"This is so racist and sexist… why should black girls be more empowered than anyone else? I, “surprisingly", as a white male, could use some support as a coder. You should support people who WANT code, not those who are “coloured" (and this term itself is racist) or female"

I am done. Everywhere I go today, some racist is spewing hate. I can’t get away from it.
Feel free to support BLACK GIRLS CODE and like minded diversity inclusion programs, because this is what they deal with everyday.
As a woman of color who codes, I am really happy that this program exists. I would love to see more of us in the industry!
Black Girls CODE is a nonprofit organization whose mission has transformed into a global movement to give women of color the tools to become inventors, leaders and creators of their own future in the world's technology economy. We are onto something big. Since last year's Summer of CODE 2012, Black Girls CODE has received requests from over 80 cities around the world asking us to bring our workshop to their town. Summer of Code 2013 - The Remix is the first step in responding to this demand! Donate and support their new Summer of Code 2013! http://igg.me/at/BGCTheRemix

I really want to bolster my CS skills this summer; I'm relatively new to this field, classes in intro Python, C and C++. Obviously, I am not going to fall into the trap of just doing programs for homework. But I really am having trouble focusing on WHAT to do? Should I learn Ruby, refine my C++ and Python skills, build a website, do a side project? Do I even know enough to contribute to an open source project? So my question is: how do you figure out your Grand Project?
I guess the best thing to do would be to start learning C so you can understand the basics since you’re relatively new.
I highly recommend the book, The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Richie. You can check it out at your local library or order it online. This book has a lot of examples of using C in multiple settings. Then, you’ll be able to move on to side projects and reference the book if need be. Practice makes perfect. I’ve also heard that starting with Python is also a good introduction to programming languages. Look at other people’s code and figure out how and why they would write it that way.
Also, find something you’re interested in that’s related to programming to motivate you to learn more. For example, I love playing video games and animation, so that encouraged me to learn more about using programs like Maya and coding simple games via PyGame.
If you have a specific question about a problem you may run into, stackoverflow.com is a great resource as well.
On the sidebar of this blog there's also some links to free tutorials for different languages.
Hope this helps get you started!

why the h*ck would you want to use mouse interactions in the console o_O
I honestly don’t know myself. Classes (college courses I mean, pun unintended) make students do the strangest things. O_O
[In response to this ask.]
Hi um so Im taking a course in java and im not great at it. Would you mind helping me out with something? I dont know how to do anything with mouse interactions in Console. Im not alowed to use swing so im having trouble finding an answer... Help?
Hi, there! To be honest I’m not sure. Are you trying to do a particular interaction in Console?
I found this thread that may help answer your question, but my followers may have a better answer. If any of you know, you can reply or respond to this user directly! :)

Hi, im an IT student and currently on my 2nd year. Is it possible that I could still learn programming even though we're 2 semesters late? By LATE, what I mean is that we didn't learn anything from our professor for the 2 previous semesters - cause he doesn't know how to teach! - and now that we have Data Structure class, we don't know how to program! Any tips how my classmates and I could cope with this?
Hi! It’s not too late at all. My computer science professor freshman year was an adjunct who majored in geography and didn’t know anything about java! True story.
I think the best thing to do is to talk to your Data Structures professor or TA. Maybe they’re not aware of how much the class knows. That way, everyone can start on a level that they can understand.
As for languages, I recommend starting from C, though everyone has their own preference.
Here’s a list of free sources to get you started: http://programmer-problems.tumblr.com/indexHope this helps!
Hello, everyone! Thank you for submissions! For some reason tumblr doesn't show notifications on my ask/submission box, so I'm sorry that I have not posted. I am also currently abroad in China, so I may queue some posts over the summer.
I will post the submissions and post answers by the end of today, 6/19.
Thanks!

An Essay on What is Wrong with How Computer Programming is Taught in Many Universities.
Computer science educators have generally gravitated toward teaching programming using easier languages of the day under the assumption that the students would be more receptive to them. But are the students’ long-term interests really served by this approach? Doesn’t using the socalled easier languages for teaching programming amount to teaching serious musical composition with a banjo? Even more fundamentally, what do we mean by teaching programming? It is important to explore these issues given the critical role played by software in all facets of human existence today.
