The dogs were dead by morning and the kids squatted around both bodies. The shirtless one with flip flops put a stick in one of the dog's eyes and left it there. He stood and walked around it, put his foot on the dog's ribs as though walking up a staircase and took the step. The dog's body released like a bellows, shooting a small spray of snot across the dirt. The other two rubbed their shins and forearms and tugged at the other dog's tail and hind leg. The youngest one scraped the sleep off her eyes and walked inside where she told her father that the dogs had died. The two kids outside stood when they saw the girl's father approaching. She was holding his hand and walked behind his right leg. When the father asked about the stick, the other boy pointed at the shirtless kid with his bare foot. The shirtless boy tripped runnig away and left behind his flip flops. The father examined the dogs' necks and mouths, sighed, picked up the flip flops, and went inside. He came back out with plastic grocery bags and had his daughter and the boy each hold a loop while he picked up the smaller dog. They weren't ready for the dog's weight and the bag fell. The father inhaled deeply and cleared his throat as softly as he could. He pinched his eyes, dragged his hand down his face, and the kids went inside leaving him to finish on his own.
