might bite. βOkay. So I may have misread.β
βYou may have committed a war crime.β
He raises a brow. βItβs just a sweater.β
βIt was my comfort sweater. My post-long-day, rainy-night, sad-girl-hours sweater!β
Sylus tries not to smile. βSad-girl-hours?β
You glare. βDonβt mock me in my time of grief.β
He disappears for a moment and returns with a hoodie β his hoodie. He tosses it at you.
You catch it and blink. βWhatβs this?β
βOfficial replacement,β he says with a shrug. βItβs softer. Smells better. Probably has my good boyfriend energy woven into the threads.β
You squint at him. βBribery.β
βCompromise,β he says, smug. βAlso, you look cuter in my clothes anyway.β
You roll your eyes and pull the hoodie on. It is soft. And warm. And kind of smells like him and cinnamon.
ββ¦Youβre lucky Iβm forgiving,β you mumble.
βAnd youβre lucky Iβm good at laundry 87% of the time.β
You shake your head, already smiling. βThat 13% is dangerous.β
βI live on the edge,β he smirks, walking away.
You sigh dramatically, flopping onto the bed in your oversized hoodie.
βNext time,β you call out, βIβm making you sort socks for a week.β
βBabe!β he yells and comes back at you making you look up at him. βWhat now?β
He went to sit beside you on the bed, before suddenly crashing on top of you with all his weight. You let out an exaggerated oof as he smothered you like a human blanket.
βMy hourly kiss,β he mumbled against your cheek, already pressing a noisy one there.
You squirm under him, half-laughing, half-annoyed. βYouβre so heavy, Sylusβget off before my ribs turn into dust!β
βNope,β he says, settling in even more like a cat refusing to move. βThis is rent. You wore my hoodie. Now you pay in affection.β
βYouβre ridiculous,β you mutter, but your arms are already wrapping around him out of habit.
He lifts his head just enough to look down at you, his grin softening into something gentler. βYou love it.β
You wrinkle your nose, but your heart betrays you. βI do.β
He leans down, brushing his nose against yours. βGood. Now hurry and give me my kiss.β
You roll your eyes but oblige, lips brushing his in something far sweeter than the bickering that led to it.
And somehow, even after a year and countless ridiculous arguments, it still makes your heart race like itβs the first.
βMmh..β He smiles into the kiss, like he always does.
You try to pull away, but his grip on you tightens and the kiss turns into something more rougher, more passionate.
βNot done,β Sylus murmurs, his voice low against your lips.
The next kiss catches you off guardβno longer playful, but deeper, rougher. Like heβs been waiting for this exact moment all day. His hand slides to the back of your neck, tilting your face toward him, anchoring you to the moment.
It makes your breath hitch, makes your fingers curl in the fabric of his shirt like youβre afraid to let go.
Itβs still Sylusβstill familiar, still homeβbut thereβs something new in the way he kisses you now. Like all the quiet moments, the bickering, the small touches and soft laughs have been building to this. Like heβs telling you something he hasnβt yet found the words for.
When you finally pull back, your lips are tingling and your heart is racing far too fast.
Heβs staring at you like you hung the stars.
You swallow. βWhat was that for?β
He doesnβt smileβjust brushes your hair behind your ear and says, βFelt like a good time to remind you.β
You blink. βRemind me of what?β
He leans in, voice barely above a whisper. βThat Iβm in love with you. And I mean it every hour, not just the one with the kiss.β
Your chest tightens in the best way. You canβt quite speak, but your hand finds his, and thatβs enough for now.
βI love you, baby.β He smiles.
And when you reply, he hugs you, wrapping your body in the warmth only he could provide for you. You sigh in his arms in content.
Youβre happy, both of you are.
And you couldn't ask for more.
fin.

getting use to the new roomate
When you come up with the courage to ask your boyfriend, Caleb, for a plushie to keep with your at night, he looks at you like you've just propositioned him to enter a polyamorous relationship with a third person.
But your eyes are sparkling, and your smile is lovely, so he lets out an "alright" before he even realizes.
So now, not only does he have to live with the knowledge of you sleeping with someone something else, but he has to choose it, too.
Yeah, Caleb doesn't really appreciate this kind of irony.
To make matters worse, it doesn't look like Gideon is willing to be helpful in figuring out a solution.
"just buy a plushie that looks like you."
How is Caleb supposed to explain that he doesn't want you hugging a plushie instead of him without looking like a lunatic? It's tricky.
So he pretends to forget, for the time being.
And you, on your part, pretend that Caleb is able to forget something that is about you. Every now and again, though, you slow down when walking past a toy shop, staring and the articles on display.
Sometimes, you even ask him, "What do you think of that one, Caleb? It's cute, isn't it?"
Caleb hums and nods, white knuckles and a tight smile.
He reaches a breaking point after going shopping with you and having to witness his girlfriend hug various plushies to figure out 'which one fit right'.
"I just want to explain how I feel without looking like an asshole."
"You are being one, though." Gideon's reply comes quicker than normal.
Caleb can barely keep from punching his shoulder.
"you are being selfish and you can't even see it."
"Elaborate."
With a tired sigh and a rub of his eyes, Gideon turns around to face Caleb, squaring himself as if he was about to explain long division to a toddler.
"we are gone for long periods of time. Your girlfriend is not trying to replace you. She just wants something to keep with herself when you're not there. That's why it's so important that you choose it."
Understanding dawns upon Caleb and his friend grins. "Do you get it now?"
That night, when you open the door to your flat, you don't see your boyfriend. Instead, you come face to face with a plushie version of him, clad in uniform and everything.
"what...?"
Caleb does appear from behind, grinning while holding the toy: "Here you go! Your very own, very exclusive, limited edition Caleb plushie!"
You let out a squeal and immediately grab it, hugging it tight to your chest. "He's perfect!"
Caleb, who's let himself inside, sneaks his arms between you and well, the smaller version of him.
"ah, ah, ah. Let's agree on one rule first: tiny Caleb" he points at it, "will retire once big Caleb comes back."
Rolling your eyes at your jealous boyfriend, you agree, but not before stamping a kiss on both their foreheads.
I love Levi but I can just tell that motherfucker would eat pizza with a fork..
The one time he's happy
