The holding cell room, no matter how little I could understand why a facility for coding had one, though supposedly an installment made when the building was used for… 'ulterior purposes', had long been barred off from employees. I had never truly considered why they never got rid of it, and how it was of any use to them.
Today, out of pure curiosity, the dangerous type that gets the cat killed, I went and checked the building's over-all electricity usage. Everything appeared normal at the present—as to be expected, electricity use higher in rooms with more machines and servers. And so, boredom getting the better of me, I looked through the previous logs, going back through the years.
There was something wrong with the data provided. An anomaly.
The usage of electricity in the holding room spiked from a dead flatline to a steady, medium output (presumably that of a singular, relatively large automated machine?) that lasted the span of 3 years, before dropping out again…
What in that room was using electricity?
Who in that room was using electricity?
Three years is a long time, sure, but it didn't fluctuate.
Three years ago, he disappeared. 'Freak'—though I hate to call him by that, had apparently returned home to live in his mother's custody under mysterious, hushed circumstances. I still don't believe it. It had to be a cover-up.
He rarely ever spoke of his parents, whether it was because I was more of a father to him that his true father was, or whether it was something deeper; something lingering and uncomfortable.
I didn't question it until he disappeared. Too polite to pry. But if he had disappeared; gone back to his mother freely over staying where he felt most at home, why had he never mentioned them?
There must have been a scandal. An issue that had to be dealt with or disposed of.
Or at least, find out what happened.
