Welcome to our QS204 Zine Project. We hope to convey a sense of queerness and unity with our Zines and that our playlists are filled to the brim with jammable queer songs.

Being queer can be utterly terrifying but a completely beautiful experience. No matter how you choose to express your identity or identities, what matters is the happiness and love you can feel within yourself and towards yourself.

Todrick has always kind of been out of the closet and began posting music on his YouTube channel. Most of his videos consisted of disney covers, audition tapes and later his own music. He’s always shown his support for the community through his videos; one of my favorites being Cinderfella, a gay take on Cinderella!

Lil Nas X, on the other hand, wasn’t going to come out and he would have kept this secret to himself. But he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to. Though the music genre he does music in isn’t the MOST accepting of queer people, he chose to be himself.

He understood that by making music, he can reach people and provide a different way of looking at things.

There still isn’t a whole lot of acceptance from the Latinx community when it comes to queer issues but that doesn’t mean that queer people within that community are gonna stop. Queer brown people will continue to fight for acceptance because of our resilience. Si se puede!!

Holland is a Korean singer who began releasing music in 2018 with his song ‘Neverland.’ The music video, in particular gained a lot of attention from people overseas because of the same-sex kiss that was included. This, however, got a lot of backlash within Korea and even got the song an 18+ rating, which restricted it’s viewers.

The song was about wanting to be in a special place with your significant other and the song hardly mentions gender so it can be applied to any one!

The artist received a lot of backlash but he continued making this music because he knew that there would people who related to his music on a queer level.

In his most recent song, Loved You Better, Holland wanted to convey a message mainly to himself. The song is about learning to love oneself and being able to grow despite many obstacles thrown one’s way.

In her song Quiet, MILCK wants you to always remember that you are more than your past and that you are never alone. She’s a powerful singer and activist, and has created the #ICANTKEEPQUIET movement to provide resources and a community for sexual assault survivors.

Kiyoko identified as queer in 6th grade when her parents pushed the idea of it being a “phase”. Later in high school she developed feelings for her best friend. 

Song - Kehlani released “Honey” back in 2017.

It is a candid love song on her relationship with a woman. In an interview with MTV she stated “I thought it was important to be myself fluidly in my music and not just in my life. My art mimics my life, so you know I have a girlfriend, and it’s only right that that’s what I make music about and that I’m able to put that out confidently”. 

The song gives us a deeper more personal look into Kehlani’s love life, when she didn’t have to.
