Today is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's Day MMIW. As of 2016 5,712 cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls have gone missing. In my state we have 90 unsolved cases of missing indigenous women. This is unacceptable! Native American are always over looked, this must stop. May 5th is Awareness of Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls. Because of covid my tribe wasn't able to participate until today. Did you know Native women are 2x more likely to experience violence than any other graphic? Did you know Native womens murder rates are 10x higher than the national average? 12x higher in Canada. Did you know that 84% of Native women experience some kind of violence, 56% will experience sexual violence. There are over 5,712 cases of missing Native women in the USA. Only 116 were logged into the DOJ in 2018. My state has 90 cases of missing indigenous women, mostly from urban areas. Seattle has 45. This violence against Native women must end. I had a lot of fun making this durning the pandemic. It's jersey fabric that came in two colors, one had the leaf print on it. After cutting out the shapes (bodice, etc.) you then fit both fabrics together, the leaf pattern being on top, then stitch (hand sew) the leaf pattern to the under fabric. Once that is done you cut away everything that wasn't a leaf, leaving the under fabric to show through. Once that is finished then construction begins all hand sewing. I actually prefer hand sewing to machine, it makes me feel really connected to the piece. This took about 3 months as I was doing other projects too. All of this is the lovechild of #Natalie Chainin, I love her handmade clothing but most people like me can't afford it so she created books and kits so we can enjoy her garments too.
