Gilbert is the grandson of Trithemius' founder, War Hero Arminius Beilschmidt. As he attends wizard school one thing protecting him from the occasional bully are his friends, Antonio and Francis.
Ivan is a Russian foreign exchange student, intended to be the guinea pig of his school, Lazarev, to build a foundation of trust after the horrible events of the past.
It becomes Gilberts duty and pleasure to guide Ivan through the challenges of being in a new school, in a new country.
Ivan and Gilbert look at each other for an uncomfortable moment. Then Gilbert reaches out his hand and puts on an encouraging smile for him: "Hey! It's nice to meet you!"
This behemoth of a kid takes his hand and gives it an unenthusiastic shake, then smiles at him and responds courteously: "Nice to meet you too."
His hand is surprisingly cold and boney and leaves a weirdly lingering feeling in his own that Gilbert has to resist wiping it off, instead casually slipping his hands in his pockets.
First he gets very, very angry. But he bites his tongue and thinks about what his grandfather would do. He tries to be smart about this immediate emergency situation.
"You good?", he asks him with as much calm as he can muster, but he sounds furious.
Then Ivan has the audacity to give him a annoyed look at this redundant question. This pushes Gilbert over the edge. He clenches his fists.
"What the fuck was that! You almost killed me back there!"
Ivan still sort of gives him this angry look and it makes Gilberts blood boil so badly, he just has to punch something.
"He puts on a smile. "Aha, speak of the devil. I was just thinking about you. You look really scary in candle light."
Gilbert's face lets Ivan know he did not appreciate that comment. Instead of even acknowledging it, he repeats: "So what are you doing there with the walls?"
Ivan lets his book sink slowly, pondering his response as he looks at him through the darkness for a moment, then turns to face him fully. He exaggerates his fake smile for just a moment as he bends towards him. "I am looking for weak points in the structure for planting bombs…", he almost hisses with glee, but then he can’t help but let out a giggle at this preposterous story.
Ivan tried to pull away, shaking his head profusely. Before he could slip from his grasp, Gilbert grabbed both his hands and forced him to look at his face.
"Ivan, I won't lie to you. Do you trust me?"
"I don't know.", Ivan mumbled as their eyes met.
"I promise nothing will happen. I swear on my life that Gilbird is nice. Touch him once and then you never have to do it again. Okay?"
"No.", Ivan pleaded, his hands balled fists around Gilberts.
"You can close your eyes. Just hold up your hand like this."
He relented and let Gilbert position his shaking hand.
