So, another way to phrase this could be ‘you get the best sleep in multiples of one hundred and twenty minutes.’ If your nap lasts one hundred and twenty minutes, or two hundred and forty minutes, or three hundred and eighty minutes, or five hundred minutes, that’s a very effective nap.” [Araragi: “You could hardly call it a nap at that point…”] “But did you know, Araragi? Those aren’t the only multiples of one hundred and twenty minutes. Someone taking a twenty minute nap is also napping for a multiple of one hundred and twenty minutes. Depending on what you multiply by, any number is a multiple of one hundred and twenty minutes. That doesn’t mean, of course, that any number fits the bill. Actually, when people say ‘a multiple of one hundred and twenty,’ Araragi, they actually mean a multiple which is the result of a positive whole integer. They discard every other meaning of the word ‘multiple,’ Araragi. There’s nothing abnormal about this. In order to preserve something commonplace, all sorts of meanings can be discarded. All I’m trying to say, Araragi, is to have sympathy for some of those abandoned meanings. Even if they aren’t preserving something commonplace, even if they make things inconvenient or nonsensical, some people might grow very attached to their meanings. All I’m saying, Araragi, is to have some sympathy for those other people’s perspectives.”
