Amy/Jake High School AU (inspired by falulatonks)

OK, so they would still be nerdy try-hards in totally different ways, obviously, but they’re in the same AP classes, and they don’t like working together so much but when they do they do SO WELL so they keep doing it, on all of their projects. Amy is a little uptight and scared of failing and Jake goofs off a lot but he’s also scared of failing, and they’re both kind of lonely. (One day Amy’s sick but she needs to submit an assignment so she sends it to Jake, and he makes sure to print it out single-spaced and double-sided.)

They both run for the student elections and she campaigns for smart things like better facilities and he campaigns for fun things like better school lunches and they both win so they’re CO-STUDENT PRESIDENTS. And they get super competitive and are SO MAD ABOUT IT and they totally wreck the dance they need to plan together, but the only others left on the committee (ROSA! BOYLE! TEACHER/COACH-IN-TRAINING TERRY WHO IS ONLY IN HIS EARLY TWENTIES BUT LOVES THESE DUMB KIDS (Holt is their consulting teacher)) manage to put something together that is terrible, but still functional. (Amy and Jake are told to figure out the music and they are allowed to do nothing else. They later probably have one awkward dance.)

They all go to a party together the next week but they all hate it and end up sitting in the corner of the room and Jake gets them drinks and Amy’s is exactly right and exactly what she wanted and Rosa is pressing her shoulder into hers and she suddenly realises wait, these are my best friends, I’m doing okay. (Also she got Holt to agree to writing a recommendation for her college application so YEAH SHE’S TOTALLY GOT THIS.)

amy is a band geek she plays an overly large instrument like a trombone or tuba or cello and jake carries it for her they’re probably arguing about something walking home from school and amy is making all wild arm gestures except the giant case is getting in the way so jake takes it from her without a second thought and amy doesn’t notice until they’re probably in front of her house when he goes to hand it back to her and she’s just like …thanks and he’s like no problem and then he probably does some dumb boy thing like punch her arm

The other day I had a really good idea for a story:

A high school Shakespeare club angrily splits into two groups when they can’t agree on the correct interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. One group thinks it’s a cautionary tale about the stupidity of youth and shallow lust; the other group think it’s a beautiful tragedy about poisonous hatred conquered by love. Reconciliation seems impossible-
