Process and Enquiry

FINAL 3D OUTCOME 

Tights dyed in turmeric to create this yellow hue based on the fact that yellow is the scientific form of anxiety, particularly darker yellows. 

I stuffed the tights with toy filling and created these soft tubules which I wove together to create a soft yet solid wall weave.

An alternative to this idea of 3d wallpaper, a 3d mesh of anxiety, organically growing on the walls. The tubules twist around, push against, constrict eachother. I get a feeling of frantic chaotic movement when looking at the piece. 

Inspired by the textile work of Sarah Lucas, these biomorphic exaggerated forms she creates using tights and stuffing. 

Her pieces challenge what it means to be female, they play with this idea of what is feminine and macho. She portrays women in a stereotypically masucline way, showing that a female doesnt have to addhere the societal perception of women. 

 I am drawn to creating these multi sensory environments as a means of changing peoples immediate perception. 

Forces active participation in the experience. 

360 immersion in a concept, 

Immersion in anxiety, a fully yellow space with yellow objects which express different representations of feeling anxious.. uncomfortable textures, 3d wallpaper which distorts visual senses, 19hz sub audio tone piped in? 

Or a space which relieves anxiety? Including lavender scented pieces, sculptural furniture which squeezes the sitter (pressure therapy), floor to ceiling textured walls for being to lie on, calming tone piped in? 

Therapeutic art installation 

Multi sensory rooms have been proven to be stress-relieving and positively stimulating for people on the autism spectrum, who are overwhelmed by the normal sensory environment in the world. 

Ernesto Neto’s istallations offer a chance for the viewer to touch, see, smell, and feel his artworks for a truly sensory experience. “For me, mind and body are one thing, always together,” the artist has said. “I believe in the sensual body, and it is through the movement of such body-minds that we connect the things in this world, in life—the way we touch, the way we feel, the way we think and the way we deal.” His practice explores the boundaries of physical and social space through interactive, tactile, and biomorphic structures.

Really inspired by these multi sensory environments that force an active psychological or physical interaction with the viewer. Art moves from being allowed to be a passive experience to being forced to engage and experience the piece! The use of powermesh allows for these environments to be strong and supportive yet still soft and transparent. 

Organic growths of anxiety on the walls. 

Developing on the previous clay growths I though about creating a entire soft wall peice made up of these nodules. Thinking about anxiety as a organic form/growth, growing through cracks and all over the walls.

Alternative idea to the 3D wallpaper?

3D wallpaper without the design element, immersive walls that the viewer can lie back onto and be consumed by. 

Playing about with clay, creating little nodule monsters inspired by the shapes of Jen Kellner. These little peieces although simple seem to have some character about them. Little organic growths.

 Her silk sculptures are intriguing to me and her execution makes them come alive with movement. Waves of fabric.
